If your AirPods sound muffled on a Windows PC—especially when you join a call—check which playback device Windows is using. On some classic Bluetooth setups, activating the AirPods microphone can route audio through a hands-free connection that reduces music playback quality. It is a troubleshooting possibility, not a universal AirPods fault or a setting that is active on every PC.
Why AirPods audio can change when you join a call
Bluetooth audio can use different paths for listening and for calls. On some classic Bluetooth configurations, the hands-free path used when a headset microphone is active may make music sound worse than it does through the stereo playback path. A call or voice-chat app opening can therefore coincide with a noticeable change in playback.

The behavior depends on the PC, Bluetooth hardware and drivers, Windows version, and earbuds. Microsoft also identifies other possible causes of Bluetooth sound problems, including the selected output device, audio format, pairing, and drivers. There is no established figure for how many AirPods users experience this or how large the quality change is.

- Open Sound settings. In Windows, go to Settings > System > Sound and check the selected output device. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance is to make sure the intended Bluetooth device is selected: Fix Bluetooth connected but no sound issues in Windows.
- Check the playback devices. The AirPods-specific instructions reported by BGR and syndicated by Yahoo Tech describe opening More sound settings, selecting AirPods Stereo on the Playback tab, and setting it as the default device: Yahoo Tech’s AirPods and Windows instructions. The exact labels may differ between Windows versions and device setups.
- Listen again. Play audio before opening a call or voice-chat app, then compare it with playback while the app is using the AirPods microphone. If choosing the stereo endpoint fixes the issue, you may not need to change the microphone settings.
If the microphone triggers the drop in quality
If playback changes specifically when the AirPods microphone becomes active, the hands-free endpoint may be involved. The AirPods-specific instructions describe disabling AirPods Hands-Free AG Audio under recording devices if selecting the stereo playback endpoint does not help. This is a fallback, not a required setting for every Windows PC.

Disabling that recording endpoint can make the AirPods microphone unavailable to calls and voice chat on the PC. If you need a microphone, use the computer’s built-in mic, a separate microphone, or a wired headset instead, depending on your setup. The AirPods may still work for playback, but this change trades their microphone availability for avoiding that hands-free route.
Check whether your PC supports stereo while the mic is active
Windows 11 has a newer Bluetooth LE Audio capability that can preserve stereo playback while the microphone is in use, but only on compatible systems. Microsoft specifies Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, appropriate factory-integrated Bluetooth LE support, manufacturer drivers, and LE Audio-capable earbuds as requirements. On systems without the needed support, Microsoft says audio may be mono while the microphone is active.

Microsoft’s setting for choosing audio format while the microphone is active appears only when the PC supports the feature. Its guidance says Windows defaults to stereo when both the Windows 11 PC and Bluetooth audio device support stereo playback during microphone use. These requirements mean the feature should not be assumed to work with every AirPods and Windows combination. - Confirm the intended AirPods output is selected in Sound settings.
- Check which output formats Windows offers and whether changing the available format helps.
- Remove and pair the Bluetooth device again, or toggle Bluetooth off and back on.
- Check for an updated Bluetooth driver from the PC manufacturer.
