For an officially English-language entry on a modern platform, start with Sakura Wars (2019) on PS4. SEGA presented it as an all-new story for newcomers as well as returning fans, so you do not need to play every older game first. Choose Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love instead if you specifically want the earlier strategy-RPG style and can access a PS2 or Wii copy.
Why the 2019 game is the easiest place to begin
The series spans multiple decades, but its history is not a prerequisite list. SEGA’s official Sakura Wars portal tracks the numbered games from the 1990s through Sakura Wars V (2005) and the 2019 title. For the latter, SEGA of America described the story as new for both first-time players and longtime fans, and later called the game a soft reboot. That is a practical invitation to start fresh, not a promise that the older continuity has no connection to it.

The English-language release is titled simply Sakura Wars; in Japan it is known as Shin Sakura Taisen. SEGA’s official product page and Sakura Wars website introduce its setting and characters. SEGA of America’s February 13, 2020 PlayStation Blog post quotes communications specialist Zachary Reese calling it “an all-new narrative designed to be enjoyed by both parties.”

What playing the 2019 game is like
Story and character relationships
Sections of adventure and conversation give you time to know the cast and shape your interactions. Character scenes use LIPS, a timed-response system in which you choose how to react. Those choices help build relationships, so the quieter conversations are part of the game’s progression rather than just a break between fights.
Action battles instead of tactical combat
Combat is a significant departure from the older games. Producer Tetsu Katano explained in the same PlayStation Blog post that earlier entries used tactical battles, while the 2019 game moved to action combat and incorporated 3D presentation. Expect direct, real-time fighting in mecha rather than planning turns on a tactical field. If tactical strategy is the main feature you want, the older English-language game may suit you better.

When to choose the older strategy-RPG
Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love is the alternative to consider if you want the earlier format. NIS America announced its English-language release for PS2 and Wii in 2010, describing it as a strategy RPG with character-driven story choices. Its platform and style make it a reasonable starting point for a reader drawn to tactical battles and the older era.

That announcement confirms the original release, not present-day stock or ease of access. You will need the relevant legacy hardware and a copy you can obtain in your region; the available sources do not establish current retail availability, regional compatibility, or the status of fan translations. The 2019 PS4 game is the more straightforward choice if you want a documented modern-platform release.

For the PS4 game, the US PlayStation Store listing is a digital option; editions, add-ons, and prices can change. SEGA’s March 11, 2020 launch coverage documents the physical Launch Edition, but does not establish what a retailer currently has in stock. Check your region’s store or retailer before buying, especially for older hardware releases.

No. Related anime and other Sakura Wars media exist, but the game recommendation does not depend on watching them beforehand. Start with the game whose platform and combat style you prefer; the 2019 PS4 release is the simpler default, while So Long, My Love is the tactical-RPG branch.
