Banking apps may block screenshots to reduce the chance that account details, balances, or transaction information are captured and exposed. On Android, an app can use FLAG_SECURE to keep a screen out of screenshots and non-secure displays. If you need a record, use the bank’s receipt, statement, download, or sharing options where available—or ask the bank for an accessible copy. Avoid tools or modifications intended to bypass the restriction.
Why a banking app may block screenshots
Screenshots can create another copy of sensitive information that may be shared, stored in an unintended place, or exposed to someone with access to the device. A bank may therefore protect some or all of its screens from capture. The exact behavior depends on the bank’s app and the screen being viewed; one bank’s policy is not proof that every bank behaves the same way.

On Android, the documented mechanism is the FLAG_SECURE window flag. Android describes it as telling the system not to allow screenshots or display the window on a non-secure screen, such as a cast display. Because the flag also restricts display on non-secure screens, an app may block casting or screen sharing as well as a deliberate screenshot. Screen-recording software or a background preview may also be relevant to an app’s protections. OWASP’s mobile-app guidance discusses protecting sensitive content from screenshots, recordings, task-switcher thumbnails, and remote screen sharing: MASTG-BEST-0014.

For a bank-specific example, Bank of India’s BOI Mobile Omni Neo Bank App page says, “The App does not allow taking screenshot for security purpose,” and instructs users to close screen-recording or screen-sharing apps before using that app. These are the published instructions for that app, not a universal banking-app rule: BOI Mobile Omni Neo Bank App.
Screenshot blocking is different from screenshot detection
Blocking prevents or limits capture; detection notifies an app that a screenshot occurred in supported circumstances. Android 14 introduced a screenshot-detection API. Its callback does not provide the app with the screenshot image, and it is not the same control as FLAG_SECURE. Android explains the distinction in its screenshot-detection documentation.

What to do if you need a transaction record
- Open the transaction details. Look for a receipt, confirmation, download, or share option in the transaction itself. The available controls depend on the bank and app.
- For a longer history, check statements. Look for a statement export in the app, or sign in to the bank’s website if the app does not provide what you need. A website may not offer the same features, so check the bank’s own options.
- Ask the bank for an official or accessible copy. If there is no suitable in-app record, contact the bank and explain what information you need and how you need to provide it. For legitimate sharing, ask whether it recommends a redacted copy.
- Close recording or sharing software if prompted. If the app reports that screen recording or sharing must stop, close that software and retry. Bank of India gives this instruction for its app; other banks’ prompts and requirements may differ.
Why bypassing the restriction is a poor workaround
Third-party capture tools, modified apps, and root-based methods are not safe alternatives to a bank-provided record. They are intended to defeat a protection designed for sensitive financial screens and may expose data or interfere with the app’s security controls. Google Play policy requires apps to respect another app’s FLAG_SECURE declaration and prohibits facilitating workarounds. Its accessibility-tool exception does not allow protected content to be transmitted, saved, or cached for access outside the device: Google Play Developer Program Policy.

FLAG_SECURE is a defensive measure, not a promise that every attack or capture path is impossible. Android says the flag does not reliably prevent overlay attacks. Its documentation also says that on Android 11 (API 30) and lower, the flag helps reliably on about 70% of devices; Android attributes the limitation to cases where keyboard taps can be recorded on certain devices. That figure applies to the older Android versions and qualification stated in the documentation, not to all current Android devices: Android’s secure-activity guidance.

The documented mechanism and version details here concern Android. The sources cited do not establish a comparable technical rule for iOS or a bank-wide policy, so behavior on other platforms should be checked with the relevant bank.
