For combat, first learn your chosen weapon and the base game’s Focus Mode; then treat the expansion’s limited-duration Boost Action as an additional way to keep attacking, not a replacement for positioning and timing. Ascendance is in development for release in 2027, and its mechanics below come from a hands-on preview rather than a complete or final manual.
What’s new in Ascendance—and what carries over
PlayStation.Blog Japan’s September 16, 2026 hands-on report describes Ascendance as an expansion in development for 2027, with a new storyline, areas, monsters, actions, and Master Rank. Its aerial traversal and Boost Action are previewed features; the report does not establish that every detail is final or provide a complete control guide.

Keep the distinction clear: Seikret riding, Focus Mode, Focus Strike, and the 14 weapon types belong to the base game’s established systems. Ascendance adds the previewed Skybound Eyrie updraft-and-glide traversal and Boost Action. Do not assume older games’ “Aerial Style” rules apply here.
Learn one weapon before adding new mechanics
At Base Camp, use the Training Area and the in-game Play Guide’s Weapon Controls section to practice your chosen weapon’s moves and combos. The official Monster Hunter Wilds game page describes weapon types with different mobility, defense, and attack trade-offs; there is no universally best choice for every beginner.

- Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
- A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
- New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
- Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
- Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
- Great Sword favors powerful attacks, but is slower.
- Sword & Shield is maneuverable and permits some item use while drawn.
- Lance emphasizes defense and guarding.
- Insect Glaive is acrobatic.
Choose for controls and rhythm you can use reliably. Once basic attacks and recovery feel familiar, Focus Mode and the Seikret make more sense; Boost Action can come after those foundations.
Use Focus Mode to line up deliberate attacks
Focus Mode helps direct attacks and guards toward the camera-facing direction and highlights wounds and exposed weak points. Face the part you intend to target, check that the target is visible, and use a Focus Strike when your distance and alignment are safe. A highlighted wound is an opportunity, not an instruction to attack through a dangerous opening. Focus Mode is an aiming and targeting tool, not an always-on damage multiplier.
Developer tips published by Xbox Wire specifically caution that lining up a Focus Strike and getting enough distance matter. If the monster is closing or your angle is poor, reposition or keep up ordinary pressure rather than forcing the strike.

Ride the Seikret for movement and recovery
The Seikret is useful for covering ground and creating space, and official beginner guidance recommends using the ride to sharpen or restore health and stamina while moving at a safe distance. You can also gather while traveling and carry a second weapon, then switch when the monster or situation calls for different properties.

- Mounted: prioritize repositioning, recovery, and travel.
- Dismounted: use your weapon for sustained offense. Xbox Wire’s developer tips say mounted actions are limited and hunters generally need to dismount to deal substantial damage.
- Second weapon: consider one that suits a different situation, then switch as the monster’s behavior or your opening changes.
Mounted attacks exist, but the Seikret is not a substitute for your ordinary weapon moves. Use the ride to arrive at a better position, then dismount when you have a safe opportunity to attack.
Glide across the Skybound Eyrie in the preview
In the previewed Skybound Eyrie, riding the Seikret lets the hunter catch updrafts, rise, and glide between floating landmasses. This is the supported aerial-traversal description for that area. The report does not give button-by-button controls or establish airborne damage bonuses, traversal timing, or a universal aerial-combo strategy, so do not plan around those assumptions.

Manage Boost Action as a limited offensive window
The Ascendance preview describes Boost Action as a limited-duration state activated with the Boost Bracer. It grants weapon-specific attacks and empowers certain weapon actions. The gauge fills over time and when strikes land. The report says activation can happen mid-combo or after an attack leaves the hunter exposed, offering a way to continue offense through that moment.

When learning it, focus first on understanding what your weapon’s Boost actions do and on avoiding unsafe attacks. The preview also reports that destroying a wound with Focus Strike while boosted recharges the draining gauge. Timing a wound break near the end of Boost could help sustain momentum, but that is an advanced preview-derived tactic—not a required beginner combo.

Read openings in the preview’s encounter examples
Araketa: watch the wings and throat
In the reported Skybound Eyrie demo, Araketa attacked alongside its pack. Its wings swelled before a blast or charge, giving the hunter a tell to react to. Its throat weak spot became exposed when it roared; the preview writer used a Focus Strike there to interrupt Araketa’s commands to the pack. The writer also threw a curled-up Gundoraja creature to stagger it. These are specific examples from the demo, not verified instructions for every quest or difficulty.
Teostra: a counter and difficult terrain
In the Oilwell Basin demo, the preview writer countered Teostra’s foreleg slam with Switch Axe Offset Rising Slash. Thick oil mud also interfered with dodging away from blast attacks in that encounter. Treat this as an example of matching a counter to a tell and accounting for terrain—not as a beginner requirement or a guarantee that the same tactic is appropriate in every fight.
Quick Recap
Choose between offense, targeting, and repositioning
| Situation | Useful approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You are learning a weapon | Practice its controls and combos at Base Camp | Weapon mobility, defense, and attack patterns differ. |
| A wound or weak point is visible and safely aligned | Use Focus Strike | Focus Mode highlights targets, but distance and alignment matter. |
| The monster is threatening you or the angle is poor | Reposition, evade, or continue ordinary pressure when safe | A Focus Strike is not worth forcing through an unsafe opening. |
| You need to recover or change position | Ride the Seikret | It supports travel and recovery; dismount for sustained offense. |
| You are in the previewed Skybound Eyrie | Use Seikret updrafts and glides to cross floating landmasses | This is the aerial traversal described for that area in the preview. |
| You understand your weapon’s normal flow and Boost action | Activate Boost Action and build gauge through time and landed strikes | Wound-breaking Focus Strikes while boosted recharge the gauge in the preview. |
