The Sony WH-1000XM6 is a strong all-round candidate; the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) stands out if noise cancellation is your priority; and the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless pairs sound-personalization features with a long advertised battery life. None is a universal winner, so match the choice to how and where you listen.
Which premium wireless headphones should you shortlist?
| Model | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | Mixed use and an all-round feature set | What Hi-Fi? recommends it as a leading all-round over-ear Bluetooth option, highlighting sound, ANC, comfort and spatial processing. The publication also notes that it lacks aptX HD and USB-C audio. What Hi-Fi? |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | Listeners who put noise cancellation first | Tom’s Guide names it its leading noise-cancelling pick in its 2026 guide. Its other headphone guide raises reservations about sound and build quality, so weigh those priorities alongside ANC. Tom’s Guide: noise-cancelling headphones; Tom’s Guide: headphones |
| Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless | Listeners who want sound-personalization options and long advertised endurance | Sennheiser lists EQ, presets and sound personalization, and advertises up to 60 hours of playback. That maximum is a manufacturer claim, not a guaranteed result in every configuration. Sennheiser |
What does “immersive” mean for headphones?
Noise cancellation and spatial processing solve different problems. ANC uses microphones and signal processing to reduce outside noise; passive isolation comes from the fit of the earcups. Spatial features alter how audio is presented, and a wider-feeling presentation is not automatically more faithful to the recording.

- Quiet home listening: sound character, EQ options, comfort over long sessions and wired compatibility may matter more than maximum cancellation.
- Mixed use: look for a balance of sound, ANC, portability, calls and device compatibility rather than choosing on one headline feature.
How the three finalists differ
Sony WH-1000XM6: the balanced all-rounder
What Hi-Fi? presents the WH-1000XM6 as a leading all-round wireless over-ear option, citing its sound, ANC, comfort and spatial processing. Sony says its QN3 noise-cancelling processor is seven times faster than the QN1 used in the WH-1000XM5, and that an adaptive system optimizes 12 microphones in real time. Those speed and microphone descriptions are Sony’s product claims, not independent test results. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 product page

- PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
- MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
- LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
- ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.
What Hi-Fi? also describes support for LC3, LE Audio and Auracast, along with 360 Reality Audio Upmix for Cinema, which can apply spatial processing to stereo content. Its cited guide notes that aptX HD and USB-C audio are absent. TechRadar lists the headphones at 254 g and 30 hours of battery life with ANC on; those are specifications reported in its guide, not a like-for-like independent endurance comparison. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): ANC first
Tom’s Guide selects the second-generation Bose QuietComfort Ultra as its leading noise-cancelling headphone in its 2026 roundup. That makes it a compelling option to investigate if reducing surrounding noise is your main goal, but it does not establish that it has the best sound for every listener.

- Custom acoustic architecture and updated drivers for powerful Beats sound.
- Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking.
- Ultralight ergonomic design for all-day comfort. Flex-grip headband and ergonomically angled, adjustable ear cups for a stable fit.
- UltraPlush ear cushions are designed for comfort and durability.
- Up to 50 hours of battery life.
Immersive Audio is also a preference rather than a guaranteed upgrade. In Tom’s Guide’s review, the reviewer preferred to leave Bose Immersive Audio off because it made the sound too thin for their taste. Treat that as one reviewer’s judgment: try the mode with your own music before deciding whether you like its effect.

Sennheiser lists a 42 mm transducer system, adaptive ANC, transparency mode, EQ, presets and sound personalization. Its US product page advertises up to 60 hours of playback and says a 10-minute charge adds six hours. Both figures are manufacturer claims; actual battery life depends on listening level, features and other settings.

Judge sound by listening, not a frequency-range headline
A frequency-response range’s endpoints do not tell you how a headphone sounds across that range. Tom’s Guide explains why those numbers alone cannot rank sound quality. Use credible listening reviews to narrow your options, then audition the finalists with familiar tracks if you can. EQ and sound-personalization tools can change the presentation, but their usefulness depends on whether you like the result.

Try the fit for the way you will wear them
Comfort is personal. Head shape, clamp force, heat, glasses and session length can all change the experience. If possible, try the headphones on; otherwise, check the retailer’s return terms before buying so you can assess the fit at home.
Check codecs, wired use and your devices
Do not assume premium Bluetooth headphones support every codec or provide lossless Bluetooth audio. Check the specific model’s supported codecs against your phone or computer; playback quality and codec selection can vary by platform and device. For the WH-1000XM6, What Hi-Fi? specifically notes the lack of aptX HD and USB-C audio. If wired listening matters, verify which connection and cable your setup requires rather than assuming the charging port also carries audio.
Compare battery life on equivalent terms
Maximum manufacturer battery figures are not directly comparable unless the listening conditions and settings match. ANC, volume, wireless features and usage affect endurance. If you use ANC throughout a commute or flight, look for an ANC-on figure where available and treat it as a specification or claim—not a promise for your exact use.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose your main environment: travel and commuting favor ANC; quiet listening can put sound preference and comfort first; mixed use calls for balance.
- Decide what “immersive” means to you: reduced ambient noise, a spatial mode, or a wide-feeling stereo presentation.
- Compare the trade-offs: consider EQ, spatial modes, comfort, portability, controls, call features, case and wired options alongside sound and ANC.
- Check your devices: confirm codec support and connection options for the phone or computer you actually use.
- Try before committing where possible: fit and sound preference are personal, and review rankings cannot settle either for every listener.
