As of October 7, 2026, official vendor documentation supports a useful comparison of five: AWS Bedrock AgentCore Runtime, Google Gemini Enterprise Agent Runtime, Microsoft Foundry Agent Service, Cloudflare Agents, and Anthropic Claude Managed Agents. The right fit depends less on a universal ranking than on who operates the agent loop, how long work can run, and what control you need over identity, state, tools, and deployment.
What counts as a managed agent runtime?
A managed runtime does more than provide access to a model. Depending on the service, it may host agent execution, manage sessions or state, provide tool integrations, and handle parts of deployment and operations. An agent framework or SDK helps developers define an agent; a model API supplies inference. Those roles can overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Microsoft’s provider documentation points users who need remote or managed execution—where a service owns an agent definition, permissions, or execution—to Agent Service. That distinction is useful across vendors: check what the product actually hosts rather than assuming that an SDK or model endpoint is also a managed runtime.

How the five documented runtimes differ
| Service | Documented runtime scope | Framework or model details |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Bedrock AgentCore Runtime | Managed agent or tool execution, with a serverless microVM option and an Instances option running on AWS-managed EC2 infrastructure in the customer’s account. | AWS says it supports multiple frameworks and models inside or outside Bedrock. Its FAQ lists asynchronous work up to 8 hours on microVMs and 14 days on Instances; these are stated service limits, not benchmarks. |
| Microsoft Foundry Agent Service | Prompt-agent and hosted-agent paths, managed endpoints, automatic scaling, dedicated Entra identity, session-level state persistence, and end-to-end observability. | Hosted agents can use Agent Framework, LangGraph, OpenAI Agents SDK, Anthropic Agent SDK, GitHub Copilot SDK, or custom code. Microsoft describes container-image and source-ZIP deployment. |
| Google Gemini Enterprise Agent Runtime | Managed runtime within Google’s broader Agent Platform, with managed deployment templates and paths for supported frameworks. | Google documentation describes LangGraph, LangChain, AG2, and LlamaIndex paths. The API resource retains the name ReasoningEngine for backward compatibility. |
| Cloudflare Agents | Cloudflare describes the runtime as handling agent state, communication, execution, and operations. | Cloudflare documents connections to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and services with an OpenAI-compatible API, and points to AI Gateway for routing and related controls. |
| Anthropic Claude Managed Agents | Anthropic describes a composable API suite for building and deploying agents, with infrastructure and memory. | The April 8, 2026 announcement describes native MCP and tool integrations and labels the service public beta. Check Anthropic’s current terms and availability before choosing it. |
These descriptions come from the vendors’ own documentation and announcements: Amazon Web Services’ AgentCore FAQ, Microsoft Learn, Google Cloud documentation, Cloudflare Agents documentation, and Anthropic’s April 8, 2026 announcement. Vendor descriptions establish what each provider says its service offers; they do not establish equivalent implementation, performance, or service maturity across providers.

Choose by workload and operating boundary
Start with execution duration
If an agent must keep working after an initial request, check maximum execution duration and background-work behavior before evaluating framework compatibility. AWS publishes two different asynchronous-work limits by compute option: up to 8 hours on microVMs and up to 14 days on Instances. These are AWS-documented maximums, not comparative performance measurements. For the other services, confirm the limits for the exact workload and deployment path you intend to use.
Match the runtime to your deployment model
Decide whether you want to upload source, deploy a container, use a managed template, or run on infrastructure associated with your own cloud account. Microsoft documents source-ZIP and container-image paths for hosted agents; AWS distinguishes serverless microVMs from Instances running on AWS-managed EC2 infrastructure in the customer’s account. Google documents managed templates and framework paths. These descriptions are not proof that the services offer equivalent deployment controls.

Check framework and model compatibility feature by feature
A list of supported frameworks or model connections is a starting point, not a guarantee of portability. Confirm that the particular framework, model, tools, streaming behavior, and deployment path you need are supported together. AWS says AgentCore works with frameworks and models inside or outside Bedrock; Cloudflare documents connections to several model providers and OpenAI-compatible services. Microsoft and Google list framework paths for their respective platforms. None of those statements, by itself, establishes that agent state, tools, or operational configuration can move unchanged between providers.

Identify which service owns conversation or session state, how long it persists, and who can access it. Then examine how the runtime supplies identity to tools, handles credentials, and constrains network access. Microsoft documents dedicated Entra identity and session-level state persistence. Cloudflare describes state as part of its runtime scope, while Anthropic’s announcement includes memory and tool integrations. The cited material does not establish equivalent retention, private-networking, or credential-governance behavior across all five, so verify those controls in the exact service documentation for your deployment.

Decide what operations you want managed
Some teams want a service to handle endpoints, scaling, tracing, and lifecycle work; others need more direct control over the agent loop and surrounding infrastructure. Microsoft documents managed endpoints, automatic scaling, and end-to-end observability. AWS offers two compute options, and Cloudflare describes operational functions as part of its runtime. Treat each as a vendor-stated capability and validate the specific logging, metrics, tracing, deployment-versioning, and incident-response controls your production system requires.
A practical evaluation sequence
- Define the agent’s job. Record whether it answers interactively, runs asynchronous work, calls external tools, or must retain state between sessions.
- Write down hard limits. Specify required execution duration, concurrency, session isolation, model and framework, network boundary, and identity model.
- Eliminate mismatched deployment paths. Compare source or container deployment, managed templates, and account-level infrastructure only where the provider documents the path you need.
- Test one representative agent. Use the same tools and workload shape on each candidate. Measure your own latency, reliability, and operating effort; the available vendor material does not provide an independent cross-runtime benchmark.
- Plan for exit. Determine whether agent code, state, tool definitions, credentials, and observability data can be exported or recreated if you change runtimes.
- Verify current service terms. Confirm region, preview or general-availability status, limits, and pricing for the exact features under consideration. Google’s documentation places Agent Runtime within a broader platform, and Anthropic’s cited announcement described public beta on April 8, 2026; service terms can change.
Why this is not an eight-way ranking
The title’s eight-product count cannot be substantiated from the official documentation identified for this comparison. The five named services have enough documented runtime detail to outline meaningful differences, but adding frameworks or model APIs to reach eight would confuse tools for building agents with services that host and operate them. Nor is there an independent cross-vendor benchmark here that supports a fastest, cheapest, or most reliable verdict.
