Put an indoor motion sensor where people naturally walk through its detection area, such as a frequently used route near a door. Keep windows, direct sunlight, radiators, fans, and other obstructions or moving objects out of the monitored area. Use the mounting height and pet settings specified for your exact model; they are not universal.
Choose a route people actually use
A sensor is most useful when someone crossing the room is likely to pass through its detection area. Bosch’s quick-start guide recommends placing its detector in the part of the room walked through most often, for example near a door. That is guidance for that device, not a guarantee that one position covers every approach. Check your sensor’s detection pattern and make sure furniture or other objects do not block it. How high should you mount it?
There is no single height established for every motion sensor. Follow the manual for the model you own, since manufacturer recommendations can differ substantially.

Keep common false-alarm triggers out of the detection area
For the Motion Detector II [+M], Bosch advises against placing the unit directly opposite a window, in direct sunlight, near a heat source such as a radiator, near a moving object such as a fan, or on an unstable surface. The manual also says to keep it somewhere pets cannot access. Bosch’s support guidance for its other detector likewise warns against monitoring windows, fans, and radiators. What if you have pets?
Pet handling depends on the model and its settings. Bosch says the preset pet-detection mode for its supported detector does not detect pets up to 25 kg, and that enabling it disables crawl-under protection. This limit and behavior apply to that product’s stated mode; they are not category-wide standards. The Motion Detector II [+M] manual separately says to position that detector where pets cannot access it, so do not assume a pet setting overrides all placement instructions. How to respond to recurring false alarms
Start with the alarm system’s manual and look for anything moving or changing temperature within the monitored area, including movement caused by ventilation. A USFA-hosted report reproduces Appleton Police Department advice that pets can be a poor fit for some systems and recommends understanding the manual and working with the alarm business. Indoor alarm sensors and outdoor motion lights are different
An indoor alarm detector monitors movement within its detection area. For exterior security, USFA separately recommends motion-activated lighting near entrances. A light is not a substitute for an indoor alarm sensor, and the placement guidance for one should not be assumed to apply to the other. USFA home fire safety guidance
Choosing a sensor or getting professional help
When comparing indoor PIR motion sensors, check each model’s mounting-height range, detection pattern, mounting options, pet settings and limits, and placement exclusions. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish independent head-to-head performance, so do not treat one model’s stated coverage or pet limit as a category standard.
