There is no universally best object storage for private image thumbnails and signed links in Node.js. If your application already runs on AWS, private Amazon S3 objects with short-lived presigned GET URLs are a direct fit. For a Google Cloud application, Cloud Storage provides a documented Node.js V4 signed-read workflow. Choose CloudFront in front of S3 when CDN delivery and controls that prevent direct access to the S3 origin are important. These are architecture fits based on provider documentation, not a measured comparison of price or performance.
What to choose for private thumbnails
Start with the cloud platform and delivery requirements you already have. A direct object-store link is the simpler route; a CDN can add distribution and access-policy behavior.

| Approach | Useful fit | Checks and constraints |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon S3 presigned GET | Time-limited access to private S3 objects. AWS says presigned URLs can grant access without changing the bucket policy. | The URL can be reused until it expires. Temporary credentials can make it expire sooner; ensure the signing principal can read the object and choose an appropriate lifetime. AWS presigned URL documentation |
| CloudFront signed URL over S3 | Private content delivered through a CDN, with signed access policies and optional restrictions such as IP ranges. | Configure trusted key groups and signing keys. To prevent clients bypassing CloudFront with S3 URLs, configure origin access control and remove other S3 read permissions. CloudFront signed URL documentation and CloudFront access to S3 origins |
| Google Cloud Storage V4 signed URL | Google Cloud workloads that need temporary access and a documented Node.js client-library pattern. | Signed URLs use XML API endpoints. Plan for signer authorization and the credentials or signBlob setup. Google Cloud signed URLs and Cloud Storage IAM roles |
The reviewed documentation does not establish comparable workload-specific prices, latency, throughput, or thumbnail transformation features. Thumbnail generation, storage, and regeneration are separate image-processing decisions.

- Authenticate the request. Identify the application user making the request.
- Authorize access. Check that user’s entitlement to the image before creating any URL.
- Identify the private thumbnail object. Sign the key for the derived thumbnail, rather than granting access to a broader bucket or unrelated source image.
- Create a temporary GET URL on the server. Return it only to the authorized client that needs to display or fetch the thumbnail.
Object storage does not decide whether your application user is entitled to see an image. In S3, the URL uses the permissions of the IAM principal whose credentials signed it; that principal’s access is distinct from the user’s application-level authorization. Anyone who obtains the URL can use it for its allowed action while it remains valid. Google Cloud states the same bearer-credential risk: “Anyone in possession of the signed URL can use it while it’s active, regardless of whether they have a valid account.” Google Cloud signed URL documentation

Keep the signing authority and URLs protected
Generate links in trusted server-side code. The signer needs permission for the requested object operation, but signing credentials must not be exposed to browser code. Because a signed URL is a bearer credential, avoid putting it in logs or other places where unintended parties can retrieve it while it is valid.
Use the shortest lifetime that still works for the user experience. AWS notes that a URL’s effective lifetime can be shorter than its configured expiration when the credentials used to create it expire or are revoked. Google Cloud’s V4 examples allow an expiration timestamp and include a 15-minute sample; that is an example, not a universal recommended lifetime. Generate a Google Cloud V4 read URL in Node.js
The official Google Cloud client-library example uses @google-cloud/storage, Application Default Credentials, a read action, and an expiration timestamp. It demonstrates URL signing, not the application’s authorization check or a thumbnail-processing pipeline. Configure credentials that can sign URLs before using the example. When CloudFront changes the design
CloudFront is relevant when you want a CDN in the delivery path and need signed policies beyond a direct S3 presigned URL. For private S3 content, configure CloudFront origin access control and remove other S3 read access if clients must not be able to bypass the distribution. CloudFront validates signed URLs on requests: a download that has already started may complete after expiry, but a later range request made after expiry fails. CloudFront signed URL behavior
