It is also commonly called a code formatter or pretty-printer. It is meant to preserve what the program does; it does not, by formatting alone, correct logic or prove that code is sound.
What a source code beautifier does
A beautifier takes source text, applies formatting rules, and produces a consistently laid-out version. Depending on the language and tool, those rules can govern indentation, spaces around symbols, and where long lines wrap. Some formatters parse code and print it again according to the selected rules; Prettier describes this approach in its documentation.

The word “beautifier” describes the visible result: source that is easier to scan because its layout is regular. Current tool documentation more often calls this operation formatting.

Formatting changes how code is presented, not its intended behavior. The Prettier project states that its output should preserve behavior and remain valid code in its rationale. That is a formatter’s correctness goal, not a guarantee that the original program was correct.
- Usually changed: indentation, whitespace, spacing, and line wrapping.
- Not fixed by formatting: incorrect logic, bugs, security weaknesses, or design problems.
A formatted file can still contain errors. A beautifier is not a substitute for a linter, debugger, security scanner, or refactoring tool.
How formatters differ
Formatters are language-aware, so the right choice depends first on the kinds of files in a project. They also differ in how much control they offer over style and where they can be run.

| Formatter | Documented language scope | Style and workflow details |
|---|---|---|
| Prettier | JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, JSON, Markdown, YAML, and other formats | Documents an API and a check operation for automated workflows; see its documentation and CLI reference. |
| clang-format | C and C++, plus several additional languages | Supports built-in or custom styles and project configuration in .clang-format or _clang-format; it can be used from the command line or an editor. See the clang-format documentation. |
| Black | Python | Describes its formatting output as deterministic. See the Black documentation. |
These are examples, not interchangeable tools: check that a formatter supports the project’s languages and file types. Formatter capabilities and integrations can change, so consult the tool’s current documentation when choosing one.
Where formatting fits into a workflow
A formatter may be run manually from a command line, invoked from an editor, or incorporated into a project’s automated checks. The available scope—such as a whole file, selected text, or changed lines—depends on the formatter and the editor integration. For example, Qt Creator documents a Beautifier plugin that invokes external tools including Artistic Style, ClangFormat, and Uncrustify in its Beautifier plugin guide.
Rank #3
Before adopting a formatter, consider whether it fits the project’s existing conventions, whether it provides the needed style controls, and whether the team can use it consistently in its editor or automated workflow. A stable, shared format can make layout more predictable, but it is not evidence that the code is logically correct.
