AI-powered laptops can protect onboard data well, but the “AI-powered” label is not a security guarantee. For Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft documents local processing for some built-in AI tasks and specific protections for Recall snapshots. Those safeguards work alongside familiar controls such as drive encryption, TPM-backed keys, Secure Boot, updates, and account authentication; none makes a laptop immune to malware, account takeover, physical access, or unsafe apps and services.
What “on-device AI” does—and does not—mean for privacy
Local processing is a property of a particular feature, not a promise about every action on the laptop. Microsoft says supported built-in Windows AI components can run on the device’s NPU, and describes Phi Silica as handling language tasks locally. That can reduce the need to send the task’s working data to a cloud service. It does not establish that every AI feature, third-party application, or connected service works the same way. “Local” also does not mean the computer never communicates externally. Microsoft says Recall does not require a cloud connection to save and analyze snapshots, and that snapshots are not sent to Microsoft. Its documentation notes that diagnostic data may be sent depending on privacy settings, and Recall may retrieve website artifacts such as favicons or metadata. What Recall stores and how it is protected
Recall is an optional Windows feature that can save screen snapshots so users can search past activity. Microsoft’s support material describes it as a preview feature, so its availability and behavior may change; do not assume it is present or configured identically on every AI laptop. Microsoft says snapshots and associated vector data are stored locally and encrypted. Access uses just-in-time decryption protected by Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS); encryption keys are protected through the TPM and a Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) Enclave. Microsoft’s administration documentation states: “Snapshots aren’t sent to Microsoft.” These are specific vendor-documented protections, not an independent audit of every attack scenario.
Filtering and user controls
Recall’s sensitive-information filter is on by default and runs locally to avoid saving snapshots when potentially sensitive information is detected. That is a mitigation, not proof that sensitive content can never be captured. Users can pause capture, delete snapshots, and manage storage limits and retention duration in Recall’s settings. Review those controls before relying on the feature to record activity.

Recall requirements are not a security score
Microsoft’s 2026 documentation lists a Copilot+ PC meeting Secured-core requirements, a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, and enabled Device Encryption or BitLocker as Recall minimum requirements. How Windows’ hardware and boot protections help
TPM and security processors
A TPM 2.0 can support key generation and secure storage, encryption, boot-integrity measurements, and attestation. In Windows, it underpins protections such as Windows Hello, BitLocker, and System Guard. Microsoft says Pluton is integrated into the system-on-chip on platforms that include it; it can function as a TPM 2.0 or as a separate security processor. Integration shortens a potentially vulnerable communication path, but these mechanisms do not by themselves protect a compromised, already-unlocked session. Microsoft says all Copilot+ PCs are Secured-core PCs and include Pluton by default. However, the TPM arrangement varies with hardware generation: Microsoft says new 2026 AMD and Qualcomm silicon will use firmware or discrete TPM functionality rather than Pluton as the TPM, while Pluton remains as a security processor. Secure Boot, Core isolation, and encryption
Secure Boot helps prevent rootkits from loading before Windows starts. Core isolation runs core processes in a virtualized environment. These protections reduce particular boot-time and system-level risks; they do not prevent every form of malware or misuse. Microsoft says Windows 11 Device Encryption or BitLocker is enabled by default, but users should verify the state on their own device and understand how its recovery information is stored. Check the security state on a Windows 11 laptop
- Inspect hardware security: Open Windows Security → Device security. Check the displayed status for the security processor (TPM), Secure Boot, and Core isolation or memory integrity. A status page shows configuration, not proof that the device cannot be attacked.
- Verify drive encryption: Open Windows Settings and check the Device Encryption or BitLocker status for the device. Confirm that recovery information is available to you and stored safely; encryption can be difficult to recover from if the key is lost.
- Review sign-in protection: Use Windows Hello or another strong, unique sign-in method. For Recall, verify that the required Windows Hello options are configured before enabling capture.
- Review each AI feature’s data path: Confirm whether the named task runs locally or sends information to a service, and read that app’s retention and privacy terms. Do not infer a third-party app’s behavior from Windows’ built-in AI documentation.
- Keep components current: Install Windows, firmware, drivers, and AI-component updates as they become available. Microsoft says built-in Windows AI components are serviced through Windows Update.
- If you use Recall, check its controls: Review capture status, sensitive-information filtering, retention and storage limits, and deletion options in Recall settings.
Avoid clearing the TPM casually: Microsoft warns users to back up data before doing so. If managing a work laptop, ask the administrator which device controls, monitoring, and AI-feature policies apply. Microsoft says IT administrators cannot access or view Recall snapshots on end-user devices, but that statement is specific to Recall; organizational configurations and other software may differ.
What to compare when choosing an AI laptop
Compare the device’s documented configuration and the data path of the features you intend to use, rather than treating “AI PC” or processor TOPS as a security rating.

- Feature data flow: Which named tasks run locally, and which use a remote service?
- Drive protection: Is full-disk encryption enabled, and how do you retain and recover its key?
- Hardware and boot controls: Does the specific model support TPM or a security processor and Secure Boot, and are they enabled?
- Authentication: What sign-in options are supported, and how are they configured?
- Maintenance: What is the update path for Windows, firmware, drivers, and built-in AI components?
- Feature and management availability: Does the exact model meet the requirements for features you want, and what policies apply if it is managed by an organization?
Microsoft’s documentation is useful for understanding its own platform and features, but it is vendor documentation rather than an independent security comparison. It does not establish comparative breach rates or prove that one AI laptop ecosystem is safer than another. These Windows-specific details should not be generalized to Apple laptops, Chromebooks, or third-party AI software.
