Drive or fast-travel to the camp, park in the service area, choose Access Merchant, open the Upgrade tab, and select Inventory / Tool Slots. Three purchases increase one vehicle’s selectable tool capacity from one slot to the four-slot maximum for a total of 150 Pebbles.
How to reach the inventory upgrade menu
Crazy Günther’s mechanic camp is the only place used for the Tool Slots expansion. You do not need to search trails, points of interest, scenic locations, or recovery sites for a separate inventory item. The capacity increase is a vehicle upgrade handled through the mechanic’s merchant interface.

- Travel to Crazy Günther’s mechanic camp. You can drive there or use fast travel when that option is available to you.
- Park in the service area. The merchant interaction is tied to the vehicle being serviced, so make sure the vehicle you intend to upgrade is the one in the service area.
- Choose Access Merchant. This opens the camp’s purchase interface rather than a general map or inventory screen.
- Open the Upgrade tab. Do not look under a consumables or equipment-purchase category.
- Select Inventory / Tool Slots. The panel shows your current capacity, the next available stage, and its Pebble cost.
- Buy the displayed stage. Stages must be purchased in sequence; later stages remain locked until the previous one is installed.
If the category is missing or the purchase button is unavailable, first check that you are at the mechanic camp’s service area, that you opened the merchant rather than another interaction, and that the intended vehicle is currently parked there. Then check your Pebble balance and the upgrade order. The menu is the authoritative display for the next price on that vehicle.

Every Tool Slots stage, cost, and capacity
The complete progression starts with one selectable tool slot at no cost and adds one slot at each paid stage. The following values apply to a single vehicle.

Buying all three stages therefore costs 150 Pebbles for that vehicle. The game does not offer a fifth Tool Slots stage in this progression. Because the prices rise at each step, the first purchase is the cheapest way to gain an additional selectable tool, while the final purchase completes the four-slot capacity.
AllThingsHow’s guide, updated October 19, 2026, describes the same one-to-four progression and confirms that Tool Slots differ from driving-stat upgrades: they increase how many tools you can bring rather than changing handling or terrain performance.
What counts as a tool slot
Tool Slots control the number of selectable tools your vehicle can carry. The reusable winch is a special case: it is always in your inventory and does not consume one of those selectable slots. TechRadar’s October 14, 2026 coverage specifically notes that the winch can be used repeatedly and remains available in every inventory.

- Portable anchor or winch point
- Wooden planks
- Portable camp
- Repair kit
- Car jack
- Meteorite Radar
- Camp Tool
For example, a vehicle with two Tool Slots can select any two of those tools for a trip, while the reusable winch remains available separately. A four-slot vehicle can carry four selectable tools at once, letting you combine recovery equipment with expedition utilities instead of choosing only one category. The upgrade does not create extra copies of a tool; it expands the number of different selectable tools you can bring.

Why expanding capacity changes trip planning
A single slot forces a sharp choice. You may need a repair kit after damage, a car jack for a difficult immobilization, or a portable anchor when the vehicle needs a secure winch point. Taking one means leaving another option behind. The first expansion removes that most restrictive either-or decision.
At three slots, you can normally build a loadout around a primary purpose and still retain a contingency tool. A recovery-oriented setup might pair a portable anchor with a car jack and add wooden planks for terrain assistance. An exploration setup could combine a portable camp, Meteorite Radar, and Camp Tool. These are planning examples rather than fixed recipes: the correct combination depends on the route, the vehicle, and what you expect to encounter.

You can carry several recovery options while reserving space for a camp or discovery-oriented equipment. Since the winch is always present, the fourth paid stage gives you four additional selectable choices rather than three total tools. That distinction matters when counting a loadout before departure.
How to earn and budget the 150 Pebbles
Pebbles are the game’s upgrade currency. TechRadar identifies exploration and completed activities as the main ways players earn them, including recoveries, challenge trails, points of interest, and wildlife or scenic discoveries. The currency is therefore tied to moving through the world and completing optional objectives, not just to reaching the mechanic camp.
Use the following budgeting approach:
- Decide which vehicle will receive the upgrade first. Since Tool Slots are tracked per vehicle, spending on one vehicle does not improve another.
- Reserve the next stage’s displayed price. The Upgrade tab shows the immediate cost; do not assume a later stage can be bought directly.
- Compare capacity against other vehicle upgrades. Pebbles may also be needed for traction, suspension, water resistance, protection, or winch range. Their individual prices are not established here, so use the in-game Upgrade tab for those figures.
- Return after activities rather than making a special empty trip. Recoveries, challenge trails, points of interest, and discoveries can build the balance while also advancing exploration.
- Buy the next Tool Slots stage when its extra choice solves a recurring problem. If you repeatedly abandon a useful repair or recovery tool, the capacity purchase has a practical payoff; if you are struggling to reach areas at all, a mobility or protection upgrade may deserve priority.
Do not treat 150 Pebbles as a shared account-wide target. It is the total for completing the three stages on one vehicle. A second vehicle needs its own Tool Slots purchases, with its own cumulative cost.

When to buy each stage
Buy Stage 1 when one missing tool is causing turnarounds
The first paid stage costs 25 Pebbles and raises capacity from one to two. It is a strong early purchase if you regularly return to camp because a route requires both a recovery item and a utility item. It also helps when you cannot predict whether damage, a difficult obstacle, or a camp requirement will be the more immediate problem.
Buy Stage 2 when you need a primary tool, backup, and utility
The second stage raises capacity to three. It suits trips where you want one tool for the route’s main task, one contingency item, and one exploration or camp item. For example, a vehicle can be prepared with a portable anchor, repair kit, and portable camp without giving up every recovery option. The 50-Pebble price is worthwhile when the vehicle is already capable of reaching the destinations you are targeting.
Buy Stage 3 for long or tool-intensive expeditions
The final stage raises capacity to four and costs 75 Pebbles. It is most useful when you are away from the mechanic for extended periods, combining discovery objectives with recovery work, or changing tasks during one outing. Delay it if the vehicle still lacks the traction, suspension, water resistance, protection, or winch range needed to complete the route; four tools cannot compensate for a vehicle that cannot safely reach the objective.
Tool Slots are tied to the vehicle, not the player
Upgrades bought on one vehicle do not transfer to another. If you switch vehicles, the new vehicle uses its own Tool Slots progression and capacity. This is the most important reason to inspect the vehicle name or appearance in the service area before confirming a purchase.
Plan around roles rather than assuming every vehicle will share one universal inventory. You might fully expand a vehicle used for remote recoveries while leaving a short-trip vehicle at an earlier stage. That is a valid way to control Pebble spending, provided you remember that the expanded capacity follows the upgraded vehicle only.

The locked-state display also prevents accidental skipping: the Upgrade tab shows the next price, and later stages stay locked until earlier stages have been purchased. If you see a higher stage marked unavailable, that is expected progression behavior, not a missing map objective.

One slot: commit to the route’s single biggest risk
With the starting capacity, select only the tool most likely to prevent a failure. A recovery route may justify a portable anchor, while a route centered on repairs may justify a repair kit. The reusable winch is still available, so the choice is about the one additional selectable tool, not whether you have any winching capability at all.
Two slots: pair recovery with utility
Two slots let you cover two different failure modes. Portable anchor plus wooden planks emphasizes getting unstuck; repair kit plus portable camp favors self-sufficiency; Meteorite Radar plus Camp Tool favors discovery work. Select combinations that match the route rather than carrying two tools that solve the same unlikely problem.
Three slots: add a contingency
At three slots, keep a primary objective tool, a recovery or damage-control tool, and one flexible item. A car jack can complement a portable anchor, while a repair kit covers a different kind of setback. If exploration is the purpose, reserve one position for Meteorite Radar or Camp Tool and use the other two for keeping the vehicle operational.

The maximum capacity supports mixed expeditions. You can combine a portable anchor, repair kit, wooden planks, and portable camp, or replace one of those with Meteorite Radar or Camp Tool when discoveries are the priority. Because the winch is always present, all four positions remain available for these selectable tools.
Common mistakes and fixes
Searching the map for an inventory pickup
There is no separate Tool Slots collectible to locate. Go to Crazy Günther’s mechanic camp and use the merchant’s Upgrade tab.
Expecting the winch to use a slot
The reusable winch is always in the inventory. Count only the selectable tools when deciding whether you need another stage.
Trying to buy Stage 2 or Stage 3 first
Stages are sequential. Purchase the currently available stage; later stages unlock only after the earlier purchase is complete.
Upgrading the wrong vehicle
Tool Slots are per vehicle. Before paying, confirm that the vehicle in the service area is the one you plan to use for the expedition.
Arriving without enough Pebbles
The Upgrade tab displays the next price. Leave the camp, complete exploration activities, recoveries, challenge trails, points of interest, or wildlife and scenic discoveries, then return when the balance is sufficient.
Confusing inventory capacity with driving performance
Tool Slots do not improve traction, suspension, water resistance, protection, or winch range. If the problem is reaching an area rather than carrying the right equipment, compare those vehicle upgrades before spending all available Pebbles on capacity.
Current platform context
TechRadar lists Over the Hill on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2, with the PC release dated October 14, 2026. Menu wording can vary slightly by platform or later update, but the documented path remains the mechanic camp, Access Merchant, Upgrade, then Inventory / Tool Slots. If your labels differ, use the category that describes selectable tool capacity and verify the next price before confirming.
The shortest route to a fully expanded vehicle
For a complete upgrade on one vehicle, make three visits or one visit after earning enough currency: buy the 25-Pebble stage, then the 50-Pebble stage, then the 75-Pebble stage. The vehicle ends with four selectable tool slots, while its reusable winch remains permanently available. Upgrade another vehicle only when its own expedition role justifies paying for a separate progression.
