Start with Grants.gov and NIH’s funding search tools for U.S. federal opportunities, then use specialist directories such as HIVSource and funder pages such as amfAR to find additional leads. Treat directories as discovery tools: the sponsor’s current notice is the authority on eligibility, scope, deadlines, and how to apply.
Which funding sources should you search first?
Grants.gov and NIH
Grants.gov is the federal starting point for finding and applying for discretionary funding opportunities. NIH notices of funding opportunity are posted there; NIH also provides topic and mechanism filters and other NIH-specific search tools. Begin with a broad search on Grants.gov, then narrow within NIH by institute, funding mechanism, and research topic. NIH also publishes parent announcements for investigator-initiated applications. The right announcement depends on the project and applicant, so read its full notice rather than relying on search-result summaries. NIH funding search guidance explains the available search tools.

HIVSource
HIVSource’s funding directory, provided in collaboration with NIH’s Office of AIDS Research, gathers links to HIV-related funding from organizations including NIH’s Office of Extramural Research, CFAR programs, amfAR, ViiV Healthcare, and Unitaid. It is useful for finding leads outside a single federal search. Follow each listing to the sponsor’s own page and verify that the opportunity is current and appropriate for your work.
HIV.gov’s federal funding guide
HIV.gov’s guide to finding federal funding identifies Grants.gov as the primary source for federal funding opportunities. Federal support can take the form of grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements, and eligible applicants may include public agencies, Tribes, community organizations, academic medical centers, and educational organizations. The guide covers HIV programs broadly, not research grants alone; check the individual notice to confirm that it funds the research activity you propose.

What does amfAR offer HIV researchers?
amfAR solicits applications through formal requests for proposals for targeted research and says submissions are evaluated through internal and external scientific review. Its mechanisms differ in career stage, access, and purpose; consult the current call for definitive terms.
| Mechanism | Who it is for | Access and award information |
|---|---|---|
| Mathilde Krim Fellowships in Biomedical Research | Postdoctoral researchers | Check the current fellowship call for eligibility, scope, amount, and deadline. |
| Target Grants | Investigator-initiated research; applicants need a research or clinical doctoral degree and affiliation with an eligible nonprofit research institution. | Open-call applications are governed by the current request for proposals. amfAR describes awards of up to $480,000 over two years. |
| Horizon Grants | Collaborative research | Invitation-only; not an open application route. |
These descriptions and the award ceiling are from amfAR’s Types of Grants page. A published award maximum is not a guarantee that every project will receive that amount. The separate research grants page showed a 2026 Cancer Immunology Target Grant solicitation whose full-application deadline was August 24, 2026; applications were closed when the page was checked on October 7, 2026. That past deadline is not actionable. amfAR reports that it has awarded more than 3,900 grants to research teams worldwide, a cumulative organizational figure that does not indicate current availability or an applicant’s likelihood of success.

Before committing time to an application, compare the call against the project and the applicant. A directory entry or broad program description cannot establish that your particular proposal is eligible.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Rank #4
- Applicant and institution: Check eligible applicant types, institutional affiliation, and any nonprofit or other organizational requirements.
- Career stage: Determine whether the mechanism is intended for postdoctoral fellows, established investigators, or a defined team.
- Project scope: Match the research question, population, methods, and expected deliverable to the sponsor’s stated priorities. For federal HIV program opportunities, confirm that research is eligible, rather than assuming all HIV-related funding covers research.
- Geography: Check country and location rules for the applicant, institution, and any collaborators.
- Award terms: Confirm award type, amount, duration, and rules for direct and indirect costs in the actual notice.
- Competition and timing: Establish whether the call is open, investigator-initiated, or invitation-only, and verify the live deadline and submission requirements.
A practical search workflow
- Define the project. Write a short summary and identify its population, research question, methods, stage of work, and anticipated deliverable.
- Search federal sources. Search Grants.gov for the core topic and likely mechanisms, then use NIH’s funding search tools to narrow the results by institute, topic, and mechanism.
- Look for specialist leads. Search HIVSource and follow promising directory entries to each funder’s official opportunity page.
- Screen the notice. Check applicant type, institution, geography, career stage, project fit, award terms, cost rules, deadline, and required materials.
- Choose the right amfAR route, if relevant. Separate Target Grants from postdoctoral fellowships and invitation-only Horizon Grants, then read the current request for proposals.
- Resolve unclear points before drafting. Ask the sponsor or your institutional research office about uncertain eligibility or fit.
What this funding map does—and does not—cover
This is a U.S.-weighted starting map, not a complete worldwide directory or a list of currently open calls. The sources above identify federal navigation tools and selected HIV-focused leads, but they do not establish every country’s research council, private foundation, industry-sponsored award, or local eligibility rules. For any opportunity, the sponsor’s current notice takes precedence over an aggregator listing or an older deadline.
