Usually, no. A regular external USB HDD or SSD can store Xbox Series X|S-optimized games, but those games generally need to be moved to the console’s internal storage or a compatible Storage Expansion Card before you can play them. Xbox One and earlier backward-compatible games can be played directly from USB storage.
Can you play Xbox Series X|S games from a USB drive?
It depends on the game’s generation and the type of storage. An ordinary USB drive works as a place to keep games, but storage and playability are not the same thing: most games optimized for Series X|S must be on internal storage or a compatible Storage Expansion Card to launch. Seagate’s Xbox storage guidance explains which storage types can be used for optimized games.

Xbox One and earlier backward-compatible titles are the practical exception. Xbox Wire says previous-generation titles can run from external USB 3.2 drives, and Xbox program director Jason Ronald said Xbox One and earlier games can run directly from an external USB drive. See the Xbox Series X|S technology glossary and the Xbox Wire podcast with Ronald.
What each storage option can do
| Storage type | Store Xbox Series X|S-optimized games | Play Xbox Series X|S-optimized games | Play Xbox One and earlier games |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular external USB HDD or SSD | Yes | Generally no; move the game to internal storage or a compatible Storage Expansion Card first. | Yes, for compatible titles. |
| Console internal storage | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Compatible Storage Expansion Card | Yes | Yes | Yes |
The Storage Expansion Card is a dedicated Xbox accessory, not a standard USB drive. Xbox Wire identifies it as an Xbox Series X|S storage solution, and Seagate lists the card as a location for playing optimized games.

How to use a USB drive for optimized games
- Keep optimized games you are not currently playing on the external USB drive to free space on the console.
- When you want to play one, move it to the console’s internal storage or a compatible Storage Expansion Card.
- Launch it from that supported storage location. You can move it back to USB later if you need room.
This approach uses USB storage as an archive for less frequently played optimized games, rather than as the place they launch from.
Do you need an expansion card?
No, not if you are willing to move optimized games between USB storage and the console’s internal storage. If you want expanded storage from which optimized games can launch, a compatible Storage Expansion Card is the dedicated option. A regular external USB drive does not serve the same purpose.

Check the requirements for a specific game
Some informal claims suggest exceptions among optimized titles, but there is no reliable current official list establishing which, if any, can launch directly from ordinary USB storage. Check the game’s current requirements if direct USB play for a particular optimized title is important. Do not assume that the ability to store a game on USB means it can launch there.
The available guidance cited here does not establish a current minimum USB capacity or formatting requirement. Consult current Xbox or drive-manufacturer instructions for setup details.
