The safest purchase is therefore tied to your actual account and mod requirements: use the verified store page for the platform you will play on, read the package description, and do not treat an unsolicited key, an old screenshot or a marketplace listing as proof that you will receive the original Steam build.

What changed, and why availability is moving
Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition launched on 13 October 2026. Two days later, on 15 October, SEGA and Creative Assembly said they were working with platform holders to remove Complete Edition from sale and reinstate the original game while they investigated launch problems. Their statement acknowledged, “We agree that the current experience is not where it needs to be.”

The dates come from official Total War, Creative Assembly and SEGA communications. They do not provide a guaranteed future timetable for relisting or explain when every platform will show the original build.
Which storefront currently documents the original game and DLC?
The official FAQ makes a specific distinction between Steam and the other listed storefronts. That distinction matters more than a retailer’s use of the words “complete,” “all DLC” or “original.”

“Not promised” does not mean that a platform can never change its package. It means the cited official description does not establish entitlement to the original Steam build or its legacy DLC there. If that distinction is important to you, buy only after the live listing states what you need.

The official FAQ describes Complete Edition as an updated and enhanced version of Shogun 2 and all its DLC. For Steam, it expressly says the purchase includes the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 and associated DLC. That is the clearest documented route for someone who wants the pre-remaster game alongside the expansion catalog.

These names are examples from the catalog, not a replacement for checking the current package description. A listing can change its entitlement rules during a migration, so compare the text on the page attached to your account with the FAQ’s Steam wording before purchase.
Do not confuse a package label with a platform entitlement
“Complete Edition” is a product name, not proof that every platform receives the same executable, account entitlement or mod support. The FAQ’s wording is platform-specific: Steam includes the original game and associated DLC; Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG are described as Complete Edition only. A key that activates one of those stores does not create a Steam license.
Workshop mods and the original build
Mod support is the biggest practical reason to distinguish the original Steam version from Complete Edition. The official FAQ says original Shogun 2 mods are not compatible with Complete Edition’s Mod.IO support. Legacy mods remain tied to the original build.
If you rely on Steam Workshop
- Purchase through the verified Steam listing whose description follows the FAQ’s inclusion language.
- After activation, open your Steam library and confirm that the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 entry is available in addition to any Complete Edition entry or launcher.
- Open the game’s Workshop area and check that subscriptions, launch options and your established mod workflow are present before changing files.
- Keep a backup of working mod profiles and campaign saves. A migration or reinstall can alter load order even when your account still owns the content.
Do not install a legacy mod into a Complete Edition Mod.IO environment expecting it to work. A mod can fail to appear, fail at launch or destabilize a campaign because the two systems are not interchangeable.
If mods are not important
You can choose a platform based on the account ecosystem you already use, but still verify the package. The official documentation does not promise the original Steam executable on Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store or GOG. If a particular expansion or old save matters, obtain written entitlement details from the live listing or platform support before paying.

A safe buying workflow
Use this process each time you encounter a new listing, especially while the publisher is changing availability.
- Begin at an official source. Navigate from the current Total War, Creative Assembly or SEGA announcement, or open the verified product page in Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store or GOG. Avoid links sent by unsolicited messages and pages that hide the activating platform.
- Read the package description, not just the title. On Steam, look for wording that the purchase includes the original game and associated DLC. On the other listed stores, treat “Complete Edition only” as the documented entitlement unless the live page now says otherwise.
- Match the account and platform. Sign in to the account you will actually use. A Steam key is not an Epic, Microsoft or GOG entitlement, and ownership on one account does not transfer to another.
- Check your mod requirement before checkout. If you need Workshop or legacy mods, the original Steam build is the relevant target. Complete Edition’s Mod.IO support is not compatible with those original mods.
- Confirm availability immediately before payment. The 15 October removal/reinstatement announcement means a cached page, search result or old product code may no longer describe the live offer.
- Save your receipt and package details. Keep the order confirmation, store name, product name and any entitlement text. Those details are essential if the wrong edition appears in your library.
Choosing by your goal
“I want the original game plus every expansion”
Steam is the strongest documented choice because the FAQ explicitly links its Complete Edition purchase to the original game and associated DLC. Verify that the listing is active and that the purchase is made on the Steam account where you want to play.
“I want to use old Workshop campaigns and unit mods”
Prioritize the original Steam build and avoid assuming that Complete Edition’s Mod.IO layer can load legacy files. Confirm the original entry appears in your library before subscribing to a large mod collection.
“I already use Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store or GOG”
Those storefronts are identified as official Complete Edition stores, but the cited FAQ describes their purchases as Complete Edition only. Buy there only if that edition meets your needs and the current page clearly explains the content you require. Do not buy expecting a Steam license or Steam Workshop entitlement.
“I already owned the game”
The 15 October announcement says existing owners retain access. Sign in to the account that originally purchased the game and check the library before buying again. If the title is missing, use that platform’s support process with your receipt rather than purchasing a second key from an intermediary.

Listings and purchase methods to avoid
Unverified third-party keys
A reseller may advertise “original,” “Steam,” or “all DLC” without establishing the activation platform or the exact edition. A code can be region-restricted, already redeemed, revoked or tied to a different storefront. None of those labels overrides the official platform entitlement.
Old physical or marketplace listings
No source-backed physical product was established for this availability change. Do not promise yourself an Amazon copy or treat a marketplace photograph as proof of a redeemable license. Ask the seller for the current platform, edition and activation method; if those details cannot be independently verified, walk away.
Cached pages and screenshots
Search engines and deal pages can retain the pre-removal package. Use the live store page and the publisher’s dated announcement, not a screenshot, to determine whether a transaction is currently valid.
What to do when something goes wrong
The product page disappeared before payment
Stop and do not substitute a similarly named key. Recheck the official announcement and the platform’s own store later. The removal process is active, so disappearance may reflect a package change rather than a problem with your account.
You bought a non-Steam Complete Edition but expected the original
Check the receipt and activation platform first. The FAQ documents Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG purchases as Complete Edition only. If the listing materially differed from what was sold, contact that storefront’s support promptly and provide the saved description; do not attempt to redeem the same code on Steam.
DLC appears to be missing
Open the platform’s library or downloadable-content page and compare the entitlements with the receipt. On Steam, the FAQ’s documented inclusion is the original game and associated DLC. If an item is absent, refresh the license, restart the client and then open a support ticket with the transaction ID.
A legacy mod fails to load
Verify which executable you launched. Original mods are tied to the original build and are not compatible with Complete Edition’s Mod.IO support. Switch to the original Steam entry when available, disable incompatible files and restore your backed-up load order.
The key was redeemed on the wrong account
Platform licenses generally remain attached to the account that redeemed them. Contact the store’s support team with the receipt immediately; a seller’s promise that the code can be moved is not evidence that a transfer is possible.

- Which storefront will activate this product?
- Does the live description explicitly include the original Total War: SHOGUN 2?
- Does it list associated DLC, and does that match the expansions you need?
- Will you receive a Steam Workshop-compatible original build, or only Complete Edition with Mod.IO?
- Is the listing still live after the 15 October 2026 removal announcement?
- What account will own the license, and where will refunds or support be handled?
For the original game, its expansion catalog and legacy Workshop compatibility, the documented path is a verified Steam Complete Edition purchase that explicitly includes the original. Every other route requires you to accept the narrower “Complete Edition only” description or obtain clearer entitlement language from the current platform page before payment.
