As of 19 October 2026, no verified official digital purchase page was found for Lionhead’s Black & White (2001) or Black & White 2 (2005) on the Steam or GOG purchase paths checked. GOG’s current page for Black & White 2 is a Dreamlist request, not a product listing: it has no checkout, price, or confirmed installer.
The practical legal option is a genuine second-hand original PC disc. Treat every listing individually: confirm the exact game and edition, region, disc condition, included serial or activation key, seller reputation, and return protection. An unverified download or “lifetime key” is not equivalent to an official release.

Identify the games before you buy
Storefront searches are especially risky for this series because “Black & White” is a common title. The games covered here are the Lionhead Studios releases published by Electronic Arts for Windows, not another game with a similar name.

Is Black & White on Steam?
No verified official Steam purchase listing for the 2001 Lionhead game was found in the current availability check. Search results can still show unrelated products using the same words, so a visible title alone is not proof that it is the classic game.
How to check a Steam result
- Read the developer and publisher fields, not just the headline.
- Confirm that the description identifies the 2001 Lionhead Windows release.
- Check that the page has a normal purchase button, supported payment flow and an identifiable publisher account.
- If any of those details point to another developer, do not assume you have found the original game.
Because no verified listing was found, do not rely on a third-party Steam key that claims to unlock Black & White. A key seller cannot establish that the code is authorized, unused, region-compatible or still redeemable.
Is the GOG page a real listing or a request?
The GOG page for Black & White 2 is a Dreamlist. Dreamlist pages collect user requests for games that people want GOG to add. The page includes requests and comments asking for an official release and an easy installer, but it does not function as a store product page.

- No confirmed GOG release of Black & White 2.

Where you can legally look today
Second-hand original PC media
A genuine used PC CD-ROM is the defensible route that remains worth investigating. A resale-marketplace account from the GOG Dreamlist discussion describes obtaining an original CD copy this way. That example supports looking at reputable resale listings; it does not verify a particular seller, marketplace, price, stock level or activation code.
Physical media does not automatically make every listing safe. A disc can be counterfeit, damaged, incomplete, from the wrong region, or missing a serial number needed for installation. Buying legally means checking the provenance and contents of the specific copy, not merely choosing a listing that uses the right title.
What to request from a seller
- Clear photographs of the disc label, data side, case and all printed inserts.
- The exact edition and region shown on the packaging.
- Confirmation of whether a serial number or activation key is included, and whether it has already been used.
- The seller’s return terms if the disc cannot be read or the package is incomplete.
- A description of scratches, cracks, missing manuals or replacement cases.
If a seller refuses basic photos or gives only a generic download link, move on. Do not send payment for a “backup copy,” “pre-installed version” or “lifetime key” when there is no verifiable publisher source.

Step-by-step checklist for buying a used copy
- Start with the exact title. Decide whether you want Black & White (2001) or Black & White 2 (October 2005). Do not rely on a seller’s shortened title.
- Confirm the platform. The releases covered here are Microsoft Windows PC games. A listing that mentions only a console, Mac download or generic “PC game” needs clarification.
- Match the publisher and developer. Look for Lionhead Studios and Electronic Arts on the packaging or description. If the listing names another studio, ask why before buying.
- Ask for photographs. Request the front and back of the disc, the data side, the case, manuals and any serial card. Stock art alone is not evidence that the seller owns the original media.
- Check the disc condition. Ask about deep scratches, cracks around the centre hole, disc rot, unreadable areas and whether the seller has tested the disc. A seller’s statement is not a guarantee, so retain return protection.
- Verify the region and edition. Packaging should identify the market and edition. Ask whether the key, manual and original inserts belong to that exact release rather than being mixed from another copy.
- Clarify activation requirements. Ask whether installation uses a printed serial, an online activation code or no code. Confirm that any code is unused and that the seller will accept a return if it has already been redeemed.
- Read the return policy before paying. A policy that excludes software, opened media or “digital goods” may leave you without a remedy. Save the listing, photographs and messages.
- Use a payment method with buyer protection. Keep the transaction on the marketplace where possible. Avoid off-platform transfers requested after you ask normal verification questions.
- Inspect the package on arrival. Photograph the parcel before opening, compare every component with the listing and test the disc promptly. Report a mismatch within the stated return window.
Digital keys, downloads and counterfeit listings
Older PC games attract listings that promise an instant download or a “lifetime” activation key. Those phrases describe a seller’s offer, not proof of a current licence. Without an official publisher or store page that validates the code, you cannot establish that the key was legitimately issued, has not been redeemed, works in your region or will remain available after purchase.
Warning signs
- The listing provides only a username and password for a shared account.
- The seller says the game is “pre-installed” and supplies files instead of original media.
- The product title omits Lionhead, Electronic Arts, the release year or the Windows platform.
- The seller refuses to show the serial card or claims that photographs are unnecessary.
- The offer depends on disabling security software or running an unknown launcher.
- The seller calls a community patch an official re-release.
These signs do not prove a specific listing is unlawful, but they leave the key facts unverified. The safest response is not to buy unless the seller can document an authentic copy and a usable return path.
Region, edition and key checks
“Original CD” is not a complete specification. Different releases can package the game differently, and a code printed for one market may not work elsewhere. Before paying, ask the seller to transcribe the edition and region exactly as printed, then compare that information with the listing title and photographs.

- Is this the 2001 Black & White release or the 2005 Black & White 2 release?
- Which country or region is printed on the disc or box?
- Is the serial or activation key physically included?
- Has the key ever been entered or linked to an account?
- Are all discs present, and are the manuals or installation inserts included?
- What happens if the disc cannot be read or the key is already used?
Written answers help if the delivered item differs from the description. They also expose listings assembled from mismatched parts.

Windows and Mac availability
Both games were released for Microsoft Windows. A historical Mac release is not evidence of a current Mac App Store product: no current Mac App Store purchase was verified, and the older Mac availability should not be assumed to continue.
Buying the original disc also does not promise that a modern computer will install or run it without adjustment. Compatibility is a separate technical question from legality. Do not let a seller present an unofficial compatibility utility, patched executable or downloaded image as proof that the copy is authorized. First establish that you are buying legitimate media; investigate compatibility only afterward.

Stock, seller accounts and rights-holder announcements can change. Repeat these checks immediately before payment:

- Search the official Steam, GOG, EA and Epic Games Store paths for a normal product page, not a search snippet or community post.
- Open the result and verify the developer, publisher, release identity and purchase controls.
- For GOG, distinguish a Dreamlist request from a page that shows a price, checkout and downloadable installer.
- For resale listings, compare multiple photographs and read the newest seller feedback.
- Record the displayed price, shipping, region and return deadline; these details are volatile.
- If an official re-release appears, prefer that authenticated listing over an unverified key or a used copy.
A search-engine result, forum comment or cached page cannot substitute for the live product page. If no official page is present on the day you check, the used-disc route remains the option to investigate, subject to the verification steps above.
Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing a same-name game with Lionhead’s release
“Black & White” is not unique enough to identify the series. Always match the year, developer and publisher.
Treating a Dreamlist as a purchase
A request page records demand. It does not grant a licence, provide an installer or guarantee that a release is scheduled.

Ignoring regional restrictions
A copy can be genuine yet unsuitable for your market or activation system. Confirm the region printed on the package and the seller’s return terms.
What a legitimate purchase should leave you with
At minimum, you should receive the correct Lionhead game, authentic original media or an authenticated official store download, the components needed for installation, and a clear remedy if the item is not as described. For a used disc, keep the invoice, listing screenshots, seller messages and photographs until you have checked the disc and any key.
If a rights holder later announces an official re-release, evaluate that page on its own terms: verify the publisher identity, supported operating systems, account or DRM requirements, refund policy and regional availability. Until such a page exists, do not convert a request page or an anonymous key listing into evidence that the game is officially sold.
