On many laptops, the built-in microphone is near the display, often around the webcam or along the top bezel. It may instead sit elsewhere near the display or keyboard, and some laptops have more than one. Check the component diagram in your exact model’s user guide before treating an unidentified opening as a microphone.
Where to look first
Open the laptop and inspect the top edge of the screen and the area around the webcam. Look for small openings or a microphone symbol. If you do not find one, check the rest of the display bezel and the keyboard or hinge area. Manufacturers place microphones differently, so appearance and proximity alone are not enough to identify a particular opening.

For example, HP documentation for specific models places internal microphones among the display components; one such guide identifies two microphones. Lenovo guides for specific models also show microphones in the front-view display area. These are model-specific examples, not a universal layout for either manufacturer.
How to identify the microphone correctly
A webcam lens, camera activity light, privacy shutter, microphone opening, and microphone-mute indicator are separate components. Manufacturer diagrams may label them separately even when they are close together. Use the guide’s component names rather than guessing from the size or position of a pinhole.

The headphone or headset jack is not the built-in microphone. It connects an external headset or microphone, and the supported connection type depends on the laptop. Do not insert anything into a suspected opening or open the laptop to look for the microphone.
Find the exact model’s component diagram
- Find the laptop’s model name or number on the device or in its system information.
- Search the manufacturer’s support site for that exact model and open its user guide.
- Look for a labelled illustration under a heading such as “components,” “front view,” or “display components,” or search the guide for “microphone.”
- Use the diagram to distinguish the microphone from the camera, indicator lights, mute control, speakers, and audio jack.
The model guide is more reliable than a general placement rule. Lenovo’s general guidance says built-in microphones are typically near the display or keyboard area, but the exact location depends on the device.

If you are trying to check whether it works
Finding the opening does not confirm that the computer or an app is using that microphone. Check the operating system’s input meter or a recording or calling app, and confirm that the built-in microphone is selected and microphone access is allowed. Menu names vary by operating-system version, so use current Microsoft or Apple instructions for the precise steps.
Also check the model guide for a physical microphone-mute control. For one documented Lenovo model, the guide identifies a control that mutes or unmutes the integrated microphones and a separate mute indicator. Do not assume that a camera privacy shutter also disables audio.

If you are troubleshooting an external headset or microphone, check the laptop maker’s guidance for your model: audio-jack capabilities differ. A headset is an optional alternative if you want a microphone closer to your mouth; whether it works depends on the laptop’s jack or USB ports and the headset.
