Where Do Case Fans Get Power? Headers, Hubs, and Splitters

A case fan plugged into a motherboard header draws power from it; a separately powered hub may draw fan power from the PSU and use the board for control.

Yes—when a case fan is plugged directly into a motherboard fan header, that header supplies its electrical power. A fan connected to a separately powered hub may instead draw operating power from the power supply, while the motherboard connection carries speed-control signals and may provide an RPM reading. Which arrangement applies depends on the fan, hub, and motherboard.

How a direct motherboard connection works

A case fan connected to a system-fan header—often labeled SYS_FAN, CHA_FAN, or something similar—gets power through that header. The motherboard can also control fan speed and read the fan’s RPM, if the header and fan support those functions.

Three-pin and four-pin plugs use different speed-control methods. A compatible motherboard may control a three-pin fan by varying the supplied voltage; a four-pin fan adds a PWM control signal. The available modes and settings depend on the specific header and motherboard. GIGABYTE’s Q670M D3H DDR4 manual, for example, identifies ground, voltage speed control, sense, and PWM speed control pins on its four-pin fan headers: GIGABYTE Q670M D3H DDR4 manual.

How a powered fan hub differs

A hub can separate the fan’s power source from its control connection. In Phanteks’ Enthoo Elite instructions, the hub connects to PSU SATA power and to a motherboard fan header with a four-pin cable. In that specific setup, Fan 1 provides the RPM signal used by the hub. The PSU supplies operating power; the motherboard connection handles control and RPM reporting as described by the hub’s design. See the Phanteks Enthoo Elite installation instructions.

#1 Best Overall
JBtek All Black Sleeved PWM Fan Splitter Cable 1 to 2 Converter, 2 Pack
  • Length 240mm, pack of two computer fan splitter cables
  • One-to-two PWM fan splitter
  • Beautiful all black sleeved cable
  • Supports 2 PWM fans from a single motherboard PWM header
  • Compatible with 4pin PMW fan connector and 3pin fan connector

That wiring is an example, not a rule for every hub. Read the hub manual to identify its PSU power input, required motherboard connection, compatible fan types, and which port—if any—reports RPM. Trace both cables rather than assuming that a motherboard lead is supplying the fans’ full operating power.

What changes when you use a splitter?

A splitter lets multiple fans share one motherboard header, so the fans draw power through that header. Its electrical limit still applies: add the connected fans’ current draw and compare the total with the rating for the exact header on your motherboard. There is no universal safe number of fans per header because ratings vary by board and header.

Cable Matters 2-Pack 3 Way 4-Pin PWM Fan Splitter Cable, 12 inches / 30 cm
  • Triple Fan Connection Solution: The 4 pin fan splitter cable connects up to 3 computer case fans to a single motherboard fan header. This PWM splitter cable lets you add an additional fan to improve airflow inside your PC. A fan speed label on the 4 pin master connector of the fan header splitter is wired to receive the PWM control signal and distribute it to all slave fans for synchronized cooling.
  • Unified PWM Control: The 3 way fan splitter (also known as a motherboard fan splitter, CPU fan splitter, or PC fan splitter 4 pin) connects to a 4-pin motherboard header and splits the signal across 3 PWM fans. Control fan speed uniformly through motherboard software for efficient, balanced cooling performance.
  • Synchronized Speed Management: The 4pin fan splitter features one 4-pin connector that sends the RPM signal back to the motherboard to synchronize fan speed across the other two fans. The 3 pin fan splitter omits the RPM signal pin, allowing all connected fans to run in tandem when supported by your system—perfect for setups where you need to daisy chain PC fans for optimized airflow.
  • Spare Cable Convenience Pack: This cost-effective 2-pack of computer fan splitter 4 pin cables includes a spare for future upgrades or extra fans. Each sleeved and wrapped black 12-inch case fan splitter cable provides a clean, professional look inside an open PC case and helps organize your cable management.
  • Wide Compatibility for Enhanced Cooling: Compatible with both 3-pin and 4-pin fans, this PWM fan splitter cable works with popular models such as the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 120mm, Cooler Master MegaFlow 200mm, and other large 230mm case fans. Easily expand your system’s cooling capacity with this reliable PWM fan splitter cable.

ASUS advises connecting a splitter to its primary header and notes that fan speed is synchronized with the RPM of the first fan. That guidance describes the splitter arrangement in ASUS’s computer-chassis fan-cable guidance; check your own board and splitter documentation before applying it. MSI likewise explains that ratings can differ among header categories and motherboard models in its motherboard ports and headers guide.

How to identify the right connection

  1. Find the exact motherboard model. Use its manual to locate system or chassis fan headers, their current limits, and supported DC or PWM control modes. Header names and locations differ across boards.
  2. Identify the fan’s motor plug. Match its three-pin or four-pin connector to a fan header or hub port, and check the motherboard or hub instructions for supported control options.
  3. Keep lighting cables separate. RGB or ARGB plugs power or control lighting, not the fan motor. Confirm labels and pin layouts in the relevant manuals before connecting them.
  4. If using a hub, trace both paths. Check which cable connects to the PSU and which connects to the motherboard, then follow the hub’s directions for control and RPM reporting.
  5. If using a splitter, check the load. Verify the total fan current against the specific motherboard header rating and follow the splitter instructions.

Keep the CPU cooler connection distinct

Do not confuse a case-fan header with the dedicated CPU_FAN connection used for a CPU cooler. MSI describes CPU_FAN and system-fan headers as separate connection types in its motherboard header guide. Follow your motherboard’s manual for the CPU cooler and case fans rather than treating all fan headers as interchangeable.
