Copying a file creates a second copy in another location while leaving the original where it is. The basic process is to select the file, copy it, open the destination folder, and paste it. The keyboard shortcuts depend on your operating system.
What does it mean to copy a file?
Copying makes a duplicate at a destination; it does not remove the original. That differs from cutting and pasting, which is used to move a file.

Copy a file with a file manager
Windows File Explorer
- Select the file in File Explorer and press Ctrl+C.
- Open the folder where you want the duplicate.
- Press Ctrl+V. You can also use the Copy and Paste commands in File Explorer or its context menu. Microsoft lists Ctrl-dragging a file as another way to create a copy. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts.
macOS Finder
- Select the file in Finder and press Command-C.
- Open the destination folder.
- Press Command-V. You can also choose Copy from the Edit menu or use the right-click or Control-click menu. See Apple’s Mac keyboard shortcuts.
Copy a file with a command
Linux
Use cp SOURCE DEST, replacing the placeholders with the file’s path and the destination. For example, cp report.txt /home/alex/Documents/ copies report.txt into that directory. The Linux manual also documents copying multiple source files to a destination directory; options may differ between implementations, so consult the local manual for advanced use. Windows Command Prompt
Use copy SOURCE DEST. For example, copy memo.doc letter.doc copies the file and gives the copy the name letter.doc in the current location. Microsoft’s reference lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 among applicable systems. The /v option verifies that new files are written correctly. The /y option suppresses overwrite confirmation, while /-y requests confirmation. See Microsoft’s copy command reference.

What if a file with that name is already there?
If the destination contains a file with the same name, check the prompt before proceeding. Choose another folder or rename the copy if you want to keep both files. In Command Prompt, avoid /y unless you intend to overwrite without being asked; command behavior can depend on the options and circumstances.

Which method should you use?
- For one file and a visual workflow, use the file manager: select, copy, open the destination, and paste.
- Use a command when you need to specify exact paths or repeat a copying task.
- Check your operating system before using a shortcut: Windows File Explorer uses Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, while Finder uses Command-C and Command-V.
