Weatherling adds animated rain and snow around open windows on a Mac desktop. It is an ambient visual effect—not a weather forecast—and “windows” means desktop windows, not the Microsoft Windows operating system. The Mac App Store lists version 1.3, which adds snow, adjustable rain-and-snow mixes, a random mode, and optional interactive Lings.
What Weatherling does—and what it does not do
Weatherling is a menu-bar app that overlays simulated precipitation around your open Mac windows. The developer says raindrops land on exposed window edges and run down their sides, while snow gathers on window tops. These are the developer’s product descriptions, not independently tested results.

It does not report local conditions, temperature, radar, or a forecast. You choose the visual effect; it is not connected to the weather outside. It is also not a screensaver or wallpaper: the effect appears over the desktop while you work.

What you can configure
- Precipitation: Choose rain, snow, a mix, or Random. The rain and snow options and mix controls are part of version 1.3.
- Intensity and sound: Adjust precipitation intensity and turn rain audio on or off.
- Displays and Spaces: Select which displays show the effect; the app follows Spaces.
- Apps and full-screen: Set per-app pause rules. By default, Weatherling pauses on a display while a full-screen app is open, but settings allow the effect to appear over full-screen apps.
- Lings: Optional animated characters can be watched, disabled, or interacted with when Interactive mode is enabled. The weather overlay itself is described as click-through.
- Performance options: Quality settings include energy-saving options.
Collection and score stay on the Mac unless you choose to share a score card. The homepage lists autumn leaves and other changes under “Coming in 1.4”; those are roadmap items, not current features listed for version 1.3.

Interaction, privacy, and performance
The developer says Weatherling runs in Apple’s App Sandbox and does not request Screen Recording or Accessibility permission. Its App Store description says there is no account, in-app analytics, or score server. These are statements from the developer, not an independent privacy audit.

The developer’s homepage reports about 3–4% of one CPU core in a recent measured run and cautions that this does not establish battery life. That figure is a developer-reported measurement, not a guarantee for every Mac or workload. Use the available quality settings if you want to reduce the effect’s resource demands.

How to get rain or snow on a Mac desktop
- Open Weatherling’s Mac App Store listing and confirm that your Mac meets the macOS 14.0 minimum.
- Purchase and install the app through the Mac App Store.
- Open Weatherling from the menu bar, then choose rain, snow, a mix, or Random and set the intensity.
- Adjust sound, selected displays, per-app pause rules, and full-screen behavior to suit how you use your Mac.
- If you want to interact with Lings, enable Interactive mode; otherwise, leave the optional characters disabled or simply watch them.
