Apple has reportedly asked Samsung Display and LG Display to develop OLED panels that would bring an iPhone closer to a bezel-free design. But there is no confirmed launch date, final display specification, or evidence that Samsung is the sole supplier for this project. Reports since 2023 describe evolving—and sometimes conflicting—design and timing claims, not an announced iPhone.
What Apple is reportedly trying to build
“Bezel-free” and “zero-bezel” are loose terms in the reporting. They describe a goal of reducing or eliminating the visible border around the active display; the reports do not define a final Apple design or establish literal pixels wrapping around every edge.

The earliest account, published by MacRumors on July 24, 2023, said Apple had asked both Samsung Display and LG Display to develop bezel-free OLED panels. That was a reported development request, not a production contract or a confirmed product plan. The report said Apple wanted to preserve a flat display, citing concerns about optical distortion and durability with curved screens. MacRumors’ 2023 report
How the reports and proposed designs have changed
| Date | Reported claim | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| July 24, 2023 | Apple reportedly asked Samsung Display and LG Display to develop bezel-free OLED panels, with a flat-screen preference. | A reported supplier-development effort—not a production award or launch confirmation. MacRumors |
| December 26, 2024 | A report relayed by Gadgets 360 said a 2026 launch looked unfeasible while technical discussions continued. | A forecast about development status at that time, not a new confirmed release year. Gadgets 360 |
| April 24, 2026 | MacRumors relayed a rumor of a shallow, equal-depth curve on all four edges and a “pol-less” OLED for a rumored 2027 anniversary iPhone. | An attributed design rumor, not an official specification or confirmed schedule. MacRumors |
| September 22, 2026 | AppleInsider reported UBI Research’s projection that COE could reach Pro iPhones in late 2029. | A later forecast that conflicts with the 2027 COE rumor; neither date is an Apple-confirmed roadmap. AppleInsider |
The proposed edge shape has shifted from a reportedly flat panel in 2023 to very shallow “micro-curves” in the 2026 leak. That could reflect changed design goals, a different panel concept, or simply an unverified rumor; the available reporting cannot determine which. The rumored micro-curves should not be confused with the more dramatic waterfall-style curved screens used on some phones.

Why the display is technically difficult
The reports describe several engineering challenges, but do not establish which—if any—remains the primary obstacle today. The explanations below come from secondary reporting, not published Apple or Samsung engineering documents.
- Thin-film encapsulation (TFE): Reporting ties TFE, which protects OLED components, to the work needed for the proposed panel. The sources do not provide a detailed implementation or confirm the current state of development.
- Circuits and component space: A 2024 account described folding display circuits below the screen while retaining space for other components. Antenna placement and possible interference were also cited as concerns.
- Adhesive bonding: The same account identified optical clear adhesive as another challenge in achieving the reported design.
- Under-panel camera: The 2023 and 2024 reports connected under-panel camera integration with development or timing challenges. Hiding a camera beneath a display could reduce a visible cutout in principle, but these sources do not verify an iPhone implementation or its image quality.
- Curved-edge trade-offs: The 2023 report cited distortion and durability concerns around curved screens. It supplied no comparative test results, and the later micro-curve rumor does not show that those concerns have been resolved.
What “pol-less” and COE mean
The April 2026 MacRumors account of a leak described a “pol-less” display using Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE). In the explanation given there, COE moves the color filter onto the encapsulation layer and removes the polarizing film. The report said the thinner stack could let more light through and reduce power draw, while making reflections harder to manage. Those are technology explanations, not measured performance results for a future iPhone.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
COE timing is particularly uncertain. The 2026 anniversary-iPhone rumor associated the technology with a possible 2027 model, while AppleInsider later reported UBI Research’s projection of Pro iPhone adoption in late 2029. These claims conflict; the reporting does not establish which, if either, will prove accurate.

Is Samsung the only supplier, and is a 2027 iPhone confirmed?
No. The 2023 report named both Samsung Display and LG Display as companies asked to develop panels. The available reporting does not establish a Samsung-only contract for this specific design or confirm that either company has won a production award. The 2027 anniversary iPhone is also a rumor, not a product Apple has announced.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
Apple has not confirmed the rumored anniversary model, a bezel-free panel design, a supplier deal, or a release schedule in the cited reporting. The earlier 2026 forecast and later 2027 and 2029 claims are dated reports, not a reliable public roadmap.
