A construction-sector ETF can be riskier than a broad-market fund because it concentrates exposure in businesses affected by construction, building materials, engineering or homebuilding. Its returns may be sensitive to economic cycles, borrowing costs, housing and real-estate conditions, labor and material costs, policy and regulation. ETF shares also carry trading risks, including premiums or discounts to net asset value (NAV). A daily leveraged homebuilder ETF adds compounding risk and is not equivalent to an ordinary sector fund.
Why construction-sector ETFs can be more volatile than broad funds
A sector ETF focuses on a narrower part of the market. In its August 28, 2026 prospectus, Invesco says PKB concentrates to a significant degree in the building-and-construction industry and may therefore face greater risk than a fund spread across many industries. If that industry falls out of favor, the fund can underperform the broader market.

Industry-specific pressures can include cyclical supply and demand, competition for resources, labor relations, political or world events, technological change, and products or competitors that alter profitability. These are possible risk factors, not forecasts that any one will drive returns.
What economic and industry factors can affect construction stocks?
Construction companies can be exposed to both the demand for their particular products and wider demand for industrial products. PKB’s prospectus identifies a range of potential influences:
#1 Best Overall
- Interest rates and affordability: Borrowing costs and consumer confidence can affect decisions to buy homes or undertake building projects.
- Housing and real-estate conditions: Demographics, property values and overbuilding can influence demand for construction and related products.
- Input costs and labor: Commodity prices, inflation, competition for resources and labor relations may affect costs or operations.
- Government and regulation: Government spending, zoning laws, taxation and other regulation can shape which projects are possible and their economics.
- Competition and technology: New products, technological change and competitors can affect demand and profitability.
- Broader economic conditions: Economic cycles, consumer spending and world events may influence project activity and business results.
The prospectus lists these as risks; it does not quantify their effects or establish that a particular factor will dominate future performance.
“Construction ETF” can mean different exposures
Do not assume that funds with construction-related names hold the same kinds of companies. For example, PKB seeks to track a building-and-construction index, while ITB’s July 31, 2026 summary prospectus describes an objective tied to an index of U.S. equities in the home-construction sector. A homebuilder-focused fund is not automatically interchangeable with a broader building-and-construction fund.
Rank #2
PKB’s prospectus reports that its underlying index had 30 constituents on June 30, 2026, with market capitalizations ranging from $1.3 billion to $352.0 billion. That is a dated index-composition snapshot, not a current holdings count or a measure of future risk.

ETF market price, NAV and liquidity
An ETF trades on an exchange, so its share price can be above or below the NAV of its portfolio. The SEC’s ETF investor bulletin explains this general feature of ETFs.
Rank #3
Trading can become more difficult when markets are stressed or the underlying holdings are hard to trade. PKB’s prospectus says such conditions may affect portfolio liquidity and the creation-and-redemption process, potentially disrupting trading or widening the difference between the ETF’s market price and NAV. Investors may also face execution costs. An ETF structure does not guarantee constant liquidity or a price equal to NAV.
Extra risks in daily leveraged homebuilder ETFs
A leveraged fund is a distinct product from an ordinary construction-sector ETF. The Direxion Daily Homebuilders & Supplies Bull 3X ETF prospectus states an objective of 300% of its index’s daily performance before fees and expenses. It does not target three times the index’s return over a longer holding period.
Over multiple days, daily returns compound. As a result, the fund’s return can differ from three times the index’s return over the same period; the prospectus says the difference can grow with volatility and holding period. This warning applies to the cited daily leveraged fund type, not to all construction-sector ETFs.
How to assess a particular construction ETF
Before comparing or buying a fund, check the latest official prospectus, index methodology and fund information. The relevant details can change, and the available fund disclosures do not establish a complete current side-by-side comparison of fees, holdings, concentration, performance or liquidity for PKB and ITB.
Best Value
- Keep track of everything from attendance to test scores
- Spiral bound
- Measures 8-1/2" x 11"
- Index and mandate: Identify which construction-related segment the fund tracks.
- Holdings and issuer weights: See how many companies it holds and whether a small number account for a large share of assets.
- Concentration and diversification status: Read the fund’s disclosure rather than inferring diversification from the ETF label.
- Fees and expenses: Use the latest fund documents for current figures.
- Trading and NAV history: Review trading volume, liquidity and premiums or discounts, while remembering past conditions do not guarantee future trading.
- Objective and structure: Check whether the fund seeks ordinary index exposure or uses leverage or derivatives, and understand the period its objective covers.
These risks are educational considerations, not individualized investment advice. The actual exposure and potential loss depend on the fund’s holdings, weights, structure and market conditions.
