In Monster Hunter Wilds, use Tornado Slash as a grounded finisher when the monster is within reach and the opening is long enough to complete the attack. Build toward it with red extract active, then reposition during recovery if the target moves. Vault when you need to reach a part that grounded attacks cannot access in time—not simply because Insect Glaive can fly.
What Tornado Slash does in Wilds
Tornado Slash belongs to Insect Glaive’s grounded pressure: it extends an attack string with a committed finishing strike. Its value depends on whether you can stay on a reachable part long enough to finish and whether the monster’s movement will leave you in a useful position afterward. It is not a guaranteed best choice for every opening.

The move name also appears in Monster Hunter Generations. Capcom’s Generations Insect Glaive manual describes recommended combos, including examples powered by red extract, but its control charts are for that older game. Do not use them as Wilds button instructions.
Prepare with the extracts your route needs
The Kinsect gathers extracts from monster parts. Send it to a marked part and recall it to collect what it has gathered; a charged Kinsect Harvest can pass through more than one part. The color available depends on the part and can vary by monster. The following effects are described in the RedGauge Insect Glaive guide, which identifies itself as updated for Title Update 4.

| Extract | Effect | Why it matters for Tornado Slash |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Enables stronger attacks and lets you charge certain moves. | Gather it before building your grounded attack route. |
| White | Improves movement speed and jump height. | Helps with repositioning or choosing a vault route. |
| Orange | Provides knockback resistance while the weapon is drawn. | Can help you maintain pressure through disruption. |
| Green | Restores health when the Kinsect returns; it does not occupy one of the red, white, or orange slots. | A recovery benefit, rather than one of the three combat extract colors. |
Red and white together raise attack; white and orange together raise defense. Triple extract changes some attacks, raises attack further, and reduces the effects of roars, wind pressure, and tremors. It shares a timer, so using it is also a decision about how long you can keep those benefits active.
Choose grounded pressure or a vault
| Route | Choose it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Grounded string into Tornado Slash | The target part is already reachable and the opening can accommodate the finisher. | You commit to a grounded attack sequence; be ready to reposition during recovery if the monster shifts. |
| Vault and aerial movement | Grounded movement cannot reach the part in time, or the aerial route offers a useful positional or mounting opportunity. | It is a route for access and positioning, not a required link before every grounded finisher. |
A practical decision rule is to check reach before committing: if you are already beside the part you want and the monster is occupied, continue grounded pressure. If the target has moved somewhere grounded attacks cannot reach promptly, vault to change position instead of forcing the finisher from a bad angle.
Decide whether to spend triple extract on Rising Spiral Slash
Tornado Slash and Rising Spiral Slash serve different decisions. The RedGauge guide describes Rising Spiral Slash as a triple-extract spender used after a charged Descending attack. It can suit a longer opening when the monster is likely to remain in the attack’s path, but it consumes the extracts that support continued pressure. Consider the likely hit path and your recovery plan before committing.
- Keep attacking: Favor continued grounded pressure when the monster remains reachable and preserving triple extract supports more useful attacks.
- Spend on the Spiral: Consider it when the opening is longer, the monster is likely to stay in its path, and you have a plan to restore missing extracts afterward.
- Use a wound for recovery when available: Focus Thrust: Leaping Strike on a wound can recover all three extracts. In multiplayer, wounds are shared, so another hunter may destroy the wound before you use it.
These are situational choices, not a universal damage ranking. The available guide does not establish a damage figure or motion-value comparison that would justify claiming one route always deals more damage.

Use the right control reference
Wilds button mappings depend on platform and control settings. The current guide directs players to the in-game Hunter’s Notes for full weapon controls; use those notes to verify the exact sequence for your setup. The official manual linked above is for Generations, not Wilds. Because the retrieved Wilds material does not establish a move-specific button sequence, this guide avoids giving controller or keyboard inputs that could be wrong for your configuration.
