But “free to download” and “free to use without a subscription” are not the same thing—and there are free or subscription-free options to check before starting a project of your own.
The right choice depends on what you need to track, where your records live, how you back them up, and whether you are comfortable entering transactions manually. The apps below are described by their developers; their pages are not independent security audits, and features or availability may change.

What a subscription prompt does—and does not—tell you
A free download may still reserve particular features for a paid tier. For example, Mizan’s listing describes monthly and yearly premium tiers alongside a one-time lifetime option, while Oinkoin describes free expense and budgeting functions with optional Pro features. That does not mean every free expense tracker requires a subscription; it means you should check which capabilities are included and whether the charge recurs.

Before choosing an app, identify the features you actually rely on: recurring transactions, budgets, reports, CSV import or export, backup and restore, or automatic bank linking. A paid tier matters only if it gates something you need. Check the current listing for the price and terms in your region rather than assuming the same plan or feature set applies everywhere.

Compare options by cost, data location, and workflow

Choose a data and sync model you can live with
Local and offline
A local-only tracker keeps its ledger on your device according to its developer’s description. Minty Flow is described this way, and Mizan describes on-device tracking. This can avoid dependence on a vendor-hosted ledger, but it does not automatically give you a backup or sync between devices. Find out how records are preserved if you replace, lose, or reset your phone.
Self-hosted or managed cloud
FinX describes local, self-hosted, and optional managed-cloud modes. Local use can avoid account setup; self-hosting gives you another way to manage where data resides but adds setup and maintenance. Managed sync may be more convenient, so check its current terms and costs before relying on it.

Your own cloud folder
Spendium describes optional sync to the user’s own Google Drive or OneDrive. That is different from a vendor hosting the ledger, but you still need to understand how the app syncs and backs up files, and which account and folder are involved. Verify that workflow in the current app before treating it as a dependable backup.

Check export and backup before entering months of data
Portability is easier to assess before you have a large ledger. FinX describes CSV or JSON export, while Minty Flow describes CSV import and export. Oinkoin’s listing places backup and restore and CSV import/export among optional Pro features, so check whether those tools are included in the version you can use.

- Confirm whether export is available and which formats it supports.
- Find out whether backups are automatic or require you to trigger them.
- Check where backup files are stored and whether you can restore them on another device.
- If you plan to switch apps, verify that the new app can import the format you can export.
What open source can—and cannot—tell you
Minty Flow and XPENC describe themselves as open source. That can let interested users inspect project code, but it is not by itself proof that an app is secure, that its published build matches the reviewed code, or that its data handling meets your expectations. The project descriptions establish what their developers claim, not the result of an independent code or app audit.

A custom app is most defensible when you have a specific need existing options do not meet, or you want control over the workflow and are prepared to maintain it. The title alone does not establish what a particular custom tracker does, how it stores data, whether it connects to banks, or how it was tested. Those details matter before anyone can judge its reliability, security, or suitability.

If you build one, decide up front how entries are added, where the ledger is stored, how backups and exports work, and whether recurring transactions, budgets, or reports are necessary. Then compare that work with an existing local, self-hosted, or optional-sync app. A simple manual-entry tool may be enough; automatic bank linking, cross-device sync, and robust recovery can add meaningful complexity.

A practical way to decide
- List the features you actually use, separating essentials from conveniences.
- For each candidate, check the current paid-feature list and whether any charge recurs.
- Choose a data model: local-only, self-hosted, vendor-managed cloud, or sync through your own cloud folder.
- Verify export, backup, and restore before making the app your only ledger.
- Try entering representative transactions and check whether the workflow is sustainable.
- Build your own only if those checks reveal a concrete gap worth maintaining a custom app to solve.
