Ray Gunn is an animated science-fiction detective film directed by Brad Bird, the filmmaker behind The Incredibles. It follows private eye Raymond Gunn through Metropia, an alternate-future city imagined from a 1939 perspective, where a case involving aliens, murder, and multimedia star Venus Nova brings classic noir into a retro-futurist setting.
What is Ray Gunn about?
Netflix’s official logline places the story in Metropia, a gigantic city in an alternate future. Raymond Gunn is a private investigator drawn into a case involving aliens, murder, and Venus Nova, a multimedia star. Netflix Tudum describes Venus as the world’s most famous pop star, whose scandals threaten both her career and her safety.

Ray is a small-time detective in a world where machines have taken over much of the investigative work. He and his one-eyed alien partner, Eyera, are among the investigators who still work by hand; small “pry bots” handle much of the legwork. The case pulls Ray into Venus’s circle and across the divide between Metropia’s glamorous heights and criminal underworld.
Why is it described as a sci-fi noir?
Bird has described the film as “a blend of sci-fi and classic detective movies from the ’40s.” His shorthand for the idea was “The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers.” Those are the director’s descriptions of the film’s influences, not a review or a Netflix tagline.

A 1939 vision of the future
Metropia combines streamlined, Art Deco-inflected cityscapes with futuristic conveniences such as flying cars and jetpacks. The city’s optimistic surface sits alongside murder, corruption, and shadowy crime. That contrast is what gives the premise its neo-noir character: the setting looks sleek and forward-looking, while the investigation leads into a darker world.
Animation for an adult-shaped story
The premise is not limited to a children’s adventure. Bird has said he wants to challenge assumptions about which stories animation can tell, calling the medium too interesting to be restricted to particular audiences or genres. The available official descriptions emphasize detective work, celebrity scandal, and murder within a science-fiction setting.
