When is a BIOS update worth installing?
BIOS and UEFI are firmware that help initialize a computer and hand control to the operating system. A manufacturer may release an update to fix a documented defect, improve stability or compatibility, support a processor or other hardware, or change a specific feature. The practical question is whether the release applies to your exact PC or motherboard and solves a relevant need.

ASUS recommends installing an official update when it aligns with the user’s requirements and its instructions are followed. Its Windows BIOS update guidance lists possible reasons including bug fixes, compatibility, stability, hardware support, and feature changes. Dell likewise provides a model-specific BIOS and UEFI update guide.

A firmware or security notice can matter even if the computer appears to work normally. Microsoft’s Secure Boot troubleshooting guidance, published in March 2026, explains that correct UEFI behavior is important to Secure Boot certificate servicing and that some systems may need an OEM firmware update. Microsoft also notes that TPM settings are controlled through device-specific UEFI settings in its TPM 2.0 guidance. These are specific compatibility and security cases, not a blanket reason to install every release.

If the release notes describe no fix, security need, or hardware support relevant to your system, waiting is reasonable. The sources do not establish that every update improves speed or performance.
How to decide for your exact computer
- Identify the device precisely. Find the full PC model or, for a custom-built computer, the motherboard model and revision. Check the installed firmware version using the manufacturer’s documented method.
- Read the release notes. Look for the problem fixed, hardware supported, security or compatibility requirement, and any stated urgency. Confirm that the update is intended for your exact model and revision.
- Check prerequisites. Some releases may require an intermediate firmware version or a specific update path. Do not skip a required step.
- Check your readiness. Confirm you can follow the complete model-specific process, keep power connected, and access your BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled.
- Make the call. Install when the documented change applies and you can meet the instructions. Otherwise, defer rather than updating solely because a newer version exists.
Is it safe to update BIOS?
A BIOS update is a firmware operation, not a routine Windows application install. If the process is interrupted or fails, the computer may no longer start. ASUS warns that a failed update can leave a device unable to boot and says not to force a shutdown; Dell instructs users to keep the computer connected to AC power during its procedure. These sources do not give a universal failure rate, so there is no sound basis for claiming that updates commonly brick computers or for assigning a percentage risk.

- The Data Recovery Stick requires no technical skills — simply plug it into your Windows computer, click Start, and the software automatically begins scanning and recovering lost files within minutes. Compatible with Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, & 11, it's designed to be a reliable first step when accidental deletion occurs.
- Recover photos (JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF), Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access), Open Office files, MP3 music files, PDFs, RTF documents, AutoCAD files, and HTML web pages. Whether it's personal memories or critical business files, the Data Recovery Stick covers the file types that matter most.
- Works with hard drives, USB drives, SD cards, memory sticks, and other common storage formats that use FAT or NTFS file systems — making it a single solution for hard drive recovery, USB drive recovery, SD card recovery, and more. Note: a media reader is required for micro SD cards and some mass storage devices.
- No Installation Required - The Data Recovery Stick runs entirely from the USB drive with no software installation on your computer — helping prevent new data from overwriting the files you're trying to recover. This also makes it ideal for use across multiple computers or in emergency situations where installation isn't practical.
- Use the Data Recovery Stick on as many computers as often as needed — simply clear the recovered data between uses to free up storage space. Software updates keep the tool compatible with newer systems and devices, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.
The most important practical safeguard is to avoid interruption while firmware is being written. Use the procedure for the precise device, allow it to complete, and do not shut down, reset, unplug power, or remove update media during the write process.

- Use the right firmware. Download it only from the exact computer or motherboard manufacturer’s official support page for your model and revision. Never use another model’s file or a generic third-party flashing utility.
- Understand the update route. Vendors may offer a Windows-based process or an in-firmware utility. ASUS documents both Windows updates and EZ Flash for supported systems; Dell documents its own download and installation process. There is no method established as safest across all brands and models.
- Keep power reliable. For a laptop, use the supplied AC adapter and follow any stated battery minimum. Dell says to maintain AC power throughout its update; ASUS’s Windows instructions may specify a battery threshold for some prompts.
- Find the BitLocker recovery key. If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, verify that you can access the key from another device or a secure printed copy before starting. ASUS warns that a firmware update can trigger a BitLocker recovery prompt. Microsoft explains that a BitLocker-enabled device needs its recovery key for most Windows Recovery Environment recovery options in its Windows recovery options guidance.
- Follow encryption instructions for your device. ASUS’s guidance discusses disabling encryption before an update and re-enabling it afterward, but the appropriate steps depend on the product and configuration. Follow the PC maker’s instructions; if the computer is managed by an employer or school, ask its IT administrator.
- Save work and back up important files. ASUS advises backing up data in its EZ Flash guidance. This is prudent preparation; it does not mean that a BIOS update inherently erases user files.
- Use removable media only if required. ASUS EZ Flash instructions describe using a USB drive containing the firmware file on supported products. Check whether your particular system needs one; no universal capacity or USB requirement applies.
ASUS’s EZ Flash instructions are for supported ASUS products, and its Windows update page was last updated September 17, 2026. Follow the instructions for your own product rather than treating either page as a universal procedure.

What if the update causes a problem?
First distinguish a Windows startup or configuration problem from a computer that no longer initializes or reaches firmware startup. Windows Recovery Environment can help with some operating-system startup issues. On an encrypted device, many recovery actions require the BitLocker key. WinRE is not a general method for rewriting or repairing corrupted motherboard firmware.
If the flash fails, the system does not complete POST (power-on self-test), enters a firmware recovery mode, or continues to fail to boot, use the exact manufacturer’s recovery instructions or contact its support. Microsoft’s Secure Boot troubleshooting guidance notes that persistent boot failures may require OEM-specific help. A recovery facility may be available on some products, but recovery is model-dependent and is not guaranteed.

- Compact plug-and-stay design to instantly add storage to your laptop, game console, in-car audio, and more
- Save time with ultra-fast transfer speeds up to 400MB/s (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB 3.0 port required.)
- Transfer a full-length movie to the drive in less than 30 seconds (Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 host device.)
- Get space for your high-resolution photos, videos, and more at a great value with up to 128GB of storage (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Password-protect files using a downloadable software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 10+ and macOS v10.9+ (Software download required, see Password Protection page on SanDisk site).)
Do not assume that clearing CMOS will repair corrupted firmware: resetting configuration settings and rewriting firmware are different operations. Use that step only if the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model call for it. Reinstalling Windows is not a general remedy for a failed firmware flash.
What recovery options may exist?
Recovery features vary by product. Some ASUS motherboard models separately support USB BIOS FlashBack, including certain situations where the computer cannot boot. That does not mean every ASUS board—or every PC from another manufacturer—has a flashback button, recovery image, or dual firmware chip. Confirm the feature and its exact procedure in the manual for your specific model before relying on it.
For Windows-only startup trouble, use Microsoft’s recovery options documentation. For firmware-level trouble, use the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s model-specific guidance. Do not substitute one category of recovery for the other.
