The GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS is a compelling specialist camera if you want a compact, mountable body and are willing to focus manually and choose a compatible Micro Four Thirds lens. It is less convincing as an all-purpose action camera: it is weatherproof, not submersible, and its small screens make precise focus harder. TechRadar reviewer Sam Kieldsen reported strong results with one wide prime, but struggled to focus with a zoom; that experience is a warning to check a specific lens, not proof that all lenses will behave alike.
Is the GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS worth buying?
It can be worth buying for creators who need a small camera that can be mounted in tight positions and want to choose their own field of view or close-focus setup. Its interchangeable mount gives it unusual flexibility for a mountable camera, but that flexibility comes with decisions and compromises: lens compatibility, manual focus, framing affected by crop, weather protection, storage, and the weight and cost of the lens you add.

TechRadar lists a 50MP 1-inch-type CMOS sensor, GP3 processor, Micro Four Thirds mount, JPEG and RAW stills up to 50MP, and 8K recording in two modes: Open Gate up to 30fps and cropped 16:9 8K at up to 60fps. The camera weighs 197g with its battery but without a lens, so the assembled setup’s weight and balance depend on the lens and mount you choose.
The practical case is strongest for controlled close-ups, cinematic shots, and run-and-gun setups where a chosen lens matters more than autofocus convenience. It is a harder fit for casual vlogging or fast action if you rely on autofocus, subject tracking, or horizon lock; the reviewed ILS workflow is built around manual focus.
#1 Best Overall
- Micro Four Thirds Lens Compatibility: MISSION 1 PRO ILS is compatible with a wide variety of manual focus and manual aperture Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lenses,1 giving you the freedom to pair your camera with the ideal lens for any scenario or use an adapter to attach vintage lenses, PL mount cinema lenses or other specialty lenses. Harness shallow depth of field, smooth focus transitions and selective focus for visuals that pull viewers in, guide their attention and tell your story with cinematic flair.
- Compact, Lightweight Design: Made for easier professional rigging, MISSION 1 PRO ILS changes the game for complex shots. Weighing in at only 6.95oz (197g) with a small footprint, it lets you mount a lensed camera in tight spaces, like inside a car, with simpler, smaller rigging. This makes getting professional, cinematic perspectives easier than ever.
- 1” Sensor + Advanced Low-Light Performance: MISSION 1 PRO ILS utilizes a 1” sensor (1.0-type sensor) that captures more light and detail to deliver pro-quality results in a compact camera. Take advantage of the sensor’s 50MP when shooting in 8K, or leverage the Quad Bayer 12MP mode in 4K for even better low-light performance.
- Best-in-Class Video With 8K Open Gate: 8K video delivers breathtaking image quality with 300% more resolution than 4K. MISSION 1 PRO ILS takes it even further with Open Gate capture that uses the full image sensor for maximum height and width for the most post-production flexibility. Paired with an anamorphic lens, Open Gate retains maximum resolution when your footage is desqueezed into a wide aspect ratio.
- What’s Included: MISSION 1 PRO ILS Camera (Body Only), Enduro 2 Battery, Body Cap, USB-C Cable
What the review actually found
Kieldsen reported that a Laowa 7.5mm f/2.0 manual prime worked well for the camera’s intended style. He also reported that he could not get a Panasonic 12–60mm zoom to focus properly. Those are results with two particular lenses in his review, not a universal compatibility ruling or a guarantee of performance with other lenses.
The review’s hands-on observations—including the lens tests, mounted car clip, LUT and DaVinci Resolve workflow, and RAW stills—are Kieldsen’s, not independent testing by this publisher.
What lenses work with the GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS?
The camera has a native Micro Four Thirds lens mount, but mount fit alone does not establish that every MFT lens will focus or operate as expected. Before buying, verify the exact lens against GoPro’s current compatibility information and consider its manual controls, weight, and intended use on a compact, mountable body.

- VERSATILE VIEWING OPTIONS - Utilize the 2.59" OLED Rear Touchscreen and 1.4" Front Status Display for intuitive control and convenient monitoring of your shots in any scenario.
- EXPANSIVE FIELD OF VIEW - Experience an immersive 159° native ultra-wide fixed lens, capturing more of your environment with a dynamic perspective for compelling visual storytelling.
TechRadar’s reviewed examples illustrate why that check matters: the reviewer got useful results with the manual Laowa 7.5mm f/2.0 prime, but could not focus properly with his Panasonic 12–60mm zoom. Do not treat either result as proof that all wide primes work or all zooms fail.
Crop changes the field of view
TechRadar reports a 2.7× crop factor, increasing to 3× when HyperSmooth is used. In the reviewer’s calculation, a 7.5mm lens frames roughly like a 20.5mm-equivalent lens before that stabilization crop, or about 22.5mm equivalent with HyperSmooth. This is a field-of-view comparison, not a change to the lens’s actual focal length. Account for the crop when deciding whether a lens will be wide enough for your shot.
Can I use my Micro Four Thirds lenses on a GoPro?
You can use the Mission 1 Pro ILS’s native MFT mount, but you should not assume that every Micro Four Thirds lens is compatible in practice just because it fits the mount. Confirm the specific lens with GoPro, then make sure its focusing behavior and controls suit a manual-focus camera. The reviewed Panasonic 12–60mm lens did not focus properly for TechRadar’s reviewer, while the reviewed Laowa 7.5mm f/2.0 prime did.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How difficult is manual focus on the Mission 1 Pro ILS?
Manual focus is the central operational trade-off. TechRadar’s reviewer found focus peaking difficult to use on the small rear display and unavailable on the front display. Quik provides a focus-peaking preview, while Mission Monitor was iOS-only at launch; the reviewer did not test that app. He did successfully use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for external live preview, which may be a more workable option when accurate focus matters.
The camera has a 1.4-inch front LCD and a 2.59-inch rear OLED touchscreen. Those compact screens suit a small body, but the review suggests they are not ideal for judging fine focus. For moving subjects or spontaneous action, factor in the extra attention manual focusing requires rather than assuming the lens mount will behave like an autofocus camera.

Is the GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS waterproof?
No: the review describes the ILS as weatherproof, not submersible. It should not be treated as waterproof for underwater use. The fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro is a different model; TechRadar describes that camera as waterproof to 20m without a housing. Do not transfer that rating to the ILS, and check weather-resistance details for the specific lens as well as the camera body.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the ILS compare with the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro?
The choice is between the ILS’s manual-focus lens flexibility and the fixed-lens model’s simpler, more clearly specified underwater use. Neither is automatically the better buy; it depends on whether interchangeable optics matter more to your work than a ready-to-use camera.
| Decision point | Mission 1 Pro ILS | Fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Lens setup | Native Micro Four Thirds mount; lens sold or selected separately. | Fixed lens. |
| Focus | Manual focus; the reviewed workflow has no autofocus. | Autofocus behavior is not stated in the cited comparison. |
| Water use | Weatherproof according to the review; not submersible. | TechRadar describes it as waterproof to 20m without a housing. |
| Price at review publication | $699 launch price reported by TechRadar in 2026; not a current quote. | $599.99, the contemporaneous price TechRadar reported after a reduction; not a current quote. |
| Complete setup | Requires a compatible lens and removable storage; total cost and assembled weight depend on the choices. | Lens is fixed; current package contents and total setup cost are not established here. |
The reported $100 difference is a comparison of the review’s publication-time prices, not a live price check. Compare current camera and lens prices, availability, and included accessories before deciding. The ILS’s cost is not just the body: include an appropriate lens and storage in the budget.

What else should you plan for?
Storage and recording time
TechRadar lists no internal storage and calls for a V30, Class A2 microSD card. An 8K workflow also calls for ample card capacity, especially if you plan longer sessions; the review does not establish a universal capacity recommendation for every recording pattern.
Battery and heat
GoPro-rated battery figures reported by TechRadar are up to 96 minutes for 8K Open Gate at 30fps and up to 74 minutes for 16:9 8K at 60fps. The reviewer found the results broadly matched those ratings, but they are not guaranteed runtime. In his testing, overheating occurred only at the highest listed frame rates.
Quick Recap
Who should choose the ILS?
- Consider it if you want to mount a compact camera in tight spaces, prefer choosing a lens for the shot, and can work with manual focus.
- Check compatibility first if you already own MFT lenses; do not rely on the mount type alone.
- Look at the fixed-lens model instead if you prioritize a simpler setup or the reviewed 20m housing-free waterproofing over lens choice.
- Reconsider the ILS if you need submersion, dependable autofocus, or easy focus judgment from the built-in screens.
