Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReplace your router when it no longer receives security updates, cannot use WPA2 or WPA3 after updating, or persistently fails to meet your home’s speed and coverage needs after basic troubleshooting. Age alone is not a reliable reason to buy a new one: check support for your exact model and rule out an internet-service or placement problem first.
How do I know if I need a new router?
Start with the router’s exact model number, usually printed on its label or shown in its administration page. Then check the manufacturer’s support or end-of-life page for that model and look for recent firmware and security updates. Install any available update before deciding.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre says router security updates are commonly provided for a limited period of three to five years, varying by brand and model. That is not a guaranteed lifespan: an older router may still be supported, while a newer model may have reached end of support. The centre describes routers that no longer receive security updates as end-of-life (Secure your Wi-Fi and router).
- Support has ended: If the manufacturer confirms the model is end-of-life and no longer provides security updates, plan to replace it.
- Security is outdated: Check the available Wi-Fi security options after updating the router.
- Performance or coverage remains poor: Troubleshoot the connection and placement before attributing the problem to the router.
Does the router still support secure Wi-Fi?
Check the router’s security settings for WPA2 or WPA3. The Federal Trade Commission recommends WPA3 or WPA2; it says WPA3 is newer and best, while WPA2 can also protect your information (How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network). If the router offers only WPA or WEP, first check for a software update. If WPA2 or WPA3 remains unavailable, consider replacing it.

WPA3 Personal is Apple’s newest and most secure Wi-Fi protocol. If some older household devices cannot connect to WPA3, WPA2/WPA3 Transitional can allow compatible devices to use the appropriate mode (Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points). Before choosing a replacement, consider which security modes your existing devices support.
Rule out connection problems before replacing it
Slow or unreliable Wi-Fi does not by itself prove the router is failing. A problem affecting one device, a temporary outage, interference, or the internet connection from your provider can all produce similar symptoms. Compare more than one device, and, if practical, compare a wired connection with Wi-Fi. If wired performance is also poor, contact your internet service provider (ISP) before assuming a new router will help.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
If the issue is speed
- Check whether the same slowdown affects multiple devices or only one.
- Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection, if the router and device have Ethernet ports.
- Consider whether the ISP connection or a temporary outage is responsible.
If the issue is coverage
Try placing the router in a more suitable location and check for obstacles or sources of interference. If moving the access point is not practical, a Wi-Fi extender may help; Microsoft discusses extenders as an option when signal coverage is limited (Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows). If dead zones remain, assess whether an extender or a mesh system fits the home layout. Neither is automatically the right answer for every home.

Choose for the home and devices you actually have, not just a Wi-Fi generation label or an advertised peak speed. Verify compatibility with your ISP before purchase; the ISP can tell you whether a model works with its service.

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Security updates and automatic updates | Check the manufacturer’s support information and whether the router can install firmware updates automatically. |
| ISP and device compatibility | Confirm the router works with your internet service and the devices in your home. |
| Security modes | Look for WPA3, or WPA2/WPA3 Transitional if older devices need transitional support. |
| Coverage | Match the solution to your home’s layout and the locations where you need a reliable signal. |
| Ethernet ports | Check whether you need wired connections for computers, TVs, consoles, or other equipment. |
A practical replacement decision
- Find the exact router model number on its label, in its manual, or in its administration page.
- Check the manufacturer’s support page for end-of-life status and recent firmware or security updates; install an available update.
- After updating, check whether WPA2 or WPA3 is available. If only WPA or WEP remains, consider replacing the router.
- If speed is the concern, compare multiple devices and wired versus wireless performance, and check with your ISP if needed.
- If coverage is the concern, try a better router location and check for obstacles or interference. Consider an extender or mesh system only if coverage is still inadequate.
- Before buying, confirm ISP compatibility and compare update support, device compatibility, security modes, coverage, and wired ports.
