They may also score traction, impact, product-market fit, presentation, and Q&A. The exact criteria and their weights vary by event, so the organizer’s current rubric—not a generic checklist—is the best guide to what to emphasize.
The criteria judges commonly assess
Competition rubrics differ, but several judging dimensions recur across events. An organizer may combine them into broader categories or assign each its own score.

Problem, customer, and solution
Judges want to understand who has the problem, why it matters, and how the proposed product or service addresses it. The U.S. Department of Energy’s rubric asks about the market problem, customer need, and value proposition. Novus’s rubric also considers customer research and segmentation, the effectiveness of the solution, and whether credible research supports the pitch. Market, alternatives, and differentiation
Show that you understand the market and the options customers already have—including doing nothing. Explain what makes your approach meaningfully different and why customers would value that difference. Harvard Business School’s 2026 Rock Business Track rubric names market size, the competitive landscape, and differentiation; the University of Vermont’s 2026 rubric includes industry, target customer, and competition. Business model and route to market
A strong pitch explains how the venture expects to earn revenue and reach its intended customers. Depending on the rubric, judges may also assess operating plans, management, and the financial or non-financial resources needed. HBS lists the economic model and go-to-market plan; DOE criteria include market segment, business model, and potential financial needs; UVM includes marketing, operations, management, and resource planning. HBS judging criteria; DOE-wide judging guidelines; UVM competition rubric.
Execution evidence and potential
Distinguish what the team has already built or learned from what it hopes to do next. Novus’s rubric includes an MVP demonstration, key metrics, financial status or projections, and potential to achieve product-market fit. Hult Prize changes some criteria as teams progress: its universal criteria cover team, idea, impact, and business, while product-market fit and go-to-market strategy appear at Nationals, traction at Incubator, and scaling at Finals. Novus competition guide and rubric; Hult Prize selection criteria.
Team capability
Judges may consider whether the team has relevant capabilities, clear roles, commitment, and the ability to work together. HBS includes team capabilities and background. Hult Prize specifically considers commitment, diversity, organization, role clarity, and teamwork. HBS judging criteria; Hult Prize selection criteria.

Some events score delivery separately from the business idea. UVM’s 2026 rubric calls out storytelling, energy, confidence, creativity, verbal and non-verbal communication, and keeping to time. DOE includes presentation quality, while UVM and Novus explicitly assess Q&A. UVM competition rubric; DOE-wide judging guidelines; Novus competition guide and rubric.
How to prepare against the actual rubric
- Get the current rules. Find the event’s judging criteria, category weights, pitch format, and timing before deciding what your pitch should emphasize. Rubrics and formats can change by event and year.
- Match claims to evidence. Use customer research to support the problem, a demonstration or test to support product claims, and label forecasts as projections rather than results.
- Cover the business fundamentals the event asks about. Be ready to explain the customer, value, market, alternatives, revenue model, customer acquisition, team, and funding or resource needs where relevant.
- Separate current facts from plans. A roadmap is not a delivered feature, and a forecast is not evidence that the projected outcome has occurred.
- Rehearse the format and Q&A. Prepare concise answers to likely questions and practice within the event’s time limit. Novus’s 2022 guide, for example, specified a 10-minute pitch followed by 5 minutes of Q&A; that format is specific to that competition and year, not a general rule. Novus competition guide.
Why judging priorities differ by competition
Some events evaluate investment potential; others incorporate a mission, stage, or specific program goals. HBS describes an investment-potential lens for its high-growth, profit-oriented Rock Business Track. Hult Prize includes alignment with at least one UN Sustainable Development Goal and adds criteria as teams advance. DOE’s wide-ranging rubric assigns distinct weights to its criteria. These are different judging approaches, not interchangeable definitions of a good pitch. HBS judging criteria; Hult Prize selection criteria; DOE-wide judging guidelines.
If you are comparing opportunities or checking your pitch against more than one rubric, use the same questions for each event, then apply that event’s published weights:
Rank #3
- Is the customer and problem clearly defined, and does the solution address it?
- Are the market and competitive alternatives understood, with a credible reason to choose this solution?
- Does the business model and route to market make sense?
- Is there evidence of execution, and can the team deliver the next steps?
- Does the pitch fit the event’s stage, impact goals, and presentation requirements?
This is a practical synthesis of common rubric dimensions, not an official universal scorecard. The Pitch Competition Standards Council’s 2026 standard proposes weighted criteria, independent scoring, and criterion-level feedback; it represents that body’s approach, not a rule adopted by every competition. Pitch Competition Standards Council 2026 standard.
Timing is event-specific
Do not infer your speaking time from another competition. Novus’s 2022 guide specified 10 minutes to pitch and 5 minutes for Q&A. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s page, dated July 29, 2019, describes 10-minute pitches with 5-minute Q&A at LBNL events and 20-minute pitches with 10-minute Q&A at DOE-wide events. Those are examples tied to the named events and published materials; check the current organizer instructions for the event you plan to enter.
