How to Change a Chrome Extension’s Site Access Permissions

Change a Chrome extension’s site access on desktop: allow access on selection, limit it to specific sites, or grant access on all sites.

On desktop Chrome, open Extensions → Manage extensions, select Details for the extension, then change its site access under Permissions. You can allow access when you select the extension, limit it to sites you choose, or allow it on all sites.

Change an extension’s site access in Chrome

  1. In Chrome on your computer, select Extensions at the top right.
  2. Select Manage extensions.
  3. Find the extension and select Details.
  4. Under Permissions, change Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit to the access option you want. Google’s instructions cover managing Chrome extensions.

Choose the right access level

Option What it allows Best fit
On select The extension can access the current open tab or window when you select it. If you close that tab or window, you must select the extension again to enable access. Use the extension only on demand.
On specific sites The extension automatically has access on the sites you allow. The extension needs to work on a chosen set of websites.
On all sites The extension can automatically read and change data on all sites covered by its host permissions. The extension needs broad access across websites.

The permission descriptions explain what an extension may be able to access; they do not, by themselves, show that an extension is malicious. Chrome Web Store Help explains permissions requested by apps and extensions.

  1. On the extension’s Details page, set site access to On specific sites.
  2. Under Permissions, add a site beside Allowed sites.
  3. To revoke a site, use the More menu next to it and select Remove.

If Chrome does not show an Add option, first change the setting to On specific sites. See Google’s extension site-access instructions.

Use the quicker Extensions menu

For a faster change, open Extensions, select the extension’s More menu, then point to This can read and change site data. Chrome offers choices for access when you select the extension, access on the current site, or access on all sites. Use the Details page when you need to manage a list of allowed sites.

What this permission does—and does not do

Website access controls whether an extension can read or change data on matching pages. A broader scope may expose page content to the extension, so choose only the access needed and install extensions you trust. This setting does not govern every kind of extension activity: it does not block lower-level network changes made through VPN or proxy settings, as Google notes in its extension management guidance.

If the setting is unavailable

On a work or school computer, an administrator may enforce extension policies, making a setting unavailable or causing it to behave differently. Contact your organization’s administrator. Chrome Enterprise documents policy controls for Chrome apps and extensions on Linux.

These steps apply to Chrome on a computer. The guidance linked here does not establish an equivalent site-access workflow for Chrome on phones or tablets, so do not assume the same menus are available there.
