How to Limit Website Access for Chrome Extensions on Shared or Work Devices

Restrict a Chrome extension to the websites it needs, and understand what additional controls are available on managed work or school devices.

You can limit a Chrome extension’s access to website data by changing its site-access setting to On specific sites and allowing only the sites it needs. On a work or school device, an administrator may also control which extensions can be installed or what permissions they receive. These are separate controls: limiting an extension’s site access does not uninstall or disable it.

Limit an extension to selected websites

In Chrome, open More → Extensions → Manage extensions, select Details for the extension, and find the setting labeled “Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites that you visit.” Choose On specific sites, then add the sites where the extension should be allowed to work or remove sites it no longer needs. Google documents these controls in Chrome Help: Install and manage extensions.

Chrome also offers access options for the current site and for all sites. Use the narrowest option that still lets the extension do its intended job: for example, an extension needed only on one work portal should not need access to every website. Menu wording or placement may vary slightly by Chrome version or language.

What the setting controls—and what it does not

The site-access setting governs the extension’s ability to read or change website data on sites covered by its host permissions. It is distinct from whether the extension is installed or enabled. Changing this permission does not remove the extension, and an administrator may separately control installation or permissions on a managed browser.

There is also an important network-level limit: Google says changing or canceling site-data permissions does not affect lower-level network access changes made through VPN or proxy settings. So this control is not a guarantee that an extension cannot affect network traffic in other ways. See Google’s extension management guidance.

Personal profile settings vs. organization policy

Approach What it controls Who can change it Best suited to
User-managed extension setting Which sites an individual extension can read or change in that Chrome profile The Chrome user, unless an organization has enforced a policy Restricting a particular extension to the sites where it is needed
Organization policy Extension installation, permitted extensions, permissions, and—through separate controls—website access An organization’s Chrome administrator Consistent enforcement across managed users, profiles, or browsers

Google describes administrator controls for allowing or blocking extensions and blocking extensions that request specified permissions. See Allow or block apps and extensions and Set app and extension policies.

What administrators can control on shared or work devices

Administrators can configure extension policies through the Admin console. Depending on the policy and configuration, controls can apply to users, organizational units, groups, or enrolled browsers. Google’s policy setup documentation explains the available extension controls.

Policy scope matters on a shared computer. Google distinguishes platform policies, which can apply to all users of a device, from OS-user and cloud-user policies that apply to a particular user or managed Chrome profile. Whether the browser is enrolled, the device is shared, and the person signs in with a managed account can affect which policy applies. See Understand Chrome policy management.

If a setting is unavailable or cannot be changed on a work or school device, ask the organization’s administrator whether it is enforced. Do not try to bypass a managed policy; the administrator can confirm which account, profile, or device scope governs the browser.

Extension permissions are not the same as website blocking

Restricting an extension determines where that extension can read or change website data. It does not generally prevent the browser user from visiting those sites. For managed Chrome browsers and ChromeOS devices, administrators can separately configure URL allowlists and blocklists. Google characterizes these as basic URL management and recommends considering a content-filtering proxy or extension when stronger filtering is needed. Details are in Allow or block access to websites.
