Replace a Pixel when its regular security updates have ended if you depend on it for sensitive accounts or want ongoing security and operating-system support. That is a sensible planning point, not proof that the phone becomes unsafe or unusable overnight. Check the exact model and its update status first: Google’s support period varies by generation and starts when the phone first became available on the Google Store in the US—not when you bought it.
How long Google supports each Pixel generation
Google’s current support policy gives Pixel 8 and later seven years of operating-system and security updates. Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, and Pixel Fold receive five years. Both periods are measured from the model’s first US Google Store availability.

| Pixel group | Google’s stated update period | Availability examples |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of OS and security updates from first US Google Store availability | Pixel 8: October 2023; Pixel 10: August 2025 |
| Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold group | Five years of OS and security updates from first US Google Store availability | Pixel 6 and 6 Pro: October 2021; Pixel 7 and 7 Pro: October 2022; Pixel Fold: June 2023 |
| Pixel 5a and earlier | Google lists these models as no longer receiving Android version or security updates | Includes Pixel 5a with 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 4a models and earlier generations |
These are Google’s published policy durations, not independently measured outcomes. Google’s availability table gives month and year, and the policy pages do not state an exact final patch date for every model. Don’t treat a month-and-year estimate as a guaranteed expiration day. See Google’s Pixel software update policy and its Pixel availability information.
Find your model and current update level
- Open the Settings app and note the exact Pixel model, Android version and security update level. Google says these details are available in Settings.
- Compare the model with Google’s current list of supported Pixel phones. Nearby generations can have different update periods.
- If your model is still within its published period but appears behind, use Settings to check for updates. Google says rollouts can be gradual, with timing depending on the carrier and device.
Decide whether to replace now or plan ahead
Once regular security updates have ended, weigh the change against your actual needs. The end of support is a reason to plan, especially if you use the phone for banking, email, work or other sensitive accounts; it is not a universal emergency threshold. Google’s policy does not say that every unsupported phone is immediately compromised or unusable.

- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
- How you use the phone: Continued security updates matter more when the device is central to sensitive services.
- Compatibility: Consider whether the apps and carrier services you need still work. The cited policy does not establish a universal app-support cutoff.
- Condition: Battery health, reliability and repair needs may make replacement worthwhile independently of software support.
- Budget: If the phone remains useful, you can plan a replacement around your finances rather than assuming a specific deadline from the policy alone.
Choose a replacement by its remaining support, not just its launch date
For a replacement, check the exact model’s update commitment and first US Google Store availability date so you can understand how much of its stated support period remains. Google’s seven-year policy for Pixel 8 and later is one published option; it does not by itself determine the best choice for every buyer.
Compare that remaining update period with the total cost, device condition and battery health, carrier compatibility, required apps, and whether the newer phone’s features matter to you. Google’s update policy establishes the support terms, but does not compare prices, repair costs or third-party app support.
