Samsung identifies several possible battery consumers, and the right menu paths vary by watch model and software version.
Why is my Galaxy Watch battery draining so fast after an update?
Battery life can be affected by apps, health tracking, display and notification settings, connectivity, temperature, or a hardware problem. Samsung does not publish a universal post-update drain rate or a guaranteed time for battery life to return to normal, so avoid assuming the update is the cause—or waiting for a fixed “settling” period—without checking the watch.

How to stop Galaxy Watch battery drain
1. Update the watch software and apps
Samsung recommends checking for updates because an app may have a battery-consuming bug. For Galaxy Watch3 and newer, Samsung’s phone-based instructions begin in the Galaxy Wearable app: Watch settings > Watch software update > Download and install. The precise labels can differ by model and software version.

Wear OS watches can also check for software updates on the watch. App updates follow a different route depending on the watch: use the Play Store on Wear OS models, or the Galaxy Store update flow on other models. Follow the instructions for your specific watch in Samsung’s watch software and app update guide.
2. Restart if the watch or an app seems stuck
If an app is behaving abnormally or an update appears stuck, restart the watch and check whether the problem continues. A restart is different from a factory reset: Samsung discusses factory reset for serious update failures such as a boot loop, not as a first-line battery-saving step. A reset can erase data, so back up anything you want to keep before attempting destructive troubleshooting.

3. Review background apps and health tracking
Close apps you are not using and review which apps are running in the background. Samsung’s battery guidance also points to sleep tracking, automatic heart-rate measurement, and automatic stress tracking as settings to inspect. Turning off or reducing a feature may save power, but it also means the watch collects that information less often or not at all.

4. Test display, notifications, and connectivity settings
- Always On Display: Turn it off if you can accept that the watch face will not remain continuously visible.
- Notifications: Disable unnecessary alerts, particularly options that wake the screen or automatically show notification details.
- Wi-Fi and mobile service: If the watch is repeatedly seeking Wi-Fi or using a weak network, switch off Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity when you do not need it. Turning off mobile networks disconnects an LTE/3G watch from carrier service.
- Bluetooth: Turning it off disconnects the watch from the paired phone, so do this only if you can work without that connection.
These are reversible checks, not guaranteed fixes. Change one at a time and use the watch normally to see whether its battery behavior changes.
5. Use Power saving or Watch Only mode when needed
Power saving can extend use by reducing brightness and background functions, but it also disables some connectivity and features. Watch Only mode is a more restrictive option for times when you do not need the watch’s smart functions. Treat either mode as a temporary way to conserve power, not a diagnosis of what caused the drain.

6. Check temperature, the watch, and its charger
Samsung warns that very hot or cold conditions can shorten battery life and may damage the watch. Let the device return to a moderate environment before judging its performance. Inspect the watch and charger for physical or liquid damage, and use Samsung-approved chargers and accessories. If the charger appears damaged or is not charging reliably, confirm compatibility with your exact watch model before replacing it; a new charger is not a general remedy for software-related battery drain.
Should you reset your Galaxy Watch after a software update?
Not as an early battery-saving step. Try software and app updates, a restart for abnormal behavior, and reversible settings checks first. Samsung’s reset guidance addresses serious update failures such as a watch caught in a boot loop. Because a factory reset can erase data, back up what you need before using it and follow the reset instructions for your model.

When to run a battery diagnostic or contact Samsung
If the watch is paired with a Samsung phone, run its battery diagnostic in the Samsung Members app. A passing result is useful evidence about battery condition, but it does not prove that every software or settings problem is resolved. If battery life remains abnormal after the checks above, or you suspect physical or liquid damage, contact Samsung support for watch battery troubleshooting or arrange service.
