The simplest way to turn it on is to buy an international roaming pack in the Airtel Thanks app or on Airtel’s IR website, because Airtel says buying a pack enables IR automatically. You can also enable the IR service without a pack, but then everything you use is billed at standard destination-specific rates on your monthly bill. “IR service” and “IR pack” are not the same thing.
Pack or service only: which should you activate?
Airtel’s terms state that IR service “for all customers is ‘disabled’ by default” (Airtel, International Roaming Service & Packs Terms and Conditions, accessed 7 October 2026). You have two routes:

- Buy a pack. IR switches on automatically, and your usage draws on the pack’s allowances.
- Enable the service without a pack. Postpaid customers can do this in the app or through the call centre. Nothing is bundled; usage is charged at standard rates for the country you are in.
To choose, compare destination coverage, trip length, how much data, calling and SMS you expect to use, the pack’s allowances and validity, and how costly standard rates could get. Check the live standard-rate list for your destination first, because those rates vary by country and are not reproduced here. Without knowing your destination and usage, no single pack can honestly be recommended.
Step-by-step: activating IR before you travel
- Open the Airtel app and go to the international roaming section. Airtel directs customers to the app or its IR website to subscribe to a pack.
- eSIM users: Airtel’s eSIM guidance gives the route as App → Manage → buy an International Roaming plan → choose a plan → complete payment. Airtel says pack purchase works the same for eSIM and physical SIM customers.
- Pick a pack for your destination and dates, or choose to enable the service alone if you accept pay-as-you-go rates.
- Pay. IR is enabled automatically once a pack is bought.
- Check your account type. See the restrictions below before assuming your line is eligible.
Can I activate roaming if the app doesn’t work, or from abroad?
- In India, Airtel says you can call 121 or +91 99100 99100.
- From abroad, Airtel advises calling or messaging on WhatsApp at +91 99100 99100.
- If your connection is company-paid, ask your company’s Airtel coordinator to activate a pack.
Doing it before departure is still safer, since an international call or WhatsApp message from a foreign network may itself be costly or unreliable.

When does the pack start?
Airtel lets postpaid customers buy a pack up to 365 days before travel. Validity does not start on purchase. It begins only once you connect to a covered country and make chargeable usage, and it runs on the visited country’s local time. Pack validity is separate from your domestic bill cycle, and the pack is billed in the month it activates. Auto-renewal for postpaid packs is off by default.
Why can’t I activate IR on my postpaid plan?
- Security-deposit plans: Airtel’s postpaid terms say IR on a plan activated with a security deposit becomes available four months after the plan starts.
- Family plans: IR benefits are not shared among connections, so the traveller’s own number needs its own activation or pack.
- Destination not covered: a pack applies only to countries it lists, so confirm coverage for each country on your route.

The ₹698 “Roam-without-Fear” safeguard
If you have IR enabled but no pack, are in a country covered by Airtel’s packs, and use the network, standard rates apply first. When that day’s charges pass ₹698, Airtel automatically applies a ₹698 one-day pack. Per Airtel’s terms it gives:
- 1 GB of data
- 100 minutes of incoming and outgoing calls (India and local)
- 10 outgoing SMS and unlimited incoming SMS
- validity until 11:59 p.m. local time
If these run out, data slows to 80 kbps and extra calls and SMS are charged at discounted rates. The daily charge is billed later, cannot be bought by the customer, and Airtel says the threshold may be revised. This caps a day’s spend; it is not free roaming, and it does not replace checking rates.

Tracking usage while abroad
Airtel’s terms say data usage appears in the app in real time, while voice and SMS usage can lag by up to four hours. Keep that delay in mind when watching your allowances.
