Use Kubernetes Gateway API when you need a standardized way to define how traffic reaches services—especially for shared ingress, richer routing rules, or supported service-mesh traffic. It is not itself an API gateway product: Gateway API is a Kubernetes resource API, while an API gateway is a functional pattern or product that can aggregate APIs and apply centralized controls. Some gateway implementations can be configured through Gateway API; the two terms are not interchangeable. Gateway API’s project introduction describes it as an official Kubernetes project focused on L4 and L7 routing.
What Gateway API provides in a Kubernetes cluster
Gateway API separates the declaration of a traffic entry point from the rules that direct requests. A GatewayClass identifies the controller class responsible for handling gateways; a Gateway declares a gateway instance and its listeners; route resources such as HTTPRoute describe how matching traffic reaches destinations. A controller implementation is required to make those resources work—the API definitions alone do not run a gateway.

This separation can let a platform team manage gateway infrastructure while application teams own route configuration. The specific resources, features, and operational behavior available depend on the controller.
When Gateway API is useful
Expose services at the cluster edge
Use the ingress pattern when clients outside the cluster need a stable entry point to one or more in-cluster services. A Gateway can provide that entry point, while routes describe where traffic goes. This can keep shared gateway infrastructure under platform-team ownership without requiring every application’s routing rules to live in one operator-owned object.

Route by request attributes or shift traffic gradually
Gateway API supports richer rules than basic host-and-path mapping, including header-based matching and weighted traffic routing. Those capabilities can support API-version routing, canary releases, and gradual traffic shifts. Official examples also cover redirects, rewrites, and traffic splitting. Feature availability and behavior are implementation-specific, so verify the selected controller’s support before designing around a rule.
Expose services using multiple protocols
The project’s getting-started material includes HTTP, TCP, and gRPC examples, and its status information lists protocol-specific route kinds. This makes Gateway API relevant when a cluster exposes services beyond ordinary HTTP. Check the maturity and controller support for the particular route kind you need; project-level availability does not mean every controller implements it.

Share gateway infrastructure across teams
Multiple independently managed routes can attach to shared gateway infrastructure, including across namespaces when the relevant attachment controls allow it. This can reduce duplicated edge infrastructure while preserving application-team ownership of routes. Establish who controls gateways, which namespaces may attach routes, and how attachment permissions are granted.

For service-mesh use cases supported through GAMMA, routes can attach directly to Kubernetes Services rather than to Gateway resources. This differs from ingress, where routes attach to a Gateway. It can align route policy with the service and its owning application team. GAMMA’s service-mesh work has been in Gateway API’s Standard Channel since v1.1.0; the behavior available in a deployment still depends on its mesh implementation.

Move beyond Ingress limitations
Gateway API is worth evaluating when existing Ingress configuration depends on implementation-specific annotations, or when teams need richer routing and clearer separation of platform and application responsibilities. Migration requires converting existing Ingress resources. Inventory each rule and annotation, identify a standard Gateway API equivalent or an implementation-specific extension, and test routing, TLS, status reporting, policy behavior, and rollback before production cutover.

- Required behavior: List the needed route kinds, header matching, traffic weighting, rewrites, redirects, TLS, cross-namespace attachment, and policy extensions.
- Implementation support: Check conformance reports, supported route kinds and versions, cloud integration, and documented caveats for the specific controller.
- Migration effort: Identify annotations and features that must be converted, replaced, or retained in a vendor-specific API.
- Operations: Account for controller lifecycle, observability, security-policy attachment, and how teams will diagnose routing behavior.
Check controller support and current API status
Gateway API is a portable specification, not a guarantee of identical features across controllers. Install a controller that implements the resources you plan to use; installing the custom resource definitions alone does not provide a functioning gateway. Review the project’s implementation and conformance information and the chosen implementation’s own caveats.
As of the Gateway API project status information consulted on October 7, 2026, v1.6.1 was the latest supported project version. The project lists GA-level support for v1 GatewayClass, Gateway, ListenerSet, HTTPRoute, GRPCRoute, TLSRoute, TCPRoute, UDPRoute, BackendTLSPolicy, and ReferenceGrant. This is project-level API status, not evidence that every controller supports every resource or feature. Check the project documentation and your controller’s support details for the version you deploy.

- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Plan a migration from Ingress
- Inventory current behavior. Record every Ingress rule, TLS configuration, annotation, and implementation-specific feature in use.
- Map requirements to resources. Identify the matching Gateway API resources and features, or note where an implementation-specific extension is required.
- Verify implementation support. Confirm the selected controller supports the route kinds, policies, and cross-namespace behavior your design requires.
- Test before cutover. Validate routing, TLS, status reporting, policy behavior, and rollback in the target implementation.
- Convert and transition deliberately. Convert the Ingress resources and cut traffic over only after the new configuration behaves as intended.
Kubernetes’ Gateway API documentation explains the resource model and notes that migration involves converting existing Ingress resources. Use it alongside the chosen controller’s documentation, since implementation details can change the practical mapping.
