During setup, a Wi-Fi extender connects to your router’s existing Wi-Fi network. After setup, your phone, laptop, and other devices connect to the extender’s network—or to a shared network name if the equipment supports it. Place the extender where it can still receive a usable signal from the router, generally between the router and the weak-coverage area.
Which network should you connect to?
There are two connections to distinguish: the extender uses the router as its upstream Wi-Fi source, while your devices use the extender’s extended network. The extender may broadcast a separate network name (SSID), or compatible equipment may let it use the router’s name. TP-Link’s RE205/RE305 guide describes the extender-to-router connection; NETGEAR explains shared SSIDs.

How to connect and set up an extender
- Start the extender’s setup using the model’s app or web instructions. If both the extender and router support WPS, you may be able to use that method instead.
- When prompted, choose your router’s Wi-Fi network and enter its password. Follow the instructions for your exact model and firmware; setup screens and features differ.
- After setup, connect a phone or computer to the extender’s network if it has a separate name. If the extender uses a shared name, your device may connect under the familiar router network name.
See the TP-Link setup and troubleshooting guide, the RE205/RE305 setup chapter, or NETGEAR’s setup guide for model-specific steps.

Should the extender have the same Wi-Fi name as the router?
A separate extender name makes it easier to tell which access point a device is using, but you may have to select the extender network yourself. A shared name keeps the network label familiar, but it does not guarantee that every device will switch to the nearest access point. NETGEAR notes that some devices may stay connected to the router even when the extender signal is stronger. ASUS explains that its separate suffix is intended to distinguish access points and help avoid some roaming problems; see its SSID guidance.

Choose the naming option supported by your equipment and your preference. Do not assume roaming will be seamless unless the documentation for the specific router and extender says it is supported.
Where to place the extender
For normal use, place the extender roughly halfway between the router and the weak-coverage area, while keeping it within range of the router. It needs a usable signal to extend; placing it in the dead zone itself may leave it with too little signal to relay.

If the extender cannot find or connect to the router during initial setup, TP-Link advises temporarily moving it closer—preferably within 16 feet. That is manufacturer troubleshooting guidance, not a universal placement standard. If the extender’s signal indication is poor after setup, move it closer to the router. See the TP-Link troubleshooting guidance and user guide.

When an extender is the right fix—and when it is not
A range extender can be a reasonable choice when the router works well nearby but one area has weak Wi-Fi. If the connection is poor even beside the router, an extender will not fix the underlying internet service or router problem; diagnose that connection first.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
For larger homes or more demanding coverage needs, compare a mesh Wi-Fi system. The right choice depends on whether the problem is one localized dead zone or broad coverage, whether the extender can receive a usable router signal where it will sit, and the equipment’s supported bands, security, SSID behavior, and compatibility. NETGEAR’s setup guidance describes mesh as a possible fit for larger or more demanding homes and offices.

Do not assume every extender will work with every router. TP-Link says its extenders work with almost any router, but may not work with routers or gateways using altered, non-standard, or outdated firmware.
