To stop Insider Preview builds on a Windows 11 PC, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Stop Insider Preview Builds and choose the option shown for that device. Microsoft says this can return devices on Beta, Experimental, and Release Preview to a retail build. If the PC is on Experimental (Future Platforms), leaving the channel requires a clean installation instead.
Check your Windows build and Insider channel first
The available way to leave depends on the build and channel installed on the PC. Check the Windows version and build in Settings > System > About, or type winver in Windows Search and open the result. Then check the channel at Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. Microsoft’s guidance on Insider builds explains the channel differences: Deeper look at running Windows Insider Preview Builds.

Stop preview builds on this PC
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
- Select Stop Insider Preview Builds.
- Choose the option currently offered for the device and follow the on-screen instructions. Microsoft says this option can move devices on Beta, Experimental, and Release Preview back to a retail build. Labels and timing can vary by build. See Microsoft’s Windows Insider troubleshooting guidance.
What to do if the device is on Experimental (Future Platforms)
Microsoft says a PC on Experimental (Future Platforms) cannot leave through the usual stop-builds option. The development build does not align with a retail Windows build, so leaving the channel requires a clean installation. Back up important files before reinstalling. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance and channel overview describe this limitation.

Device unenrollment is different from leaving the Insider Program
Stopping preview builds is a device-level action. Leaving or unregistering from the Windows Insider Program is a separate account-level action, used if you also want to stop program emails and remove your account registration. Unregistering alone does not stop preview builds on a PC; unenroll each device you want to take off preview builds. Microsoft explains both actions in its Windows Insider troubleshooting guidance.

Why Reset this PC does not reset an Insider build to retail
Reset this PC reinstalls the Windows build already on the device; it does not automatically convert an Insider build to a retail build. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page states: “Use Reset this PC to reset your device. This will reinstall Windows on the same build that you’re currently on.” For recovery to the original operating system, Microsoft Support describes using an appropriate Windows recovery image after backing up information you want to keep: Join the Windows Insider Program and manage Insider settings.
When rollback may be available
Microsoft says rollback to the previous build may be available for up to 10 days after installing an update, or until the next build is taken. This is a rollback window, not a guarantee that every device can return to retail Windows that way. Availability depends on the installed build and channel; if rollback is unavailable, another update or a clean installation may be needed. Back up important files before rolling back or reinstalling. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.

If Windows is managed by your organization
On a work-managed device, a non-administrator may not be able to stop enrollment. The organization may need to leave the program or change its device settings. Contact your IT administrator if the option is unavailable or controlled by your organization; Microsoft describes this case in its Windows Insider troubleshooting guidance.
