Reimage or reinstall a computer when a serious operating-system problem persists after narrower repairs, when suspected malware continues after a security scan, or when you intentionally want a clean start. A slow computer by itself is not enough reason: first check for an update-related problem, try suitable repair options, and consider whether hardware could be at fault. The right choice depends on the cause, how long it has persisted, what you can safely erase, and how much setup you are prepared to repeat.
What does “reimage” mean?
People often use reimage to mean any fresh installation, but the available options have different effects. Before starting, identify exactly which operation you are choosing:

- Repair reinstall: Reinstalls Windows while retaining files, apps, and settings where the available repair option supports that. Microsoft describes this as a less disruptive Windows recovery choice in relevant cases. Microsoft: Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.
- Reset that keeps personal files: Windows keeps personal files but removes apps and settings. It is not the same as a repair reinstall.
- Reset that removes everything: Windows removes personal files, apps, and settings from the selected Windows installation.
- Clean install from installation media: Installs Windows from external media. A clean install removes Windows, personal files, apps, and settings from the selected drive.
- macOS reinstall: Reinstalling macOS from Recovery ordinarily does not remove apps or personal data. Erasing the startup disk is a separate, destructive step.
For Windows, Microsoft lists options such as troubleshooters, uninstalling an update, System Restore, and—where available—a repair reinstall before Reset this PC. It describes Reset as “This option is most disruptive.” See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

A serious Windows problem remains after focused repairs
If Windows remains unstable or a software problem persists after a relevant troubleshooter, update removal, System Restore, or an available repair reinstall, a reset may be reasonable. Choose the least disruptive option likely to solve the problem: a reset that keeps files still removes apps and settings, while “Remove everything” also removes personal files. Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance explains the choices.

Suspected malware continues after a scan
Microsoft advises running a Windows Security scan first. If the problem continues, it recommends reinstalling Windows from installation media and choosing the clean-install option. This removes the contents of the selected drive and can help remove malware from the Windows installation, but a reinstall is not a guarantee against every possible threat. Keep backups clean and avoid restoring suspicious programs. Follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance.
You deliberately want a clean start
A clean start can make sense when you want to remove accumulated apps and settings or prepare a device for a new owner. If you are selling or giving it away, choose an erase or removal path rather than a keep-files reinstall. Microsoft notes that the consumer “Clean data” option is not a government or industry erasure standard; consult Microsoft’s reset instructions for its scope.

macOS displays a flashing question-mark folder
A flashing question mark means the Mac’s startup disk is unavailable or does not contain a working macOS. Start with Apple’s startup-disk guidance and macOS Recovery; reinstall macOS if the question mark returns. If Disk Utility cannot repair disk errors, the issue may require a different response than reinstalling alone. See Apple’s guidance for a Mac that starts up to a question mark and Apple’s macOS reinstall instructions.
When is reimaging not the first move?
Match the recovery step to the symptom instead of treating every slowdown as an operating-system failure.

| Situation | Try first | Consider reinstalling or resetting when | Important consequence |

| A recent update triggered the issue | Try uninstalling that update or another relevant recovery option. | The issue persists after appropriate, less disruptive repairs. | Microsoft lists update removal among options that do not affect personal files or apps. Source. |
| General Windows instability or software trouble | Run a suitable troubleshooter; consider available repair or restore options. | Those options have not solved the problem. | Reset may remove apps and settings, or personal files too, depending on the option. Source. |
| Suspected malware | Run a Windows Security scan. | The problem continues; Microsoft recommends a clean install from installation media. | A clean install removes contents from the selected drive. Preserve clean backups and avoid restoring suspicious programs. Source. |

Reinstalling software cannot repair failing storage or other physical defects. If a clean reinstall does not resolve the problem, investigate hardware and device-specific causes rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
What should you check before starting?
- Back up important files. Check that the backup opens from another device or location. Microsoft says to back up important files before resetting.
- Retrieve the BitLocker recovery key. If the Windows device is encrypted, have the key available before entering recovery.
- Make a rebuild list. Record installed apps, license or sign-in details, Wi-Fi credentials, and any device-specific drivers you may need after a clean install.
- Confirm the installation source and target. If creating Windows installation media on a USB drive, use another working PC as Microsoft directs. In a clean install, verify the selected drive carefully: its contents will be removed.
- Plan for power and uninterrupted recovery. Keep the device connected to power where platform instructions require it. A Windows reset can show a black screen for an extended period; Microsoft warns that manually restarting during this process can cause it to fail.

Which Windows reinstall source should you choose?
For Reset this PC, Windows offers Cloud download and Local reinstall. Cloud download fetches a fresh copy and may help when local system files are corrupted or missing. Local reinstall uses files already on the PC and can be faster if the internet connection is slow, but it may not include the latest updates. Follow the current Microsoft reset guidance for the available options.

OEM recovery media can include device-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Windows installation media may not contain. Consider that difference if the computer depends on manufacturer-provided components or software.

How do Windows and Mac recovery differ?
On Windows, reset choices make a direct distinction between keeping personal files and removing everything; even the keep-files reset removes apps and settings. A repair reinstall, where available, is a separate and less disruptive option. On Mac, Apple says reinstalling macOS from Recovery does not remove apps or personal data, though it recommends backing up first. Erasing the startup disk is a distinct action, not an automatic part of an ordinary reinstall. Recovery behavior and available macOS versions depend on the Mac model; use Apple’s current model-specific reinstall guidance.
What should you do after reinstalling?
- Install operating-system updates.
- Reinstall only applications you trust, using their legitimate sources.
- Restore personal data selectively rather than bringing back programs or files you suspect caused the problem.
- If symptoms persist after a clean install, check hardware and device-specific causes instead of repeating the same reinstall.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s current reset documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Before reinstalling an older Windows release, verify current support and whether your hardware is eligible for an upgrade. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC page.
