If Word replaces the characters immediately to the right of your cursor as you type, it is likely in Overtype mode. Turn it off in Word for Windows under File > Options > Advanced by clearing both overtype checkboxes.
Why does Word delete text as you type?
In Overtype mode, new characters replace existing text to the right of the cursor instead of being inserted before it. Microsoft identifies this as the cause when text at the insertion point disappears as you type. See Microsoft’s explanation of typing over text in Word for Windows.

The Insert key can control Overtype when the relevant setting is enabled. Pressing it may therefore switch the mode on or off, depending on your settings.

How to turn off Overtype in Word for Windows
- In Word, select File > Options > Advanced.
- Under Editing options, clear Use overtype mode.
- Clear Use the Insert key to control overtype mode as well. This prevents the Insert key from toggling Overtype through that setting.
- Return to your document and type near existing text. The new characters should be inserted without replacing the text to the right.
Microsoft’s recommended fix is to clear both checkboxes. The documented steps apply to Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024 for Windows: Text disappears as I type.

What if the problem does not look like Overtype?
Only characters to the right of the cursor are replaced
That pattern fits Overtype. Check the two Editing options above first.
A whole page or large section disappears
That is different from replacing characters next to the cursor, so Overtype may not explain it. A Microsoft Q&A response suggests checking whether the issue occurs in other documents and considering whether text is hidden. Treat these as diagnostic leads, not confirmed causes; the response is community support dated February 25, 2021: When typing in Word, the text suddenly disappears.

Does this fix apply to Word for Mac or Word for the web?
The cited Microsoft instructions cover Word for Windows. They do not establish the equivalent steps for Word on Mac or Word for the web, so the Windows menu path should not be assumed to match those versions.
