To save Firefox bookmarks, open Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks, then choose Import and Backup > Backup… in the Library. To restore that file later, choose Import and Backup > Restore. Be aware: Restore replaces the bookmarks currently in Firefox. If you want to add bookmarks without replacing the current set, import an HTML file instead.

Back up bookmarks manually in Firefox desktop
- Open Firefox’s menu, select Bookmarks, then Manage bookmarks to open the Library.
- In the Library sidebar, select All Bookmarks if it is not already selected.
- Choose Import and Backup > Backup….
- Pick a memorable location and save the dated backup file. Keep the file extension intact. If the backup needs to survive loss of the computer, keep another copy somewhere separate, such as optional transfer media.
The Library’s Backup… command creates a Firefox backup file, JSON by default. Firefox also creates automatic bookmark backups and retains the last 15, according to Mozilla Support. A manual copy gives you a recovery point you control instead of relying only on the automatic set.

Restore bookmarks from a saved backup
- Open Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks.
- In the Library, select Import and Backup > Restore.
- Choose a dated automatic backup, or select Choose File… to find a manual backup you saved.
- Confirm the restore only if you are ready to replace the current Firefox bookmark set with the contents of that backup.
If Firefox cannot restore a file, Mozilla advises trying another supported format, HTML or JSON. The key distinction is that Restore returns Firefox to the selected bookmark set; it does not combine that set with your current bookmarks.

Merge bookmarks instead of replacing them
When the goal is to keep the current bookmarks and add another collection, use Import Bookmarks from HTML in the Library’s Import and Backup menu. First export the other collection as an HTML file if needed, then import that file. Mozilla identifies HTML import as the route for combining bookmarks; choosing Restore instead overwrites the current set.

Transfer bookmarks to a different computer or browser
Move a Firefox backup to another computer
Copy the saved backup file to the destination computer, using transfer media such as a flash drive if convenient. On that computer, open Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks > Import and Backup > Restore > Choose File… and select the copy. This restores the saved set and replaces the destination’s current Firefox bookmarks. Mozilla describes this file-transfer approach in its transfer instructions.
Move bookmarks to another browser
In Firefox’s Library, choose Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML… and save the HTML file. Import that file using the destination browser’s bookmark-import feature. Mozilla distinguishes this portable HTML export from Firefox’s dated backup file; see Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file.

Use Firefox Sync for ongoing access
Sync is useful when you want bookmarks to stay updated across your Firefox devices. It is not a substitute for a separately saved recovery file: Mozilla states that Sync “continuously updates itself as you change bookmarks, so it does not provide a true backup service, nor is it intended to be used as one.”
What the broader Firefox Backup feature covers
Mozilla also documents a newer Firefox Backup feature for broader profile data, including bookmarks, settings, history, passwords, payment methods, and extensions. Its availability is platform- and release-dependent: Mozilla’s current article describes backup creation on Windows 10 and restore on Windows 10/11, with wider support rolling out, including Linux from Firefox 151 and macOS from Firefox 154. Check Mozilla’s Firefox browsing-data backup guidance for the current platform details. For a standalone bookmark recovery point, the Library’s manual bookmark backup remains the direct workflow.
