Kong: Survivor Instinct is set shortly after Godzilla vs. Kong. That is the official timeline placement given in the game’s Steam listing and Nintendo’s publisher-provided description. The game’s story is described as canon to the Monsterverse, but the available official descriptions do not give it an exact in-universe year or name the city where it happens.
Where the game fits in the timeline
The confirmed placement is relative: Kong: Survivor Instinct takes place shortly after Godzilla vs. Kong. The Steam listing states that timing, and Nintendo’s Switch listing repeats it. Neither description specifies a calendar year or a more precise interval.

That makes “shortly after Godzilla vs. Kong” the most accurate answer to when the game happens. Exact dates or a named setting sometimes offered in fan timelines are not established by these official descriptions.

Yes: the game is presented as an official Monsterverse story, and 7Levels co-founder Krzysztof Król described it as canon in an interview with Toho Kingdom. Król said the developers worked with Legendary to keep the game consistent with released material and projects in development. Co-founder Paweł Biela also said the team worked with Legendary’s creative team and could not contradict established canon.

Those are statements from the developers, not a separate direct interview with Legendary. They support treating the game as an official, coordinated part of the Monsterverse, while its specific confirmed placement remains the one stated in the store descriptions.
What happens in the game
The story follows David, an oil-rig worker searching for his daughter Stacy after a Titan attack devastates a city. Rather than centering Monarch investigators or the Titans themselves, the game uses a civilian rescue mission to show the human consequences of a monster-scale event.

As David moves through damaged districts, he encounters other survivors, scavenges supplies and faces both human and monster threats. The store descriptions name Kong, Abaddon, other superspecies, mercenaries called the Hyenas, and Monarch-inspired ORCA Σ technology. Alan Jonah leads the Hyenas.
What the game does—and does not—establish about Godzilla
Godzilla’s absence from the game’s conflict should not be filled in with a guessed explanation. Asked why Godzilla does not appear to fight Kong, Abaddon and Tiamat, Biela said the developers had an internal explanation but would not disclose it because a future Monsterverse project might address the gap. He added that only what is actually in the game can be considered canon.

The game also introduces new Titans. Biela said the monsters debuting in Kong: Survivor Instinct are officially part of the Monsterverse. That confirms their status as Monsterverse creatures; it does not establish whether or when they will appear in later stories.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, as noted in the Associated Press’s coverage of the film. Since Kong: Survivor Instinct is set shortly after Godzilla vs. Kong, readers may infer that its events fall in the period after that film. But the game’s official descriptions do not explicitly place it before, during or after The New Empire; a more exact ordering is not confirmed.
