Neither laptop is the better choice for everyone. Choose the MacBook Air M5 if your essential apps and peripherals work reliably with macOS; choose a Surface Laptop for Business if your work depends on Windows or your organization is built around Windows deployment and support. Then compare the exact processor, size, memory, storage, ports, and local price—because “Surface Laptop” includes distinct configurations.
Start with the software and your workplace
A laptop’s advertised specifications cannot tell you whether it will run your specific work. Before comparing hardware, check that every essential application, plug-in, device driver, and peripheral supports the laptop’s operating system and processor architecture. This is especially important if you are considering a Snapdragon Surface: confirm support for that exact Windows-on-Arm configuration with the software or hardware vendor.

For an organization, also account for the people who will enroll, secure, update, and support the device. Windows-standardized fleets may benefit from keeping a Windows deployment workflow; a Microsoft-centered workplace can still manage Macs, but should verify its macOS policies, apps, enrollment process, and support capacity.
When Surface fits more naturally
Surface Laptop for Business is the more direct fit when required software or peripherals need Windows, or when the organization already uses Windows identity and endpoint-management processes. Microsoft’s Windows Autopilot requirements describe dependencies including supported Windows, Microsoft Entra ID, an MDM service such as Intune, and applicable licensing. Review those requirements alongside the organization’s current setup.

When MacBook Air remains viable in a Microsoft environment
Choosing Microsoft tools does not automatically require Windows hardware. Microsoft documents macOS enrollment, compliance and security configuration, remote actions, and app deployment in its Intune macOS deployment guide. Corporate-owned Mac enrollment through Automated Device Enrollment involves Apple Business or Apple School Manager and setup requirements such as an Apple MDM push certificate and Apple token; see Microsoft’s macOS enrollment guide. Confirm that your organization’s policies and support model cover the Mac workflow you plan to use.

Apple reports video streaming and wireless web use, while Microsoft reports local video playback and active web usage. The test descriptions and configurations differ, so the listed maximums do not establish that one laptop lasts longer in the same real-world workload. If battery runtime will decide the purchase, look for independent testing of the exact models under comparable conditions.

Choose the right configuration and desk setup
Match memory, storage, and screen size to the work
Compare like with like. A 13-inch Air and a 15-inch Intel Surface differ in screen size and configuration; a 13-inch Snapdragon Surface is not the same product as the Intel Surface. Decide how much memory and local storage your applications and files require, and compare configurations that meet those needs rather than treating entry-level and upgraded models as equivalent.
The Air’s 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch displays offer two size choices. Surface business options include a 13-inch Snapdragon touchscreen and 13.8-inch or 15-inch Intel models. Consider portability against the extra workspace of a larger screen, especially if you regularly work without an external monitor.

Check ports before buying accessories
The Air provides two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports and MagSafe charging. The cited 13-inch Snapdragon Surface specifications list USB-C and USB-A, while the Intel models list Thunderbolt 4/USB4. Microsoft’s Snapdragon technical page identifies USB-C/USB 3.2 ports. Verify the exact machine’s port count, display support, and dock compatibility before ordering an adapter or dock; port names alone do not guarantee that a particular multi-display setup will work.
Compare price and support in your market
There is no substantiated price winner here: current street prices depend on market, date, and configuration. Compare the same storage and memory level in your region, and include warranty and business-support terms. A lower-priced base model is not a like-for-like value comparison if it lacks the memory, storage, or ports your work requires.
