You do not need a Magento developer for every catalog update or routine admin task. Hire one when a requirement calls for custom storefront behavior, an integration, extension work, an upgrade or migration, performance investigation, or ongoing care of customized code. The right scope depends on your edition, installed version, architecture, connected systems, and in-house technical capacity. Adobe now uses the name Adobe Commerce for its commerce platform; Magento Open Source remains a separate edition.
When is a Magento developer worth hiring?
A developer is most useful when the work reaches beyond configuration you can safely manage through the admin or an existing supported extension. Adobe’s Commerce developer documentation covers customization, storefront development, extensions, integrations, testing, performance, and operations.

- A feature or storefront change: You need behavior or a customer experience that your current configuration and extensions do not provide reliably.
- An integration: The store must exchange data or coordinate processes with another system, and the connection needs to respect your version, data rules, and business workflow.
- An upgrade or migration: Custom modules, extensions, and dependencies need compatibility checks and changes, making the work more involved than simply changing a version.
- A measured performance or operational issue: You need someone to investigate a defined problem or carry out a specific operational task. A developer can help diagnose and address it, but no particular speed or sales improvement is assured without store-specific evidence.
- Maintenance of customized code: Your store needs testing, patches, dependency updates, or security review for code and integrations that your team cannot adequately maintain.
If your needs are limited to routine product, category, or order administration that your team can perform safely, specialist development may not be necessary.

Custom features and extensions
A developer can assess whether a requirement fits existing configuration or a supported extension, or whether it calls for custom code. That assessment matters because customizations may need ongoing testing and updates as the platform changes.

APIs and connected systems
Adobe Commerce supports REST and GraphQL APIs and documents events, webhooks, and other integration patterns. A developer can design and implement a connection, then test that it behaves correctly with the store’s version and business rules. The scope should identify which systems exchange which data, what triggers the exchange, and how errors are handled.
Upgrades and migrations
Adobe’s software lifecycle policy explains support status and upgrade or migration paths. Adobe warns that using unsupported versions can expose stores to security vulnerabilities, compliance issues, and loss of support. Before upgrading, have the developer review custom code, extensions, and dependencies for compatibility rather than treating the change as a routine version switch.

Performance and operational troubleshooting
Adobe documents performance practices and operational playbooks. A useful engagement begins with a specific symptom or task—for example, investigating a reported slowdown or reviewing a defined operational process—rather than a promise of a particular outcome. Agree on how the issue will be assessed and what evidence will count as resolution.
Which extension approach fits the work?
For new apps and modernization, Adobe recommends starting with App Management and the out-of-process model where it fits the requirement. Its extensibility guidance distinguishes that approach from extensions running inside the Commerce application; the two models are not interchangeable.
Rank #3
| Approach | How it works | Trade-off to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| In-process extension | PHP modules, plugins, and observers run within the Commerce application and can provide deep, synchronous control. | Custom code is coupled to the Commerce version, runtime, internal APIs, deployment process, and application resources. |
| Out-of-process app | Connects through supported APIs, events, webhooks, and extension points; it can be developed and operated independently of the Commerce release cycle. | It does not provide the same kind of in-app runtime control. Whether it fits depends on the business requirement and technical environment. |
Ask the developer to explain why the proposed model suits the specific feature, integration, or modernization goal, and what its upgrade and operational implications will be.
Does Adobe Commerce on cloud remove the need for merchant-side development?
No. Cloud hosting does not automatically transfer responsibility for customized code and integrations. Adobe’s shared responsibility security and operational model assigns merchants responsibility for secure custom code and third-party integrations, supported dependencies and services, testing custom applications, incident response, and patches to customized solutions and extensions.
“The merchant is responsible for following security best practices for their customized instance of the Adobe Commerce on cloud infrastructure solution.” — Adobe, Shared Responsibility Security and Operational Model

A developer can provide expertise and perform agreed work, but hiring one does not by itself transfer your business’s accountability for security and maintenance. Adobe’s separate security enforcement notice covers Adobe Commerce on Cloud versions 2.4.4 through 2.4.9. Confirm that your deployment and version fall within its stated scope before relying on its specific requirements or deadlines.

How should you define the job before contacting candidates?
Write down enough detail for candidates to assess the work and explain their approach. At minimum, record:
- Whether the store is Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce, and its exact installed version.
- The business problem and the behavior you want after the work is complete.
- The relevant extensions, custom modules, storefront approach, and external systems.
- Whether the engagement is for a feature, integration, incident, upgrade, migration, performance investigation, or ongoing maintenance.
- The testing, deployment, security review, documentation, and post-launch support you expect.
- Who will own patching, dependency updates, monitoring, and future compatibility after delivery.
Turn the desired outcome into acceptance criteria—for example, which workflow must work and how it will be tested—rather than relying on a broad request to “improve” the store.
What should you look for in a developer or agency?
Evaluate candidates against the work you actually need. Useful questions include:
- Have they worked with your edition, version, storefront approach, and relevant architecture?
- Can they describe a similar extension or integration and the trade-offs involved?
- How will they test the work, deploy it, and reduce risk to the live store?
- How will they address security, dependency support, patches, and compatibility after launch?
- What documentation and handover will your team receive?
- What assumptions, exclusions, and post-launch support are included in the proposed scope?
Adobe identifies an experienced partner and developer network for commerce strategy, implementation, and long-term maintenance on its Adobe Commerce product page. That service category can be one route to specialist help, but it does not establish comparative results, pricing, or suitability for your specific project.
Should you hire a freelancer, an agency, or in-house?
A specialist developer or agency can suit a bounded project or occasional need for expertise. An in-house developer may be a better organizational fit when platform work is sustained and the business can support the role. The choice is a staffing decision, not a guaranteed cost or performance advantage; compare candidates on relevant experience, continuity, maintenance coverage, and the scope you need.
