There is no universal token count at which a local GPU becomes cheaper. It depends on your actual workload, the cost of keeping the complete local system running, and whether that system can serve a model with comparable quality, speed, and capacity. For bursty or uncertain demand, hosted services can be easier to price; a well-used local system may win when demand is steady and its monthly costs are spread across enough work.
Start with a fair comparison
Cost only answers the question if both options can do substantially the same job. Compare a specific hosted model and pricing plan with a specific local model and serving setup. Record the model names, the date and region of each price, and any differences in quality, speed, context limits, or availability.

Then describe your workload in terms the options can actually serve:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Monthly input and output tokens, kept separate if a service bills them at different rates.
- Requests per month, average and peak concurrency, and when demand arrives. A monthly token total alone hides bursts and idle periods.
- Required response time, availability, and the largest model or context your use case needs.
- Any data-handling or deployment requirements that rule out one option or add operating costs.
Check that the local GPU has enough memory for the chosen model and serving configuration, and measure or otherwise verify its throughput at your target load. A lower-cost card that cannot fit the model or meet the required capacity is not an equivalent alternative.

Calculate the monthly cost on each side
Hosted APIs billed by tokens
For a service that charges separately for input and output, calculate:
hosted monthly cost = (input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate per million) + (output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate per million) + other billed charges
Use the rates for the actual model and account conditions you expect, and include minimums or other billable components where applicable. Do not apply an input rate to output tokens or assume that one provider’s model price represents the market.
Hosted GPUs billed by time
For a rented GPU or dedicated instance, multiply its full billed rate by the hours you expect to pay for. An always-on deployment can incur charges while idle; a service billed only while running may behave differently. Include the rest of the machine when it is billed separately, and check billing granularity, minimums, commitments, region, and interruption terms.

A GPU-hour price is not interchangeable with a per-token API rate: the rental option requires you to operate a serving stack and translate your workload into GPU time, including idle time and capacity needed for peaks.
Local system
Count the cost of the whole system, not just the graphics card. A useful monthly accounting is:
- Fixed or ownership costs: purchase price spread across the useful life you assume, financing if material, and expected replacement or resale value.
- Running costs: electricity for the GPU and supporting components, cooling, networking, and any space or colocation.
- Supporting hardware and operations: CPU, RAM, storage, power supply, maintenance, warranty, and staff or engineering time.
Separate costs that continue when the machine is idle from costs that rise with use. This distinction matters: an owned GPU incurs capital and support costs whether it processes requests or sits unused.

For a simplified comparison, express both alternatives using the same unit of work, such as a million tokens with a specified input/output mix. Let F be local fixed monthly cost, H hosted marginal cost per unit, and L local marginal cost per unit. If local marginal cost is lower than hosted marginal cost, the simplified break-even workload is:

break-even units per month = F ÷ (H − L)
Below that volume, hosted is cheaper under these assumptions; above it, local is cheaper. If H − L is zero or negative, this simplified model has no positive break-even volume: local variable costs are not lower, so increasing use alone does not recover its fixed costs.
For token-priced APIs, calculate H using the actual input/output mix. If local usage has meaningful electricity or other per-use costs, include them in L; do not treat local marginal cost as zero by default. If workload peaks require extra machines or paid capacity, model that capacity rather than applying a single average rate to every month.
Illustration using one published scenario
The OECD’s 2026 report models a hosted API scenario using Gemini 3.1 Flash at about USD 2 per million input tokens and USD 12 per million output tokens, with a 40:60 input/output mix. At that mix, the weighted rate is about USD 8 per million total tokens. That is the report’s scenario, not a general current quote or a claim of equal capability between a hosted model and a local one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe same report assumes, for its H100 scenario, about USD 300 per month in electricity, approximately USD 1,200 per H100 GPU per month for colocation, and depreciation of 2% of original capital value per month. Within those assumptions, electricity plus colocation alone total about USD 1,500 monthly, before depreciation, other system costs, or any local per-use costs. This demonstrates why a token threshold cannot be inferred from the API rate alone: the local fixed-cost total and marginal cost, as well as equivalent service quality, still have to be established. The figures are scenario assumptions, not a tariff or estimate for every location or home system. OECD report

Use current prices carefully
The following examples were checked on October 7, 2026, but are not directly comparable: some are token rates, some are GPU-hour rates, and machine configurations differ. Recheck the linked provider page for the model, region, configuration, and billing terms you would actually use.
| Option | Published example | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Inference | Lists hosted model prices by input and output token, and dedicated GPU-hour pricing including H100 at USD 4.41/hour and H200 at USD 4.47/hour. | The page’s rates are provider- and page-specific, not a market average or a guarantee of account or location availability. Confirm current prices and whether the chosen service is token-billed or GPU-hour billed. Pricing page |
| Google Cloud GPU pricing | Lists a T4 at USD 0.35 per GPU-hour on demand, USD 0.22 with a one-year commitment, and USD 0.16 with a three-year commitment on the page inspected. | Prices vary by region, and Spot rates vary. The page says attached GPUs add to VM cost except on accelerator-optimized machine families whose prices include GPUs; verify the complete configuration and VM cost. GPU pricing |
| Hugging Face Inference Endpoints | Lists hourly endpoint GPU-instance prices; actual cost is calculated by the minute. | Check the current provider, instance, memory, availability, and endpoint configuration. Pricing documentation |
| Lenovo Press report examples | Its cloud-price table gives GCP g4-standard-96 at USD 14.97/hour on demand and AWS p6-b200.48xlarge at USD 114.27/hour on demand. | These are different full configurations, not GPU-only rates or a direct provider ranking. The report says it uses publicly available official prices at the time of writing. Report |
For Google Cloud in particular, do not mistake a GPU line item for the whole server price. Its pricing information distinguishes attached GPUs from accelerator-optimized machine families, where GPU costs are included in the machine-family price. In either case, identify which CPU, RAM, storage, and other components your quoted rate covers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for utilization, peaks, and power
Utilization is the bridge between the spreadsheet and the real decision. If an owned GPU is busy only occasionally, its purchase and support costs are distributed over relatively little work. A service billed by runtime may avoid some idle GPU charges if it can be stopped, but you still need to account for startup, availability, and peak capacity requirements. Verify the specific service’s lifecycle and billing rules.
Power and supporting infrastructure can materially change the local total. In its 2026 report scenario, the OECD assumes one H100 uses about 700 W at full capacity, with up to an additional 700 W for RAM, CPU, and cooling. It assumes European electricity at about USD 0.25/kWh and a PUE of 1.3, producing an estimated electricity cost of about USD 300 per month per H100 in that scenario. These assumptions are not a general home-GPU estimate or a current electricity tariff for every reader. OECD report

Decide on more than the lowest dollar total
Before committing, compare each viable option at both expected average use and peak demand. A cost advantage is not proof of equivalent quality or operational fit. Include:
- Model capability, memory fit, and throughput at your actual concurrency.
- Latency and availability, including any time needed to start or recover rented capacity.
- Data-handling policy and the level of deployment control you need.
- Staff time for serving, monitoring, upgrades, failures, and security.
- For cloud: region, full attached-machine cost, billing granularity, commitment terms, and Spot interruption risk.
- For local hardware: power draw, cooling and noise, warranty, useful life, expandability, and resale value.
Choose hosted services when their flexibility and operating model suit your variable or bursty demand, or when your comparable local system would be lightly used. Consider buying or colocating GPUs when your workload is sustained enough for the complete local system to be productive and the model meets your requirements. Use the calculation to narrow the choice, then validate the capacity and operational requirements before treating a lower spreadsheet total as a real saving.
