As of October 5, 2026, WhatsApp lists Android 6.0 and newer and iOS 15.1 and newer as supported; it says support for iOS 15.5 and newer will begin November 30, 2026. Requirements can change, so check WhatsApp’s current supported operating systems against your phone’s version and model.
What WhatsApp’s warning means
WhatsApp says it notifies users in the app and sends several reminders before it stops supporting an operating system. A warning is therefore a prompt to check compatibility and update if possible; it does not, by itself, establish that your account has been immediately blocked or give you an individual cutoff date.

WhatsApp reviews its supported operating systems as devices and software change, and says it updates its requirements page regularly. The thresholds below reflect the Help Center listing checked October 5, 2026. Your own phone’s eligibility depends on its model and the updates available for it.
| Platform | WhatsApp requirement listed October 5, 2026 | Upcoming change |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Android 6.0 or newer | No change stated in the cited Help Center listing |
| iPhone | iOS 15.1 or newer | Starting November 30, 2026, WhatsApp says iOS 15.5 or newer will be supported |
These are WhatsApp’s stated minimums, not a guarantee that every phone can install the required version. Check the live compatibility page before acting, especially around the announced iOS change.

Check your phone’s operating system
iPhone
Open Settings > General > About and look for the iOS version. Compare it with WhatsApp’s current iPhone requirement.
Android
Open Settings and look in the system or About phone area for the Android version. The menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and model, so use your phone maker’s instructions if you cannot find it. Then compare the version with WhatsApp’s Android minimum.

Install an update if your phone offers one
Update iPhone
- Back up your iPhone before installing an iOS update.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available, tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen prompts. Apple says Software Update shows updates compatible with that iPhone, so availability depends on the model. See Apple’s instructions for downloading iOS 26.
Update Android
Use the system-update control in your phone’s Settings, but follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model: Android update menus and eligibility differ across makers and devices. WhatsApp’s minimum version does not tell you whether a particular handset can receive an update.
If your phone cannot update to a supported version
First confirm the model’s update eligibility with its manufacturer and recheck WhatsApp’s live requirements. If the phone cannot install an operating system version WhatsApp supports, replacing it may be necessary to continue using WhatsApp on a primary phone. Treat that as a fallback after checking for updates, not as the first response to a warning.

When comparing a replacement, verify that the specific model and regional version can run an OS that meets WhatsApp’s current minimum, and check its remaining manufacturer update eligibility. Also make sure it can receive SMS or calls for account verification and consider how you will move or restore your chat history.
Protect account access and chat history
WhatsApp says the phone used to verify an account must be able to receive SMS or calls. A Wi-Fi-only device cannot be used to set up a new account. Before changing phones, make sure you can receive verification messages or calls on the number you use.

Chat restoration depends on having a backup. WhatsApp’s download page says a backup may be restored if one exists. Google notes that backup and restore behavior varies by Android version and app, so do not assume every chat or app setting will transfer automatically. See Google’s Android backup guidance.
Can WhatsApp Web work around an unsupported phone?
Do not rely on WhatsApp Web or another linked device as a way to register an account without a supported primary phone. WhatsApp documents desktop, web, and some tablets as devices that can be linked, but says the primary phone is needed to register the account and link new devices. The linked-device feature does not establish that another device can replace an unsupported phone for registration.
