For a new standard Blu-ray and DVD player in the US, the Sony BDP-S1700 is a defensible low-cost pick: Sony lists it at $74.99. It plays standard Blu-ray and DVD discs in Full HD, but not 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Its streaming connection is wired Ethernet, not Wi-Fi.
First, check which kind of Blu-ray disc you own
Standard Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray are different formats. A regular Blu-ray player handles standard Blu-ray and DVD discs; it cannot play a UHD Blu-ray disc. A UHD-capable player can also play standard Blu-rays, so if you already own UHD discs—or expect to buy them—compare 4K players instead of choosing by the lowest standard-player price.

Sony explicitly says the BDP-S1700 plays movies in Full HD 1080p rather than 4K. It is therefore a sensible budget option only if standard Blu-ray and DVD playback meet your needs.
Why the Sony BDP-S1700 is a reasonable cheap standard player
Sony’s US direct product page lists the BDP-S1700 for $74.99. That is the manufacturer’s listed US price, not a guarantee that it is the cheapest offer at every retailer or on every day; sales, used listings, and prices outside the US may differ.
#1 Best Overall
- Premium 4K Ultra HD Blu Ray Player for a Spectacular Home Theater Experience: Enjoy your library of special-edition Blu Ray, rare DVDs, or streamed content in true cinematic style with immersive video and audio
- Stunning Color and Detail: Exclusive Panasonic Hollywood Cinema Experience (HCX) tech is applied to 4K high-precision chroma processing for natural textures and depth, maximizing color, clarity, and detail; supports HDR10 format UHD Blu-ray discs, HDR10+TM metadata
- Studio Master Sound with Enhanced Clarity: Designed for high-resolution audio as it was meant to be heard; connect to your audio system via twin HDMI for Hi-Res studio master sound
- Compatible with Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log-Gamma: Combines with Panasonic's original high-quality image technologies for even more precise image expression
- 4K Networking: reproduce 4K videos in MP4 and you can output JPEG data in 4K resolution, to share photos from a camnera or camcorder
- Disc playback: standard Blu-ray and DVD, with Blu-ray playback up to Full HD 1080p.
- DVD upscaling: it can upscale DVD playback; this does not turn a DVD into a 4K disc or native 4K video.
- Other media: USB media playback is supported.
- Streaming connection: network streaming uses wired Ethernet. The player has no built-in Wi-Fi.
- Display connection: make sure your TV or receiver has an available HDMI input.
Those limits matter more than a small price difference if you need wireless streaming or UHD disc playback. If streaming apps are important, you can use a separate streaming device; it is not required to play discs.
If you need 4K UHD discs, compare entry-level UHD players
Two alternatives covered by current buying guides are the Panasonic DP-UB150 family and Sony UBP-X700. They are options to investigate, not proven cheaper substitutes for the BDP-S1700: the relevant prices and features differ by model suffix, retailer, and region.

| Player | Disc format | Notable connectivity and HDR details | Price evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony BDP-S1700 | Standard Blu-ray and DVD; not 4K UHD Blu-ray | Wired Ethernet for streaming; no built-in Wi-Fi | $74.99 listed on Sony’s US product page; manufacturer price, not a universal lowest price |
| Panasonic DP-UB150 family | 4K UHD Blu-ray, plus standard Blu-ray playback | TechRadar says DP-UB150/154 variants lack Wi-Fi and Dolby Vision; Panasonic’s US DP-UB150-K page lists HDR10 and high-resolution audio features | What Hi-Fi? showed $299.99 for the DP-UB150EB at several US retailers when its guide was accessed in 2026; a dated snapshot, not a live quote |
| Sony UBP-X700 | 4K UHD Blu-ray, plus standard Blu-ray playback | TechRadar describes Wi-Fi and Dolby Vision support, but no HDR10+; Dolby Vision may require manual setting changes depending on the disc | Not established by the cited guide as cheaper than the BDP-S1700 |
Do not assume every regional suffix in a player family has identical specifications. Confirm the exact model number and feature list before buying, particularly if you need Wi-Fi, Dolby Vision, or HDR10+.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to choose without overpaying
- Match the player to your discs. For standard Blu-ray and DVD, a regular player is enough. For UHD Blu-ray discs, select a UHD-capable model.
- Compare the delivered price in your region. Check the exact model, whether it is new or used, shipping, and current retailer price; a manufacturer listing or dated guide price is not a live market-wide comparison.
- Decide whether the player needs to stream. The BDP-S1700 requires Ethernet for network streaming. If you cannot run a cable, use another streaming device or consider a player with Wi-Fi.
- For UHD models, check the HDR formats you care about. The lower-cost Panasonic and Sony options make different HDR trade-offs, so check the exact model’s specifications against your TV and disc collection.
- Check your setup. Confirm there is an available HDMI input, and ensure your router connection or separate streaming device is ready if you plan to use apps.
Price and reliability: what the figures do—and don’t—tell you
Sony’s $74.99 listing is a US manufacturer price, while What Hi-Fi?’s $299.99 figure for the Panasonic DP-UB150EB was a 2026 guide snapshot across named retailers. Neither establishes the absolute cheapest current offer. The cited buying guide also did not provide market-wide reliability statistics or failure rates, so price alone should not be treated as evidence of long-term reliability.
