October 4, 2026, marks the tenth anniversary of that announcement—and a useful moment to look at how Google’s phone line has changed from an original two-model launch into a broader family of devices.
Why Google introduced Pixel
In its 2016 announcement, Google presented Pixel as a new way to bring its software and hardware design together. The company called it the first phone “made by Google inside and out,” distinguishing it from the Nexus program, through which Google had worked with mobile handset partners since 2010. That was Google’s description of its product direction; it does not mean Google made every component itself.

Brian Rakowski, then Google’s VP of Product Management, wrote: “We’re excited that the lineup features the first phone made by Google inside and out—Pixel.” Google’s October 4, 2016 announcement framed the phone as a close union of Google services, Android and device design.
What the original Pixel offered
The launch was a pair: the 5-inch Pixel and 5.5-inch Pixel XL. Both had a glass-and-aluminum design, with a distinctive glass panel on the back. Google listed Very Silver and Quite Black, plus Really Blue as a limited-edition color available only in the United States.

- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
- Google Assistant: Assistant was built into the phone, making Google’s conversational helper a prominent part of the product pitch.
- Camera: Google highlighted a 12.3-megapixel rear camera and computational-photography features. Its announcement cited a DxOMark Mobile score of 89 for the Pixel camera. That was a launch-era score reported by Google in 2016, not a current ranking.
- Software: The phones launched with Android 7.1 Nougat. Google emphasized direct software and security updates.
- Google Photos: Google promised Pixel owners unlimited storage for photos and videos at original quality. Those were historical launch terms, not a statement of what Google Photos offers today.
These details show what Google chose to emphasize at launch; they are not a present-day assessment of the phones or their services. The announcement also listed matching cases for the original models.
How Pixel changed over ten years
The clearest contrast is not a single specification: it is the expansion from two sizes into multiple kinds of phones, alongside successive design and software milestones. Google’s own retrospective describes that evolution. The comparison below is about the company’s published account, not an independent performance test.

| Dimension | Original Pixel, 2016 | Later line, as Google describes it |
|---|---|---|
| Device range | Pixel and Pixel XL, in 5-inch and 5.5-inch sizes. | Regular and XL models, A-series phones, Pro models and foldables across later generations. |
| Design landmarks | Glass-and-aluminum body with a contrasting glass panel. | Google identifies Pixel 6’s Camera Bar as a notable design shift. |
| Camera and software features | Computational photography was part of the original camera pitch. | Google’s retrospective names features including Night Sight, Top Shot, Astrophotography, Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur. |
| Assistant and processing | Google Assistant was built in; the phone launched with Android 7.1 Nougat. | Google says Tensor arrived with Pixel 6 and enabled AI capabilities and real-time translation features. |
| Product positioning | A flagship pair presented as Google’s closer integration of hardware and software. | Google says Pixel 6 brought the first Pro model, while later generations expanded the range of form factors and tiers. |
Google’s 2025 retrospective also points to Car Crash Detection among the features associated with the line. It describes Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 as adding further features, but the list of examples is not a neutral, generation-by-generation comparison. The milestones are best read as Google’s account of what it chose to highlight, not proof that every later phone is better in every respect.

The Pixel name now covers more than the original small-and-large flagship pairing. In its 2025 look back, Google describes regular, XL, A-series, Pro and foldable devices as part of the line’s development. In 2026, Google’s Made by Google announcement provides current portfolio context. It is an announcement, not a live inventory, pricing or availability page.
That wider range changes the meaning of “Pixel” as a product line. The 2016 announcement centered on two closely related phones; the subsequent family has included different price tiers and form factors. The available company history establishes that expansion, but does not provide a basis here for ranking devices or measuring their sales and market share.

Ten years is a clear milestone for Google’s hardware story: Pixel began as a two-phone announcement and developed into a broader family, with Google identifying Pixel 6, Tensor and the Camera Bar as turning points. The company’s retrospective also traces camera and software features that became associated with later devices.

The source material for this history is Google’s own launch announcement and retrospective. They establish what Google announced and how it describes the line; they do not independently establish Pixel’s cultural influence, public popularity, current market position or why people continue to discuss it. The anniversary supports a look back at the product’s evolution, not a measured claim about the size or reasons for present-day conversation. Google’s 2025 account of ten Pixel generations is the company’s own summary of that journey.
