OBS Studio 28.0, released September 1, 2022, introduced HDR and 10-bit encoding, native Apple Silicon builds, and a move from Qt 5 to Qt 6. It also added production and accessibility features. OBS 28 is now a historical release, not the current version: OBS’s official download page listed 32.2.2 on October 3, 2026. If you are installing OBS today, use that page to find the current build; if you need version 28, check your operating system and essential plugins first.
What changed in OBS Studio 28?
OBS 28 combined a substantial technical update with workflow improvements. The biggest changes affect people building HDR or 10-bit workflows, using Apple Silicon Macs, or relying on plugins that interact with OBS’s interface.

HDR and 10-bit encoding
OBS 28 added HDR and 10-bit encoding support, but these capabilities depend on the encoder, hardware, color settings, and streaming destination. The OBS 28.0 release notes specify AV1 or HEVC for HDR and 10-bit encoding. For HDR, OBS recommended the P010 color format and Rec. 2100 PQ color space. For 10-bit HEVC, OBS 28’s notes specified NVIDIA 10-series, AMD 5000-series, or newer GPUs. Intel QuickSync and Apple VT were not supported for that particular 10-bit HEVC case in the 28.0 notes. These are version-specific requirements, not a statement about later OBS releases or every encoder path.

There were also HDR workflow limits in version 28. Some filters were unavailable when a source rendered in HDR: Apply LUT, Chroma Key, Color Key, Image Mask/Blend, Luma Key, and Sharpness. Mac and Linux HDR support was limited, HDR preview did not work there, and several inputs and encoders still needed updates. A supported video capture device could be used for HDR capture, but that is a workflow-specific option, not a general requirement for OBS.
Native Apple Silicon builds
OBS 28 added native builds for Apple Silicon Macs, so OBS could run without x86 emulation. Plugin support was a potential obstacle: the 28.0 notes warned that some third-party plugins might not yet be available in native Apple Silicon versions. If an essential plugin lacked a native build, the x86 OBS build was an alternative to consider. OBS 28.0 release notes

Qt 6 and operating-system compatibility
OBS moved from Qt 5 to Qt 6 in version 28. The change brought a newer interface toolkit, but it also dropped support for Windows 7 and 8, macOS 10.13 and 10.14, Ubuntu 18.04, and 32-bit operating systems. Plugins dependent on Qt 5 components could also require updates. The release notes cautioned: “Some plugins may not be compatible with OBS 28.” OBS 28.0 release notes
Other production and accessibility additions
- Windows application-specific audio capture for a single process.
- Integrated obs-websocket 5.0 as a first-party plugin.
- Automatic recording splits by duration or file size.
- Native SRT and RIST outputs.
- A separate video mix for the virtual camera.
- In-app YouTube chat messages and an accessibility section in Settings.
- A refreshed AMD encoder implementation on Windows.
- ScreenCaptureKit support on macOS 12.5 and later, and direct audio capture on macOS 13 and later.
- NVIDIA Background Removal and an updated Yami default theme.
Should you install OBS 28?
For a new installation, OBS 28 is generally not the right starting point: it is an older major release, while the official download page listed OBS Studio 32.2.2 on October 3, 2026. A deliberate version 28 installation can still make sense when you need to reproduce an older setup or have a specific compatibility reason. Before upgrading an existing production machine, verify the OS, architecture, and every plugin or integration your workflow depends on.
Compatibility checks before upgrading
- Check the operating system. OBS 28’s Qt 6 transition excludes Windows 7 and 8, macOS 10.13 and 10.14, Ubuntu 18.04, and 32-bit systems. Confirm that the intended build supports your actual OS.
- Inventory essential plugins and integrations. Record their names and versions, then check each developer’s current compatibility notes for your operating system and architecture.
- Use the OBS compatibility page as a starting point. Its platform-specific matrix covers Windows, Intel macOS, and Apple Silicon macOS, but it is dated August 31, 2022, and says it is not exhaustive. - On Apple Silicon, confirm plugin architecture. Check whether each required plugin has a native Apple Silicon build. If not, decide whether using the x86 OBS build is practical for your workflow.
- For HDR, validate the complete signal path. Confirm the encoder and GPU support the intended format, configure the recommended color settings, and check that the destination supports the workflow. In OBS 28, HDR streaming was limited to YouTube HLS with HEVC.
How to update or install OBS safely
The precise update route depends on your operating system and how OBS was installed. The official sources establish the download page and its previous-release links, but not one universal in-app updater sequence for every platform or package source.

- Select your platform’s build if you want the current OBS release. The page listed version 32.2.2 when checked on October 3, 2026; verify the current listing before downloading.
- If you specifically need OBS 28, follow the previous-releases link from the official download page and choose the appropriate version and platform build. Do not assume the newest installer is version 28.
- Before replacing a working installation, check plugin and OS compatibility using the checks above. For a production setup, avoid changing versions until critical plugins and integrations are confirmed.
- Install the chosen build using the platform’s provided package or installer. The exact process varies by OS and installation channel; follow the instructions for that build rather than relying on a single menu path that may not apply to your setup.
