Before going live, make sure you have permission to rebroadcast and archive every episode.
Before you set up the stream
Confirm YouTube live access
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Check rights to every episode
Being able to listen to a podcast, access its RSS feed, or use it for language study does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. You need the rights for live transmission and any resulting archive, including applicable music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; it may replace matched content with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even licensed content can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and obtain explicit permission from the relevant rights holder when required.
YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

Choose the right OBS source for your playlist
| OBS source | Best for | Loop behavior | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC Video source | A playlist of multiple local episode files | Enable Loop Playlist to restart from the first file after the last one | VLC must be installed on the computer running OBS |
| Media Source | Repeating one local media file | Enable its Loop property to restart that file | No multi-file playlist behavior is described for this source |
For a sequence of podcast episodes, the VLC Video source is the direct fit. The source behavior and VLC dependency are documented by the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
Set up the continuous playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. Install both on the computer that will run the encoder. The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed.
- Organize your episode files. Put the recordings you have permission to use in a folder, and decide their intended sequence. Check that each file plays and that its audio is audible before adding it.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the OBS Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Create a new source, then add the episode files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist. In the source properties, turn on Loop Playlist. This makes the list start again after its final episode; it does not keep a powered-off computer or failed connection online.
- Check the scene and audio. Confirm the VLC source is visible in the preview and that the audio meter responds during playback. Make sure no other scene element obscures the video and that the episode audio is not muted.
If you only need to repeat one recording rather than cycle through episodes, add an OBS Media Source instead and enable its Loop property.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. YouTube’s live-stream settings also include scheduling and controls such as auto-start, auto-stop, and DVR; scheduling by itself does not create a repeating playlist.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In the stream setup, copy the ingest URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if offered, and enter or connect the stream key as prompted. If using a custom server field, use the stream URL supplied by Live Control Room. Do not share the key publicly.
- Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. In OBS, start streaming. Wait for the incoming feed in Live Control Room, then check the picture, episode order, and audio before starting the public broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection and stream workflow.
- Start the broadcast from YouTube when ready. Once the preview and sound are correct, start the live event in Live Control Room if it has not been set to start automatically. Keep OBS open and monitor the stream while it runs.
What “continuous” does and does not mean
Loop Playlist repeats the episode list when playback reaches its end. It does not provide automatic recovery from a computer shutdown, OBS crash, home internet outage, power loss, or YouTube ingest interruption. For a do-it-yourself setup, the computer must remain powered on with OBS running and a working network connection. Test a full playlist cycle if practical, and check the stream periodically; YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality in its live-streaming tips.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how a longer continuous event will be archived or divided, so do not rely on a particular archive outcome for a broadcast exceeding 12 hours. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshooting
- You cannot start a YouTube live stream: Check that the channel is verified, has no live restriction in the previous 90 days, and has completed first-time activation. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The playlist will not load in OBS: Confirm VLC is installed on the computer running OBS, then reopen the VLC Video source properties and check that the files still exist at their listed locations.
- Episodes play once and stop: Open the VLC Video source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single file, use Media Source’s Loop setting instead.
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Check that OBS is streaming, the stream URL and key match the current YouTube event, and Live Control Room is open to the correct stream.
- There is no sound or the wrong episode is playing: Listen to the Live Control Room preview, check OBS audio meters and mute states, and verify the playlist order and source visibility.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Review the notice in YouTube Studio. Confirm you have live and archive rights; if the content is licensed, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted through Content ID.
- The stream stops when you leave: A local OBS setup depends on the computer, OBS process, power, and network remaining available. The playlist loop cannot repair a failure of those components.
