Your router’s USB port may let you share files, serve media, connect a printer, or add a cellular backup—but only if that exact router model and its firmware support the feature. Some compatible modem routers also use USB storage for voicemail. Check your router’s model, hardware version, region, and firmware before plugging in a device or planning around any of these uses.
What can a USB port on a router do?
A USB port is an interface, not a promise of a particular feature. Depending on the router, it may support one or more of the uses below. TP-Link’s support documentation describes USB storage sharing and, on supported modem routers, connecting a 3G/4G modem; those capabilities are specific to compatible devices, not universal router functions. 1. Share files with devices on your home network
Some routers can make files on a connected USB flash drive or hard drive available to computers on the local network. Depending on the router, access may use a file-sharing protocol such as Samba (SMB) or FTP, and setup may involve a router app or administration page. STRONG, for example, describes FTP and Samba sharing on a specific router; this is not evidence that other routers offer the same options. STRONG support: Why is there a USB Port on the rear side of the router?
Router-attached storage can be convenient for sharing files, but it is not automatically a backup. Keep another copy of important files on a separate drive or backup service.

2. Serve music, photos, and video to compatible devices
A router with a media-server feature can index supported files on a USB drive and make them available to compatible players on the home network. ASUS documents a Media Server setup through its Servers Center feature. Both the router and the playback device must support the relevant server protocol and media formats; this is not a universal streaming service, and storage sharing alone does not mean a router has media-server capability. 3. Share a USB printer
Some routers provide a way to make a USB printer available to multiple networked devices. STRONG lists printer sharing for its specific router, but a USB socket by itself does not mean the router can act as a print server. Confirm that the exact model supports printer service and that the computers or other clients can use its setup method. STRONG support: Why is there a USB Port on the rear side of the router?
4. Add a cellular internet connection
On some compatible modem routers, a supported USB 3G/4G modem can provide internet access when the usual connection is unavailable. TP-Link’s documentation describes this for certain devices; compatibility depends on the router, modem, carrier, SIM, and service in your area. Check all of those before buying a modem or relying on it as a backup. TP-Link Service Provider: How to use USB port on TP-Link ISP-customized devices

For one model-specific example of cellular modem setup, TP-Link’s TL-WR902AC V3 guide covers that function in standard wireless router mode. The guide does not make it a feature of every router with USB. TP-Link TL-WR902AC V3 User Guide
5. Store voicemail on certain VoIP modem routers
TP-Link describes USB storage for voicemail on certain VoIP DSL modem routers. This is a narrow, model-dependent use, not a standard feature of home routers. Check the device’s manual or product support page to see whether it applies to your model. TP-Link: How to use USB port on TP-Link Modem Router
How to check whether your router supports a feature
- Identify the exact device. Find the model and hardware revision on the router label or in its administration interface. Note your region and firmware version, since supported features can differ.
- Check the model-specific documentation. Look for the function by name—such as storage sharing, media server, printer service, USB modem, or voicemail storage—rather than assuming the port supports every USB use.
- Check the connected device requirements. For storage, verify supported file systems, maximum capacity, partition limits, and power needs. For media or printers, confirm client compatibility. For cellular service, verify modem, carrier, SIM, and local network support.
- Confirm how access works. Find out whether sharing is limited to the local network or can be exposed over the internet, and whether you can set user credentials and folder permissions.
- Test the feature before depending on it. Connect the device, enable the relevant service in the router interface, and confirm it works from an intended client. Use the router’s safe-removal control before disconnecting storage.
Storage compatibility, access, and safety
Drive requirements vary by router family. For a listed group of TP-Link modem routers, the manufacturer identifies FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT hard-drive formats and a 4 TB limit per partition. That figure applies to that product group only; it is not a general limit for router USB storage. TP-Link: How to use USB port on TP-Link Modem Router

ASUS advises checking the compatibility information for the specific router, including supported format and maximum size, and updating firmware if necessary. If the router does not detect the drive, use its model-specific troubleshooting guidance. Formatting a drive erases its data, so do not format it until you have copied anything important elsewhere. ASUS: How to set up Servers Center – Media Server
Some drives need their own power supply; TP-Link’s ISP-customized router guidance says to connect external power when the drive requires it. Eject storage through the router’s safe-removal control before unplugging it to reduce the risk of data damage. Review who can access shared files
Sharing settings matter as much as drive compatibility. On the TP-Link ISP-customized devices covered by its access guide, all clients can access all folders by default. Review the permissions on your own router and set credentials or narrower folder access where available. Do not enable remote FTP access casually: making a service reachable from outside your home network changes who may be able to reach it. | What you want to do | What to verify | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Share files | Router storage-sharing feature; drive format, capacity, power, and folder permissions | File sharing is not the same as a separate backup. |
| Play stored media | Router media-server support; compatible player and file formats | A media server is distinct from basic storage sharing. |
| Share a printer | Router printer-service support; compatible client setup | USB printer support is model-specific. |
| Use cellular internet | Router and modem compatibility; carrier, SIM, and local service | A USB modem will not work with every router or network. |
| Store voicemail | Voicemail-storage support on the exact VoIP modem-router model | This is a niche feature on certain devices. |
The official guidance cited here does not establish comparable speed figures across router models, so there is no sound basis for ranking these functions by throughput. Start with the task you need, then check the exact router and connected-device requirements.
