Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo find free Wi-Fi nearby, check official websites for libraries, local government, transit systems, airports, and businesses, then confirm the venue’s access rules and exact network name before connecting. Availability, hours, sign-in requirements, and whether a purchase is needed vary by location, so verify details directly before you make a trip.
Where to look for free Wi-Fi
Start with places that publish their own visitor information:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Public libraries: Check the library’s website for Wi-Fi access, opening hours, and any visitor or account requirements.
- City and county facilities: Local government websites may list connectivity at public buildings or outdoor spaces.
- Transit operators and airports: Look on official websites for passenger Wi-Fi instructions and terms.
- Cafes, hotels, shopping centers, and other venues: Search the venue’s official site for “Wi-Fi” or “guest Wi-Fi,” or ask staff when you arrive.
The Federal Trade Commission lists coffee shops, malls, airports, hotels, and other public places as common settings for public Wi-Fi, but its guidance is not a live directory of hotspots: FTC guidance on public Wi-Fi. In the United States, the FCC National Broadband Map shows fixed and mobile broadband service availability; it does not locate free public Wi-Fi hotspots: FCC National Broadband Map.
Check whether access is actually free
A network described as “guest Wi-Fi” may still come with conditions. Before relying on it, check the venue’s posted terms or ask staff whether you need a password, browser sign-in, registration, or acceptance of terms—and whether a purchase is required. Check opening hours and any time limits as well. There is no single access model that applies to every venue, and policies can change.

Use only the access method the venue provides. Avoid entering personal information that is not necessary for sign-in, and do not try to bypass the venue’s conditions.
Verify the network before connecting
Ask an employee or check the venue’s official information for the exact Wi-Fi network name. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency recommends confirming the network name in public places such as airports, hotels, and cafes: CISA guidance on wireless networks. A name that resembles the venue’s name is not proof that the venue operates it.

Use public Wi-Fi more safely
The FTC’s consumer guidance, dated February 13, 2023, says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because website encryption is widespread. Check for HTTPS or a lock symbol in your browser’s address bar, and use secure websites throughout your session where available. Keep your device and browser updated: FTC guidance on public Wi-Fi.
A free connection—or a password-protected one—is not by itself a guarantee that a network or sign-in page is trustworthy. An older FTC video transcript says, “The bottom line? SecureWi-Fi hotspots require a password. Secure websites start with https.” That transcript’s password statement should not be treated as a universal test; the FTC’s newer consumer guidance emphasizes website encryption instead: FTC video transcript.

When a VPN or personal hotspot makes sense
VPN: an optional tool, not a guarantee
A VPN app routes device traffic through servers controlled by its provider; some VPNs encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server. That does not make every VPN the same, encrypt every kind of traffic, or make you anonymous. Before choosing one, research the provider, review the app’s permissions, and check whether it shares data with third parties, as the FTC advises: FTC guidance on VPNs and public Wi-Fi.

Personal hotspot: a possible paid fallback
CISA says using your own wireless hotspot is generally more secure than using public Wi-Fi: CISA guidance on wireless networks. It may help when you cannot find a suitable public connection, but it requires compatible mobile service and may involve device and data costs. It is not a way to get free Wi-Fi.
